However, what stands out is that (a) marine A lost his hat, while marine B did not; so there was something up with marine A's hat, and (b) Trump picked up the hat, and put it back unchanged, on the head of marine A... and the hat promptly blew off again, which was no surprise. Not the best analyst of a situation, is Donald.

As a Marine I still admire our customs and traditions. To those that don't know. The Marine was trained to not retrieve his cover(hat) in the event it flies off, and additionally he doesn't render a salute to any of the high ranking military members including the president ofcourse because Marines do not salute when they are uncovered(not wearing a hat). His standing at attention was the most respectful without saluting was the most respectful posture he could take while the higher ranking members boarded the helicopter. The army is slightly different I believe with saluting uncovered. Edit: comment section taught me that it is still required to salute but yes you shouldn't retrieve the cover.
Yes it's a bit touchy, we don't normally salute without a cover on but if your in pt uniform and you pass an officer you still salute them also if the officer is in pt uniform then there is no rank on it, it's possible to pass an officer and not know they're an officer, in which case as long as the officer isn't a dickhead they will understand that your situation and no one salutes. But obviously if you recognize them and know they're an officer you must salute.

As a Marine I still admire our customs and traditions. To those that don't know. The Marine was trained to not retrieve his cover(hat) in the event it flies off, and additionally he doesn't render a salute to any of the high ranking military members including the president ofcourse because Marines do not salute when they are uncovered(not wearing a hat). His standing at attention was the most respectful without saluting was the most respectful posture he could take while the higher ranking members boarded the helicopter. The army is slightly different I believe with saluting uncovered.
Edit: comment section taught me that it is still required to salute but yes you shouldn't retrieve the cover.
It kinda of depends. Most of the time no, we don't salute without headgear. However if we are given the command present arms, we salute anyway.

Yes it's a bit touchy, we don't normally salute without a cover on but if your in pt uniform and you pass an officer you still salute them also if the officer is in pt uniform then there is no rank on it, it's possible to pass an officer and not know they're an officer, in which case as long as the officer isn't a dickhead they will understand that your situation and no one salutes. But obviously if you recognize them and know they're an officer you must salute.
