I went to High School with Christian. He was weird but I am too, and most teenagers were as well. His dad was my English teacher for a year, and his dad was always really nice. Goes to show you that you never really know who is capable of this sort of thing.

His parents' seemingly unsurprised response to discovering that he had murdered several people, cut them up, and covered them with a tarp speaks volumes about his psych history. His parents didn't seem at all shocked by the killings.
I'm curious if he was found killing animals growing up. I could give the parents the benefit of the doubt for still being in shock, but it does make me wonder
When his dad apologized for his sons actions, but then made sure to turn to his son and tell him how much he loves him. I can’t imagine how angry and disappointed I would be in my child for committing these disgusting and senseless murders. You’re right, his dad doesn’t seem at all surprised by his sons actions.
@@chronic_payne5669 I think it came from a place of caring for his kid unconditionally, but also feeling shame and the need to take responsibility for his actions. One of our Patrons knows his dad personally. He was a teacher for years over at Dirigo High School - same with his stepmother. He's apparently a really good guy. ♡ Yergy
@@TheMiseryMachine he was my teacher for three years. One of the nicest people ive ever met. Easily my favorite English teacher. He would snort every time he laughed. I felt so bad for him. I still remember the assembly in the gym when they said he wouldn’t be back. Broke my heart.
@@TheMiseryMachine I know I'm late to this party but I think parents who are also teachers have this other way of looking at things when it comes to children. My mom was a teacher and every year she had at least two children in her class that were uncared for in some way and she was super hurt by it and she would be a little more empathetic and compassionate when they acted out, compared to other teachers who acted mostly annoyed. When my siblings and I acted up she was super mild in her approach with discipline, but she would beat herself up because she felt like she missed a step somewhere in parenting. I think the father might feel some of that. He has seen children come and go and I bet some that were mentally/physically/ s*xually and spiritually abused. At his very core as much as unconditional his love for his son is he can't bring himself to disown or stop loving him because he is feeling like it's his bad parenting. Showing that same empathy and patience for the disruptive kids in his classroom. I have to hand it to him though being able to be at the crime scene and remain calm, level headed and non judgmental. I'm sure what he saw will never leave him. I'm a new sub BTW and I am hooked! Keep up the great content!

I agree with you, but it's worse when they say someone "passed" when they were murdered. It's like nails on a chalkboard.
My dad was the cop on the left escorting him out of the building and transported him, he said that he was silent the whole ride besides saying “a grilled ham a cheese would be nice”. We used to drive past the bed and breakfast all the time and he told me the story.

Christian was a student or apprentice to my culinary teacher . When Christian was arrested , he told us all about him and how off her was . My teacher would say Christian would purposely mix bleach and ammonia together in the kitchen. My teacher was real close with him and he told me he was a good guy , but he always said something just wasn't right with him and he felt like he had to keep his guard up in around him with out people in the room and by himself. I've stumbled upon this podcast and when I heard the name Christian my eyes got wide and I was sent back to that very day my teacher was telling me about Christian. I lived in Maine for 10 years and I've had some crazy run in with people there . One guy chased me in his car when I was walking home from work at night. He offers me a ride and I didn't want the ride and as I walked away he chased me in his car. I hid in a gully of muddy water watching him go back n fourth in his car , yelling out to me to come out .....and saying I can smell you. I'll never forget those big hands of that person. That was the only thing I saw. Years later after I moved away out of state , boys around late teens to early 20's were going missing in that area I lived in and sruuoinding areas.
I’ve heard that Maine is a hotspot for sex trafficking and child abduction.

I went through the same experience with my friend. Managed to get out of the car with a kids knife at the back of his neck to let us out. He stopped to let us out. We ran to the woods
He drove back and forth looking for us while we hid in a ditch with freezing water.

