It's nice to see a sensible, hardworking, intelligent young man. The Southern charm is a bonus. I like the care you take to fix the houses so your tenants have decent safe affordable housing. Hope all your dreams come true.

@valleywoodworker I was commenting about his financial advice. I'm no expert in roofing, I have never done it myself and don't know anyone in the trade. If he's not taking safety precautions that he should you're correct that's not sensible and I certainly hope for his sake and that of his wife and child, that he will take the time to do what he needs to do to make sure that he won't become a DIY casualty.

@valleywoodworker Why don't you make some videos showing us the right way to tear off and dry in a roof by yourself since you seem like an expert at that task. Only thing safer he could've done is tie off which in reality is comparable to riding a bike without a helmet or driving a car without a seatbelt. He's not a roofer (as stated in the video) so he's not going to be doing things the way a roofing contractor should (safety-wise) nor is he required to. If you think that was crazy you should see the guys that do this with 12' pieces of propanel or better yet just watch an arborist's TH-cam channel. A sensible person can successfully execute calculated risk (which he definitely did), not to mention he can simply drop/toss the board if he feels he's gonna lose footing.

Safety tips. Secure ladders, especially one on a roof to another roof with straps using Hitch Clips. Buy a proper harness. You'll never miss the $100. Your safety is worth it.

As Im not a roofer and not too fond of heights, watching up there initially made me fearful for him, but even if he seems as sure footed as a mountain goat, its good to know fear is a factor, because thats reassuring, hes not going to take risks...although I like the suggestion of a harness, especially if working alone because IF the worst happened, no one could come to his aid if he didn't fall in a visible spot, and it looks a tad remote overall so, very impressive I think everything he does is impressive, I love the chat of the end, I love the way his mindset thinks, very sensible. . It's good to watch him at work even though the houses in England are built differently it's still very interesting and I love the Can-Do attitude the way the rooves are done in America are way that we do sheds over here in UK... whatever he said was roofing paper we don't put anything more on top although we do have flat roofs and I believe then they use some sort of bitumen to stick it down. I don't think we have anything like roofing tin... I could be wrong, I've never seen it... but like I said I am not a roofer.
Sometimes I just listen to his voice, I find the accent very relaxing. Well done... 👏👏👏

@@YewandeRae You guys tend to use tiles rather than asphalt shingles. That makes a big difference. With tiles or slate, you need airflow behind the material. Of course, thatch is a whole different ballgame. Asphalt Composit shingles are easy to work with, but most have a life of 10-15 years, then you have to strip them off. Slate is outrageously Exp here. A slate roof would cost about 10 times what was paid for the house.

My father chased the almighty dollar and didn't realize until he was dying that my mom and me didn't want things we wanted his time and attention. You never met us, but we are proud of you. We enjoy listening to you and learning some new things. I will admit, seeing you taking the decking up the ladder did make me hold my breath. Another great video.

for us it part financial motivation and part love for something. After 20 years in my chosen career I am not only bored but don't want to get out of bed and do the rat race any more. we don't have an investment portfolio and our pension plan will be pretty low even if I do last the next 20 years in order to receive it.
I am at the point where I would rather get up at 7am and nail down subfloors in our current investment property than have the hour in bed and go to the office for a 9-5 job. You look at any successfully or motivated individual and they "love" what they do. They have a passion, it drives them. I have this with property, be it framing, drywall or tiling bathrooms. I used to have that passion in my career and took advantage of it, but not any more. Our long term goal is to be able to live from this house process. We only have one mortgaged property and that is a big rental outfit that pays for itself and is our main residence. As much as I would love to do the HGTV show where we make 100K per flip, that is not an option where we live. There is an option to "make" and by that I mean enough to live on at our current lifestyle by property investments. You don't realise how expensive it is to "go to work", gas, food, clothing, driving time, lack of ability to run errands, and we don't have even have children! factor in child care and everything else you end up working for nothing. Least we are working for ourselves and our future.

Doubt is normal for humans but it's your character and how you treat others that is what is important. Regarding the naysayers, they will always have comments about what you do. You are most familiar with your abilities and potential as well as your flaws. You are doing well for yourself because you aren't dependent on anyone else or any boss telling you what to do. Not to sound redundant, you are an inspiration to many so many of us, so concentrate on those you are helping not the ones who are criticizing what you do and how you do it. "Do not let another; spend in your pockets". God bless and thanks or sharing.

