SG551 vs SIG551-A1 Carbines: Fox's 1st Impressions & Is Swiss Quality Worth It Over American?

  • A new twist on a classic subject matter around here. Fox has never once handled or fired an American built SIG556 or SIG551-A1. Plus the only Swiss SIG he has fired was a SG553 in braced pistol form. So this weekend, he will see and operate for the very first time both an imported SG551 carbine and domestic SIG551-A1. He tries out both back-to-back, and then has a sit down discussion with Misha afterwards. Which did he prefer? and does he think the gun from Switzerland is worth the coin?

    The real Swiss Stocks might be different/better. (Can't comment on the US made ones.) However, the real Swiss ones have an aluminum skeleton underneath the polymer. Theres a schematic nomenclature sheet that shows the aluminum skeleton underneath. Made to withstand the grenade launcher.

    • @misha5670
      @misha5670 ปีที่แล้ว

      Both have original Swiss stocks on them. It was only later on in the SIG551-A1's production life that SIG-Sauer Inc. switched to a cheaper stock that only looked original.

    Next time you should not tell him which is the more expensive gun. I think its a subconsciously thing we do, a lot of the times knowing the price tag influences our feelings about a particular product. Not saying he wouldn't be able to tell the difference in quality because I'm sure there is some but it would be a nice experiment to see if he could tell just by handling them.

    • @misha5670
      @misha5670 ปีที่แล้ว

      He did not know the price today of the USA made 551-A1. Of course he is aware of what Swiss imports cost. Kind of impossible for anyone around me not to pickup on that unfortunately.

    • @Ret2Play
      @Ret2Play ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Honestly, before Fox gave his impressions, I saw the difference in recoil and heard the rattle of the handguard on the US version. Those things matter to me. I would prefer the Swiss made…not looking to suppress it and claw mount is ok for optics for me. Just my humble opinion. Mishra, are the Swiss made versions still being imported?

    • @markp4401
      @markp4401 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Ret2Play I’m with you man. Hand guard rattle sucks. I don’t use suppressors. The Swiss gun is nicer and I bet it’ll hold it’s value better.

    • @timewave02012
      @timewave02012 ปีที่แล้ว

      Misha shouldn't have told Fox which gun was Swiss and which was American. Tape over the markings. It's well known for side-by-side comparisons that evaluators are biased even if they think they're not. Ideally, they'd have done the test so no one one present knew the difference. I still appreciate the results, and I believed Fox by the end, but in the beginning he sounded like he was just making up reasons to favor the Swiss rifle.

    Hey Misha. Will a 551 gas valve work in a PE90?
    Also, there is a company called ess bros who makes an adapter for the 55X which slips over the flash hider. You can find them on gunbroker if you look up "Sig 550 suppressor" in the search box where they have the adapter for all the non threaded 55X series guns. Its not the ideal way to mount a suppressor, but it works. It will be pretty loud since its overgassed, but if you have or know someone with good machining skills, you could probably add some extra settings on the other side and make your own custom 4 position gas valve like on the 553SB to make it quieter and not make the action so violent.

    • @misha5670
      @misha5670 ปีที่แล้ว

      Here's the problem, some FHs are 22mm to work with NATO spec grenades, but guns imported back in the '80s (and those built with those old barrels too) have their flash hiders shaved down to about 19-20mm. Thus any adaptor fits very loose.

    • @Gun_Dae
      @Gun_Dae ปีที่แล้ว

      @@misha5670 that's why they have different versions for the 551 according to barrel length/flash hider types. Plus the way it's designed pushes up against the taper of the flash hider so it stays tight.

    • @misha5670
      @misha5670 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Gun_Dae Really want to bandaid a suppressor onto a $4k+ gun? I am just not willing to risk that and honestly, i don't really find shooting suppressed in 5.56x45 all that much fun. Want to do that? Get one of those .300 Blackout SG553s. Those things suppress beautifully right out of the box. The SG553SB is also designed to run a can from the factory. The 16" SG551P is simply a bad choice to try and make into a suppressor hoste.

    • @Gun_Dae
      @Gun_Dae ปีที่แล้ว

      @@misha5670 if it works why not? I've had good luck with my adapter but I'll acknowledge my anecdotal experience is a sample size of 1 so if you dont want to risk it, that's understandable. I just wanted to let the info out there so anyone who is dead set on suppressing it (no matter how impractical it might seem) know that the option is there and they arent completely SOL short of SBRing their rifle and sending it to a gunsmith to remove chop the flash hider and thread the barrel and reinstall it back into the receiver.