I met Julie a week before she was killed. I was a pest control man at the time and was doing a routine service for the Black Bear Inn. She was a really nice lady and we both grew up in the same area in California, her in San Francisco and me Mill Valley. We must have talked for nearly an hour. She said she was moving to New York with her daughter soon and was really excited about it. She mentioned to me that there was a man staying there that would smack her on the ass while she was cooking and grew very uncomfortable about it. She asked him to leave after he had done this several times but refused. Julie also told me she was going to report him to the police and perhaps she told him this and that was possibly the motive for him killing her and others. I'm assuming Julie told James and Selby what was going on so they all had information to share with authorities. Perhaps I'm the only one alive that knows that detail about him being sexually harassing besides Christian...until now. What happened still haunts me to this day.
I hope you have told the authorities about this information. It might not seem like much but it could help the investigators immensely.

I appreciate the dude knew him from prison but "they looked down their noses at him" or "treated him badly" or "not having the best childhood" is no justification for anything close to this. He's had years to tell people why. I'm sure he can be a normal dude, but it's safe to say you haven't seen his dark side. And his dark side is WAY DARK. And him being normal during a cribbage game doesn't mean he isn't psychotic or have psychotic tendencies at the least. Most people don't "snap" and kill multiple people and their dogs.....
There is no excuse for murder - let alone this demonic act - NOTHING from the past can excuse taking another human life

What was tying him to living with them if they treated him to so poorly to? He could have left at any time, instead of murdering people. Some people come up with any reason to justify this shit and it's horrific
I was serving a 6 months jail sentence in Oxford County Jail when Neilson came through. It was crazy he was given his own block, while other inmates slept on the floor of the other overcrowded blocks. I saw Neilson everyday as I worked kitchen and delivered his meals, he was entirely insane. He didn't speak for the first few months he was in custody, not a single word to anyone not even his lawyer. I grew up in Bethel about five miles from the Black Bear Inn. This was the biggest news story Bethel had ever seen I think. It was nuts.
Oh and I worked at the Suds Pub last summer. Alot of people say that Jimmy's spirit haunts the trails in Upton. Reported sightings of his ghost and all. Creepy stuff.
If you all just made good decisions you wouldn't have to get punishment 😉

Great episode. I find the end really interesting. I don't understand why the person who said they did time with him was so determined to downplay the horrific things done and only wanted to focus on what he thought of the murderers character. I'm sorry you don't get to use "someone was mean to me or didn't treat me well" as an excuse for killing another person.
I bet he had his cell mate fooled. Physchopaths can be very charming. Based on the different stories he had already told, I doubt that he was honest about why/what he did.

He didn't downplay what he did. All he did was talk about how he felt about Christian's personality when he knew him. And what he was told by Christian about why Christian did what he did. That's all he said. He repeated what Christian told him. And he said that Christian was nice to HIM. That's it.

The person that allegedly served time with Nielsen sounds as though he may be describing his own feelings of being either mistreated or how he thought he was mistreated. 🤨
My boyfriend of 27 years was in Oxford County jail on driving charges and while he was there Christian was also there. My boyfriend went to school with him at Telstar High School so he knew him, and had mentioned while in high school he was a quiet boy pretty and pretty much kept to himself.While in Oxford County my boyfriend had heard about the horrendous murders and decided to sit down with Christian while eating lunch ( This was when he first got there so he was eating at this point) and asked him all kind of questions which Christian answered alot of them by saying " I don't know why",But one of the questions that he did answer will haunt me forever when asked "what did you do to Jimmy"? While giving a side grin he replied " Jimmy, well there's nothing left of jimmy".Another question that was asked and sticks in my mind is when asked why did you kill the dogs? His reply was " But I had to kill the dogs because of their barking, and I didn't want them running out by the road with fingers in their mouths.Theres questions that my boyfriend shared his responses with me but I won't share due to respect for the family members of the deceased!! This man is very sick and twisted and I have absolutely no doubt that there's a spot in helll with his name written all over it!!

this is going to sound really weird but im glad you told us, because to me its gives a whole different side to him. it humanizes him. because at the end of the day he was a child, some ones son, uncle, nephew, brother etc. and so what happened? not just him, but all those who do horrendous things. i think that could of been any of our relations. some are born wired wrong, but some come into contact with adults who do horrendous things to them.
It’s almost amusing that an x-con doesn’t even entertain the idea that Christian would have lied to him. People seen what he wanted them to see. If they began to see thru that & let’s say...either pay rent or be evicted...he didn’t have to pretend anymore, he’d just carry out his dreams/fantasies. He probably seen the B&B as his modern day

