These videos about how Macs work have been sooooo helpful. Thank you. I'm a veteran user of Macs and I've learned at least four things each video. I appreciate this information.

After 30 years of being a PC user, I finally bought myself a Mac Pro this year. However I missed knowing all the PC keyboard shortcuts and processes off by heart.... and Finder, well it was a real headache for me. So happy I am slowly getting to know Mac shortcuts and can’t wait to try out your awesome Finder tips. Thanks so much Gary, I’m learning so much from you ! 💃😁

I 100% agree. I've been trying to convert from PC for years and honestly never sat down to try to learn more about the Finder. I absolutely can't stand the finder every time I use it, which his literally all day long when I am on a Mac. These shortcuts help me out tremendously.

I came to say the same thing. The Finder vs Explorer is by far the most challenging to learn. As someone how has 3 external drives of media and uses PLEX I was getting so frustrated navigating and organizing (after moving folders/files from one external to another to format drives).

Hello Gary, so glad I found your ‘little’ channel..
Little by numbers but highly valuable by its content!
You deserve 100 x the numbers of viewers. When others only spend their energy on producing 3 videos a week on the never ending rumours or same subjects as Final Cut Pro, Geeks Speed Tests, your channel is giving us training and valuable info.
Keep up the good work Gary!
Thanks from a Frenchman (trying his 1st ever Mac when everybody seems to switch away from Mac)

Hi Gary. I'm long overdue thanking you for this and your other videos. I moved from PC to a 2021 27" iMac earlier this year after decades as a Windows user. I'm a file folder kid of guy and couldn't figure out how to move a file without creating a copy of it, until I watched this. One would think that there would be better mention of the option key to move files in the Apple user guide. Now I can work with documents and files and make them do what I want. This is a real game changer for me and has really made my Mac experience enjoyable. Thank you again for all of your tutorials. This is an old video but remains relevant and valuable today.

WOW! I've watched so many videos being a Windows>Mac convert. Your video was by far the most helpful in learning how to navigate Finder and tweak. Subscribing to your channel for more useful Mac tut's. Finder is by far the most challenging difference. Learning about the Option key was by far the most useful tip for me, especially the "move" command. Thanks so much.

Thanks for the great video. My last Mac gave up the ghost approx. 3 yea5s ago. Instead of getting a new one, I got a 3rd Gen iPad Pro 12.9 1Tb on release. A way to move files/folders from one folder to another:
Create Finder Folder Tabs for the “from folder” and the “to folder”
Click on the file/folder you want to move in the “from folder” tab
Drag it up to the “to folder” finder tab.
The “to folder” tab window will open up (come into focus)
Drop the file/folder into the “to folder” tab window area.

This is a wonderful channel! I recently found it and have been watching back to back. I do have a question though, perhaps you could provide the answer? When one is using an application and do "Save As", the system takes you to the last location where files were saved, but for me, this is mostly incorrect. I would like for it to take me to where the file I am editing was opened. Can that be configured somewhere? Many thanks!

Thanks for the good info! Question: I have a late 2015 IMac, with El Capitan. I'm finding some things won't work with such an old system. I never upgraded to Catalina, High Sierra, etc..........so, on Apple Store, there are no upgrades to be seen, and when I search for them, it says they aren't found. Please advise how I can update from El Capitan to which newer one you think best............I have plenty of RAM, have checked the Apple Icon, About, and I'm compatible, but just can't find where I can switch over/update on Apple Store. I don't trust some outside Mac site to download a whole operating system. Please Help. Thank you.

I'm on OS Catalina ✏️ I see you can grab the Finder Column ANYWHERE along it from top to bottom. I can only grab the tiny little 'Divide' marks at the very bottom of the Columns. Between my columns there is a width for the slider when needed… perhaps this is the issue❓ For one, they should be at the top as this is where the user is 99% working with their mouse. The amount of distance you need to travel EVERY SINGLE TIME to adjust the columns using this is infuriating. NOW that I have your awesome tips the world is a better place 😃 Why though can I not grab the edge of any Column and drag/adjust❓
ALSO, it would be good to comment on COMMENTS 😉 What are they for❓ Can you Search in Comments❓ Could they be used also as Tagging❓ Love your work 😬 🎉💥 🚀

Thank you for this video, I learnt a few tips that will be useful. However, one thing that continues to annoy/irritate me in OS X is that the search/spotlight (magnifying glass) window cannot be expanded horizontally. Sometime when you search for a file or document somewhere on your computer and then when you find it, sometimes the full path (when you select option key) is truncated because the window is too narrow. This has been like this in OSX for ages and with each new upgrade i.e Catalina, I hope this has been fixed, but alas no, it is still limited to expanding the window size only vertically, but not horizontally. If you know a way of fixing this, please post a video on this trick. For the life of me, I do not understand why Apple continue to limit the resizing of this window, every other window seems to be able to be resized in both directions, except this spotlight window.

Great video as always..thanks! One thing I'm challenged by: In the folder Show View Options menu, there's a button to use my settings as Default. I'm assuming (maybe wrongly) that means ALL folders will use my chosen settings (icon, font sizes, etc.) but that doesn't happen. What am I missing? Thanks again...

    • @macmost
      @macmost  4 ปีที่แล้ว

It changes the defaults, but if you have set some property of a folder previously, then it will remember it. So if you have folders A, B, C, D and you set A to something and B to something, and then C to something and click the Use as Defaults button on C, then you'll see the same when you go to D. But A and B will remember how you set them up.

Photos as files in the Finder? Or do you mean Photos in the Photos app? And if they are files in the Finder, what type of photos? If they are your family or vacation photos (etc) then maybe consider bringing them into the Photos app so you can organize them there. That's what the app does.

I know this is an older video but do you know how to get a folder view like the windows list view, where you have hundreds of files on one screen (depending on the length of the file names), can sort them by name/type and scroll from left to right, like a book. I have many folders with mp3 files or pictures that have hundreds or even thousands of files in them. So it looks like this inside a folder:
    01 06 11 16
    02 07 12 17
    03 08 13 18
    04 09 14 19

If you have to restart your Mac for some reason, make sure you choose the option to NOT close all windows. If you do, then you are not reopening old Finder windows, but opening new ones. New windows won't be in the same place as old ones, naturally. See th-cam.com/video/nKXCjD4HdpY/w-d-xo.html

I don't know what "audio box" means. But maybe you just have the sound for the video turned off or all the way down. Adjust it at the bottom of the video.
