Super Mario 64 "1 key TAS" in 4'21"04*

This video was made by Tyler Kehne, MKDasher, sonicpacker, Snark, SilentSlayers, Gaehne D, Eru, ToT, Plush, sm64expert, Superdavo0001 and dar gos.
1 frame was saved over the previous fastest BitFS TAS when not accounting for lag frames.
Additionally the new improved camera angles have saved a few lagframes when playing the TAS back on console.
The previous fastest "1 key TAS" according to console timing was 4'21"32.

This game gotta have the highest level of movement optimization that has ever been achieved ever. Optimizing quarter-frame movement to save units here and there to save ONE frame? I've never been so fucking impressed by a 1 frame time save before.

ShadoXFM But what it does have is 1/256 of a pixel. 64 is still more optimized because humans can do smb but not 64
i think smb is close to sm64 level of optimization, it has some precise values you need to control like subpixels or subspeed, but sm64 is probably more optimized imo

If a unit is a centimeter (which is about right if Mario is the size of a normal human), then the 1:16-1:23 segment involves Mario going about 2 million m/s, somewhere in the ballpark of Mach 6000.

Nice improvements ! Why the console timing is lower than the emulator, usually it's the opposite ?
Emulator lags more when loading levels iirc, whereas console lags more inside levels. The in-level lag was reduced enough such that the loading difference saved more than in-level-lag costs

I worked it out by taking a frame from Jongyon's video's time, so you might be right if his is either wrong or not up-to-date

No , cause of black screen of death in upper stairs
No, you need the key to load the upstairs and nothing is behind the door if you blj trough the final key door on the lobby map
And upstairs and lobbys are in diffrent maps

Where was the frame found?
BitFS, just before the first jumpdive (plus some other units later in the level). It's hard to explain why but instead of taking a 1/4 qframe transition (losing 3/4 of a frame) & being on the ground for 1 frame when straining before the jumpdive, we stay on the ground for an extra frame & get a 4/4 qframe landing. You can see the dust-frame where this happens.
Staying on the ground & taking a dust-frame costs some distance (and you lose a qframe later because you land too early on the next platform), but getting the 4/4 makes up for this & more, and with a few more units Dargos found later, is just enough to save a frame.