You guys are soo captivating in delivery of these cases. You're really enjoyable and I am never bored with the cases you study and present. I don't ever really comment on the podcasts of other true crime channels, but I felt compelled to express how much others and myself find you to be addictive. I'm hooked
A common trait of people who commit heinous acts like this, is to compulsively or chronically lie and decieve. Usually, it's about control and upholding a facade to validate their inflated egos and protect the broken person inside of them from feeling shame.
He went on a hunger strike huh??? Oh how smart of him...
They should have let him continue with that hunger strike right up to him "winning." It would have saved a lot of tax payer dollars just buying a pine box vs. a lifetime of care, food & housing.

as someone with asbergers syndrome and ASPD, I know that its like to try and communicate anything and it’s very very hard. I tend to smile laugh or smirk at inappropriate times unintentionally, my face just sort of does it. Anyway, what he did and the sentences he got is all logical, I think he had the urge to kill, something regarding his perception of how he was being treated triggered him and after he satisfied that urge and “came to” in a sense, he called his dad and cooperated as best he could with a mental disorder that severely inhibits one’s ability to communicate emotions, and reasoning behind emotional events. I hope this sheds some potential insight

Mainer here, I had never heard of this. I'm from Aroostock County, I remember hearing over 15 years ago that multiple buckets filled with cement and remains were found in the woods but never heard anything more about it. Also, I remember there was a decapitation at a dodgy Scottish Inn in Houlton. Maine has some pretty disturbing crime though rare.
I'll have to look into that. The multiple buckets incident, was that in Aroostock County too? It's crazy the amount of things that happen out there which have no record when you try to google them. I think that's what shocks me the most, just how much the media pretends like it doesn't happen here at all.

Just wanted to leave a comment after watching so many of your videos and subscribing. There's just something about your episodes that are so riveting. Almost feels like I'm hearing someone discuss a casefile with how detailed it is but said in a manner that respects the story. I've come across channels that tend to embellish certain aspects and I've grown so tired of that. I just want to hear a story of actual facts and not dolled up ones for views. Good thing is, recent and new crime channels are popping up that have taken more care about that.
Thanks for sharing this story. It's just harrowing how much life changes for so many people just because of someone's act of violence. It's frightening.
Thank you for the kind words Dee! I agree, True Crime felt very exploitative to me for a long time, and even before the popularity of podcasts, channels like Investigation Discovery would embellish parts of the case and try to make things more interesting for TV. I'd like to believe that this new generation of True Crime creators are really starting to understand the responsibility they have in running their platform and making up for the mistakes of shows in the past.

Heard of this case a few times before, but liked all the detail that you included in your telling of these senseless murders. He seems to just “ want to” see what killing people would be like, to be known for something other than a basic nobody! They were just there, I don’t think he particularly hated these people, it was just easy. He is so cold, such an empty waste of a human shell.

I'm Selby's daughter and I wish they would take this video down. They're monetizing off of something I love with and breaks my heart daily. We were extremely worried when she didn't come home, but she was with Cindy. We thought maybe everything was okay and they went to the country club but when her phone turned off like my grandmother Julie's right after she arrived at the house I just knew they were all dead. I was 11, of course no one took my worries super seriously

And the fact of the people arguing over him and his behavior in the comments made them sound like children. Infact they sounded almost as insane as him. Crazy. Love you guys. Keep up the great work. I absolutely appreciate this channel and the two of you committing to telling the story from an official report perspective.
It seems that Christian’s “Signature” was dismemberment. Dismemberment seemed to be the motive. At least from what I can tell from the details told… He quickly and without prejudice, killed his victims. He wasn’t focused on the act of killing, but the act post mortem. The killings seemed very impulsive, and rushed, while the act dismembering victims is slow and methodical. It’s not easy to do. It takes time and real effort. It seems that he took great joy in the dismemberments.

I got this show today Monday in Belfast Ireland, another fantastic podcast. I love the way they are so dedicated to finding the truth not the newspaper story line. This was disturbing only for his da he could have killed more. you take finding the truth all the way and his mental health too.

