- Chicago Cubs rookie Shōta Imanaga has been brilliant in his first MLB season. Craig Counsell called him the teams best player. The only Cubs All-Star was the biggest bright spot for a franchise that will miss the playoffs again in 2024. How important was he to the 2024 Cubs??

Great podcast! Talk about the coaching staff... Is it gonna be the same for 2025?
If you fans and Mick and crew don't want Nico let him go to a playoff team and give him a chance to shine on the national level.
It's not a question of not wanting him. He had his time as part of the core and it just didn't work out for whatever reason. Now they have someone else in the minors ready to graduate (Matt Shaw) who they invested a lot of time and trouble in developing. So it's time to move on. That's baseball.
talk about the kids coming up.
With the Iowa season being over now, is there any reason why somebody these guys are not brought up to replace people like Mastro and wisdom who will not be here next year? Why is Smyly still here?
Why would you not want the supposedly future stars to get at least a taste of what it’s like to be in the major leagues?
I read something about them not wanting to start their service time clock when there's just a handful of meaningless games left.
Mick, you should address how the Cubs improve in the clutch. Can they make the guys they have better or do they need to move on from some guys that only get it done when it doesn’t really matter?
My question as well. Thank you for asking!
Cubs are one of the worst fundamentally sound teams on offense I have ever seen. And not just this year. It’s like as an organization they do not view clutch hitting as a real thing . Yet teams like the Brewers do and continue to beat on the Cubs that way.
@@timad11 Don't forget the terrible base running. I have been thinking the same. Don't they teach this stuff.
With the comments from CC and the players, I think we’re starting to see where that reported friction is coming from. They are obviously trying to get Jed to do his job.
Talk about the possible guys who will be moved off the 40 man. I also would like to know
if they remove them what their status would be. I know it depends on options etc. That all confuses me
Talk about 2nd base and catcher positions and of course the middle relief pitching
and Tauchman in which I hope he stays.
Trades will have to be made to improve.
Great comments Mick but it's hard to trust Hoyer to do what needs to be done to fix this Roster. The off-season should be interesting to say the least
I don’t think if Belly ops in that it’s bad thing for the Cubs. I think it’s bad for Mike Tauchman who I really like. Is Owen Cassie ready?
The battle for second base next year will be a great topic cause I don’t see Shaw at third. The emergence of PCA this year, even though you’ve talked about him a lot is always a great topic. Kyle Hendricks, will he pitch for the Cubs next year? I think the Cubs need another top of the rotation pitcher.
Can you talk about why The Cubs can have one game where they score 10 runs and then the next game gets shut out, Is it poor scouting or ineffective planning on the part of Cubs management, or Is it something else.
I like the comments Counsell and Taillon both made. Sounds like they're really displeased with where the team is at. Sure some of that lands on the players and Counsell but I'd argue the majority of problem lands on Hoyer. He constructed this mediocre roster thinking they'd be good enough to make the playoffs.
As far as trading Happ I don't agree with that. Happ is one of the only solid pieces of this offense as well as one of the most consistent + actually has good numbers with risp. The only way you try to move Happ or Suzuki is if they're going to bring in Soto to replace one of them which isn't going to happen. I think the solution to improving the offense lies in the infield somehow.
Regardless of how they do it they need to shake up the offense for 2025. They also are going to need to add a mid-top rotation starter and actually get some reliable back end relievers. Don't want to have another season of waiting until June 30th to figure out the bullpen.
Now get Bauer! 😊
I wish there were a more accurate term than " meaningless" games.
Paul Skenes does not even qualify for ERA title.. I'm not sure why he would get a ROY over Shota who does qualify for ERA title and among Rookies that qualify, he has the best ERA and best Win/loss record. He's also currently the 3rd best starter(ERA) in all the NL and 4th best in all MLB.
Also, Skenes, with his record and pitching, couldn't even help the Pirates finish the season out of last place ...
Historically, voters for postseason awards don't punish players for being on bad teams. And I agree with that.
Last year, they came close to the playoffs. This year, we couldn't even smell the playoffs. Next year, same players, same results because they can't spend more money.
Now sweep the Phillie!
None of what u said about steele mattered. 25 blown saves 1st half. We win half and we're central champs and best in baseball almost.
How many games were Cubs predicted to win this year? 85? That’s about where they’re going to end up. Why the disappointment then?
The biggest problem was Counsell apathy for most of the season.
You always want to bring up unproven talent. You have to prove yourself to get to the bigs.
"Counsell's apathy" is a misread of his character. It has nothing to do with the 26 blown saves out of 61 chances, nor Bellinger's injuries, nor Alzolay, Merryweather, Steele, Wicks, Thomson, Brown and Little's injuries, nor Gomes' offense falling off a cliff, nor Swanson's interminable slump, nor a weak bench including Madrigal and Mastrobuoni.
If Bellinger sticks around, maybe Happ would capitulate and consider a deal; say a move back to his hometown Pittsburgh, PA. Heh, I dunno. Just a thought.
Are we going to be building forever? I’m getting to hate this new baseball. We don’t get to enjoy players. Now you see them now you don’t. No humanity. Sick and tired.
Mismanagement on multiple levels
Shota the best hitter, not player.
