      Adam Hall I think it’s a lot funnier in the context of the original Frankenstein Movie, but if you’ve already seen that and still didn’t find Young Frankenstein funny then I think it’s fair. It’s a lot dryer and feels more like Gene Wilders humour than Mel Brooks humour.

    • @wkanost
      @wkanost 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Adam Hall - I think the difference is YF is played straight. Whereas his other films are much more broadly written and acted. Brooks really wanted to put YF characters in the same atmosphere as the originals were. So there isn’t as much “Hey we’re in a movie here!” Comedy as you’ll see in Blazing Saddles or Spaceballs.

    I want to add my vote to a watching of Young Frankenstein. However, I would highly suggest that you watch the original Frankenstein movie with Boris Karloff first. It’s quite a bit older than the other movies you have watched, but it should be easy to find and it is a classic film. Mel Brooks is a huge fan of the original and even managed to use some of the same props and decorations for Young Frankenstein. They would be two movies perfect for October. One of my favorite movies of all time. Zero mostel gene wilder dick Shawn and Kenneth Mars. It’s only around 80 minutes long and moves like a jet plane. Kenneth Mars gives new meaning to the word inspired, a time like this calls for schnapps! But my favorite is zero as max raising his arms to the heavens and shouting “ I want that money!!!!!!” Almost as a primal scream. And dick Shawn “down in the sewer with the yick running through her”. I had better stop here.

    "Robin Hood: Men in Tights" is a good Mel Brooks comedy, and somewhat more recent than the others you've reviewed as it came out in the 90's.
    Towards the end Sir Patrick Stewart did an awesome job playing King Richard (in my opinion, at least).
    There are a few scenes with Dave Chappelle doing a short (story recap) rap & dance routine that I believe haven't held up over time & just felt cringe worthy last time I watched the dvd,
    I don't want to say too much more about it (spoilers) but it is a dang good movie, definitely worth watching at least once.

    One of Mel Brooks' best movies is Young Frankenstein, which will be in keeping with the Halloween theme. But it would be best to see Frankenstein (1931), The Bride of Frankenstein, Son of Frankenstein, and Ghost of Frankenstein first. You have just enough time to watch all of these each Monday between now and Halloween. Mel Brooks saw the first two in the theater, and was reluctant at first to do a parody, because he loved them so much. Clive Barker, creator of the Hellraiser series, says that Bride of Frankenstein is the best horror movie ever made, and he's not the only one. I have to admit that the second two aren't as good, but they are referenced directly in Young Frankenstein.

    The original "the producers" was mel Brooks first big hit, decades later he made it a hit Broadway musical, and there is also a film adaptation of the musical, but I think the original is better, also if you're ever allowed to go out and do things again, seeing the musical live is worth it.

      I agree. But the context of Rocky Horror is important. I'd actually tell her to break her normal rules about knowing nothing coming in and read its Wikipedia first. She can't replicate the circumstances of how generations of people viewed this movie in theater, at midnight viewings, and what they did there, but a normal first time watcher dragged to see it WOULD be briefed on this by the people who take them. The ORIGINAL viewing perspective of the people who FIRST saw the movie without those rituals is actually less relevant.