Belfast in Maine must be sunny and exciting here it is usually grey cloudy and rain but tod day we have broken our weather record ever with 30 degrees , we melt at 18 /20 degrees . I remember when this happened so clearly because I was living in Waterford Maine with my girlfriend, but traveled through Bethel and Newry often on my way to Andover to my girlfriend’s parents house. My girlfriend’s sister had dated Christian Nielsen in high school. I remember when she told me about that after these murders took place. I was shocked when I heard that, and also shocked because I had been in the Upton area when Neilson was dismembering and burning the body.
Just subscribed to this channel! Only found it a couple of nights ago but have really enjoyed what I've seen so far. Being from Scotland, I haven't heard of many of these stories really so it's been great expanding my true crime knowledge.

This means so much to us, because we do really try to strive for these things, and a lot of people seem to miss it, they think we are defending the killers or focusing on irrelevant things. However when you recognize what we're doing like that, it makes my entire month. I've never played LA Noire! It is Rockstar and in a noir setting so I have a feeling I really would like it. I'll wishlist it on Steam!

I'm a fairly new subscriber. After watching the first video I binge watched all of your videos. You guys never disappoint!!
I knew James Whitehurst. Not well. But I worked as an Airbrush artist in OOB and he would come to the shop and watch us paint. He was a kind person. I was a bit of an arrogant sh*t back then. I called him “crazy legs” behind his back and I would complain about how he was always trying to nickel us on the art work. He would ask for the price of something simple and once we started painting it for him, he would keep asking us to add “one little thing”, which would add up until you were doing a lot more work than you charged him. But looking back, it was always something for his estranged family. I recall it being a grandson or granddaughter. I even had a few beers with him at his apartment once. He lived above a local bar. All he did was talk about his family. It’s really sad what happened to him. He was a sweet guy.

This is very similar to a case here in Australia. Martin Bryant killed a whole bunch of people at a tourist attraction/Cafe in Tasmania. He showed no remorse and was later diagnosed with Aspergers.
The show 'Sunday Night' did a special on him not too long ago, with an update on his situation in jail, is really interesting and worth a look in.

Yeh, He was actually MindControlled, Check out the 'Fodder Note' on TH-cam. Yes it's true. Should make your investigation that little bit more interesting. But most Harden their hearts because it means they have been decieved or more likely to hard to believe some in the Government would let such a thing happen.

I was a failure to thrive and that means I wasn't on the average scale for weight and height and couldn't get to those average levels. He was very small before he went on the hunger strike for his height. That's what that could mean. I was also disabled when I was born which means in and out of Shriners for 10 yrs with surgeries, therapies, and after care.
It's so sad how easily people with mental health diagnosis slip through the cracks and then you hear their names in the news for unspeakable crimes. Our country could do so much better and save so many lives!
Hang on, just because someone has a mental illness DOES NOT mean they're a murderer or a psychopath. There's a stigma that's associated with mental conditions and that's part of why people don't seek help, of course, the whole mental healthcare services suck, also.
My partner has schizophrenia and ADHD. I, myself, have mental health issues, and neither of us could be Ever harm another human or even an animal.
Just goes to show why ppl are so fascinated by killers and WHY do they kill? Much is still just speculative and other stuff has been proven to have an effect during childhood. However, there are many killers who grew up living relatively normal childhood.

What I did say is that we do not do a good enough job at treating and caring for those with mental illnesses in the US. If we did, then maybe those who could have been treated would not have offended. I am well aware that many a crime is done by those without DX.
And I know all too well how horribly people are treated (or not treated) bc I've been a nurse for well over a decade and I have a daughter with a dx and we fight with doctors and insurance often.
I love you guys. You do amazing work which I'm sure is not easy. You show pure emotion and sympathy. Thank you for bringing nothing but facts forward in these cases .

I watched Christian's "Signs of a Psychopath" episode on the ID Channel & you guys summed it up according to that show. And you are also correct that the whole 30 minute show (if memory serves me right it was a 30 segment), is based on actual recordings of Christian, his own words from his interrogation, as well as bringing the detectives to Jimmy's murder site. However you guys went further with the research. Great job! Thank you!!!

