I've been trying to watch so many videos on granny squares and this is the one that finally helped me understand that I was doing too many double crochets.

I'm in the UK and I don't know where you live but is it the same, because I did the 'double crochet' you did? PS this is so much clearer than other turorials ive seen, thank you xx PPS what yarn do you use? And what size hook?
The chain ring is standard, but you can use whatever method you prefer. There's lots of modifications that use the magic ring. The only downside to the magic ring is that when you add too many stitches (in this case 12) the hole won't close completely and you risk your granny square unraveling if the center hole gets too big.
Please, what kind of yarn n what size hook are you using??? You leave so many first steps n cut off before finishing the row!!! Please, if you’re going to instruct do it so we can follow you!!! Thank you

Is it the chain itself or the slip stitch to form a ring that was confusing?

To get started? Where did the first loop/knot come from?
You make a slip knot which makes the first loop for you and then you can start chaining hope this helped!!

This was way too fast. By the time your done explaining one stitch you've already started the next step. This is not a good slow beginner tutorial.
