There are certain types of food that would easily cause a war of words among Chinese netizens about whether they are salty or sweet, such as Tangyuan, soy milk and Chinese pancakes. Zongzi is actually also one of them. But today we are going to introduce you a “weird” type of Zongzi, which is both salty and sweet. It is the bi-flavor Zongzi balls from the Chaoshan district in Canton. It’s stuffed with various ingredients, including salted eggs yolk, dried shrimps, prawns, lotus seeds without germs, shiitakes and green bean paste. The glutinous rice has been fried with Satay sauce. The marbled pork has been cured with fermented bean curd. And the quail eggs have been soaked in sugar water. The combination of the salty and sweet tastes makes the Zongzi unexpectedly delicious!

I gave one of these to my childhood Hispanic friends as a kid. He said it was the tastiest Asian tamale he'd ever had. Just thinking about Zongzi brings back so many memories.