@@TheMiseryMachine I love to drive too, it’s soothing though I’d prefer to be on the water. I grew up on a small island so I can’t get enough of being on the ocean. The drive down to Homer is beautiful though. The fireweed is in full blue and looks gorgeous against the aqua teal color of the Kenai River.

I like how the prison buddy minimizes the hunger strike on one hand, that it was exaggerated by the media, then says he almost died.
Murderous rampages are contained events. Even people who are legitimately insane aren't in a perpetual state of murderous rampage; most of the time they are capable of playing cards and having a conversation (though it would be apparent before long that they are insane). If they are not legitimately insane, and Christian Nielson was found not to be insane, then of course he can play cards and pretend to be upset about his murderous rampage and have excuses for why his victims were to blame for their grizzly deaths.
I'm sure everyone in prison has all kinds of reasons why their victims are the real perpetrators.

This story is absolutely insane!! He without a doubt sounds like a phycopathic "monster." I know I've said time and time again that I'll never understand why people do the things that they do but honestly I never will. Ya know, I've been "over worked" as they say but I didn't go around and start murdering people!! And I've also been treated horribly but I didn't murder those people either!! He truly disgusts me and the crimes he committed are unforgivable besides being unexcusable. I feel sorry for Christian's dad in the aspect that he has to deal with his son's nonsense 🤬🤬 (crimes) but I feel especially sorry for those poor children....they lost their mother, father, and grandmother!! Obviously they don't have anbody now. It's pretty evident that those who kill don't really think about the consequences that the others involved have to deal with and if they do they honestly just don't care which is really sad but I guess it is what it is. Off topic though you two really do a wonderful job and I really do appreciate all the hard work you guys do!! Thank you 🥰

Ppl have been studying why killers kill for a VERY long time. I don't believe we'll ever fully understand everything..
There’s been times of chronic abuse that I wanted to kill that person and I would plan it in my head then thought about losing my family, my pets, gardening…so I always thought let that person be miserable and I’ll keep my freedom.

Oh I don't doubt it, some try to. I have been writing prisoners off and on for the last 17 years. Some find it strange, but it's really not. Folks consume true crime via podcasts, TH-cam, books, Netflix - I just happen to go straight to the source. I haven't written in a bit since we've been so busy. The criminals never talk to you about their cases. They do talk a lot about prison life, which I find interesting. Much love ♡ Yergy
I was a little annoyed when the father suggested that the mass murderer wait for counsel. Obviously for most people it's the right move but this guy deserves the electric chair not less prison, and if his father was thinking about preventing such a thing, asking for counsel is NOT the tac an insane person takes.
His dad was in a difficult spot, I have a hard time faulting him when he just found out his son just killed multiple people out of the blue, but he did get the cops there so I commend him for that.
I'm more put off by Christian thinking he can just commit mass murder and then call the cops to figure out a way to get anything but life in prison for mass murder. How narcissistic can a person be?

My ex girlfriend and I lived next door to jimmy whitehust in oldorchard beach . Above the whaler to be exact . He was a very kind man and would lend a hand to anyone who he could help . Yes he had polio and his physical attributes were limited . But yes a man that wanted to be closer to his kids . We got to know him really well . Did lots of hanging out with him and was truly a kid at heart. My heart broke when I heard this news years back and just came across this video . Jimmy certainly didn’t do anything to deserve this . Not saying anyone said he belittled him , but yeh I knew this man jimmy well and never did I think he deserved notching but to be close to his children who he adored . Rest in peace jimmy …. They lost their daddy, their grandma, and their mommy! All of the deaths were in a short time frame and happened without any notice. They didn't even get to say goodbye. These kids are going to not only have major trust issues, extreme depression, and most likely anxiety. These poor babies! Rarely does a story make me cry, but this one has me crying. Just the thought of this happening to my kids makes me nauseous. I hope they had other kind, loving family members who took care of them & raised them!!! I'm only halfway through the video, so I don't even want to think about what's going to happen next. Like how can this story get any worse? 😭💔