The way you work gives you one thing that has no price . You have full control at all times and are not dependent on someone else keeping to your schedule. The section where the rafter ends, soffit and facia had to be replaced would of led to delays with most contractors as they would need to get agreement then materials before proceeding. I did have visions of that second ladder coming down when the osb was being taken up and you standing on the roof looking down thinking `Whoops'. Your roof is now dried in and if your shingles man is a bit approximate as to when he will turn up it wont matter as you can proceed with other tasks. I do enjoy watching your work and seeing the differences in the methods and materials you use compared to standard practise in England where i am.

And you're right, you do typically get those kinds of people to do your roof; ran into that myself last year. Can't wait to see more videos!

everyone is different, some people get stressed at low level risk others can be at the precipice of losing it all and still feel no stress. And that goes for money, or regular work. Thanks for the videos and the good discussion. Cheers from PEI Canada, Bryan

3rd watching. Your editing is first class storytelling. Wondering, - some film schooling in the past, or strictly self taught? Your videos quietly put the backbone back in America. Actually your world class.

Wow, rent an entire house for under $1,000 monthly. I'm on west coast in the PNW, a small 1 or 2 bd apt is well over that amount. Cost of living here is so crazy!! Nice work. Love seeing each home come to life. Be safe and blessings to you.

The advice about doing what's right in your own situation is great. My wife and I work thousands of km from where we bought a house, so we bought a newer duplex in nice condition for a lot more money than the fixer-upper we'd buy if we lived in town. When we're paying someone else's labour, it's better for us to have bought something that doesn't need much and just spend the time at work. Where you live, whether you have a decent paying job, how far away the hardware store is all make the calculation different for each of us.

I like your go-slow approach. You are entirely right to keep your debt and expenses low, especially in a state like Wisconsin. If the economy falls out, (think 2008-2010) and real estate falls into the crapper, a real estate market like Wisconsin will take the brunt of it, and then only slowly recover. Being over-extended could spell disaster.

This is why I only put steel back up, never have to touch it again! I have done many roofs over the yrs, and you did it just fine! People that have not don't see the "watch every step" too many today don't have the heart too put themselves out there! IMO a harness gets in the way too much, and won't help when your up and down a ladder anyway!

Normally how you handle a valley is you start your first course and run it long onto the next roof. Then you start your first course on the other roof and run it long and you continue that pattern, it's referred too as "weaving" the valley. I am sure what you did will be fine but in the event you ever do another roof, now you know. Glad to see you decided to put new decking on, that's the right way to do it so good on you.

I watch "The Handyman" channel. He has a maintenance-remodel business. He stated that he worked in larger metropolitan city with a population of 1.5 million people. When he does projects outside and does the speedup on videos the audio sounds like he is nearby a speedway track because he works in high traffic neighborhoods. The low hum of sped up voices from your radio reminded me of this.
i commend you for working smart on the roof. I have had balance issues my whole life (left ear deafness). It has gotten worse now that I am older. You are in great shape and appear to me to be in good health. Though the roof's unevenness does look like a challenge you have negotiated it well.

I did worry about you up there even though I knew you were fine in that I am watching a video you had to have edited. I think it is apparent you have learned a lot from your experience. The majority of people "out there" & those I know would not have the patience or the fortitude to do what you are doing. It is evident by your actions and results that you are doing the right things!! Take care and God Bless.

tip from a roofer. dry in down in the valley first and dry into the valley. from across. if code allows, synthetic dry in is cheaper, lighter and does more per roll.

So very informative. My grandmother taught me how to shingle a roof. It is actually quite rewarding. It is best if you have at least one person to help, though, both for dealing with weight but also to have help on hand in case of trouble. The prep on that roof looks really well done except for not having valley flashing. The valleys are shallow, but still, better safe than sorry. I would have considered using the self-adhesive ice dam shield in the valleys just because the are so shallow. Knowing the damage water does, I always figure better safe than sorry when doing a roof. I would also consider ridge vents for allowing air movement in the attic. They work well.

Man, so much to say after this vid! First off and foremost. Keep doing you man! Anyone with a strong work ethic should understand why you are doing the work you can by yourself. There is nothing like the sense of a job well done! Second; it's really hard to believe you have haters trying to tell you what to do with your homes and your investments. You are clearly doing a very good job. Just keep doing what you do and ignore the negativity. There are a lot people admiring what you're doing here.
