v cute sounds but not many people are going to be able to enjoy this instrument when it is priced at $800 that is a sickening cost for the build quality.
To adjust for inflation, $200 in 1985 is equivalent to approximately $585 in 2024. This represents an increase of around 192.56% in the general price level over the 39-year period, reflecting the cumulative inflation rate of 2.79% per year
Looks cool! I was really interested untill I saw the price. This thing has the same features as the 80's one and it still sounds like a budget 90's keyboard. How is it this expensive?
Nerds and idiots (like me) think its really cool despite not being very versatile or cutting edge. I got a used Korg Minilogue for about 400$, aside from lacking the drum machine and strumbar, it is better and has far more practical use for me and most musicians. But no other standalone device can make exactly the same sounds as the Omnichord, and it looks really fun. If I had any money I would own one too. Also, nerds and idiots who were kids in the 2010s, may have heard it a lot in Adventure Time, and nostalgia usually = big payday.
Hopefully the MIDI implementation is less weird than the original, but I still don't know who would buy an $800 reissue when you can get an original for $400. Just looking at the speaker grille and the strumplate (which looks like they got it to fit by cutting off a corner with scissors) it's obvious the new one has significantly lower build quality.
Was expecting it to be gimmicky and not particularly useful if a bit of fun, but 3 minutes in and already no it's clear some real thought and work went into this, these are some really cool sounds and the parameter adjustments are well thought out. This could actually be a really cool thing to use as a musical tool, would love one to play around with. Have to say Bravo to Suzuki on that one!
$800? Did they only make eleven of them or something? Physically, this is an injection molded plastic case, a couple of small circuit boards, and maybe $15-20 worth of volume electronic components. It doesn't even have a display. I get that it costs money to reverse engineer and translate something old to new technology, but that's a fixed cost. They should be selling these for $149 - $199. It's not 1985 anymore. You don't need to hire an entire floor of an engineering firm to devise entire RAM, ROM, and ASIC layouts to create a fixed function product. There are general purpose high volume microcontrollers that can do all of this, and more, on a _single_ $4 chip. It's also much cheaper to mass manufacture things than it was then, considering not only industry optimizations but also the advancements in design simplicity. *replaces Batman symbol in spotlight with a Behringer logo*
Obviously you should start working on that competitor. This is a small batch device that the tiny company has brought back to the market because people kept asking them to. Also, presume the cases for musical instrument are 3d printed. Master moulds for PIM are too expensive for the volumes.
Just wait. The second hand market will soon be flooded with them. There are people who have made good music with them but very few if any for whom this is their sole or primary instrument. The addition of MIDI is nice but if you are using it for that you soon realize it would be better if they cut the price and dropped the cheesy drum patterns and Casio like tones and just provided the strumming section! Then it would be unique. Of course, some including me, like cheese! We all need cheese.
