    14:40 - Blue is significant in Judaism. G-d commanded the use of one blue thread in the tallit (prayer shawl) because blue is the color of the sea, which resembles the sky, and the sky reminds us of G-d and his throne - the inclusion of blue in the tallit may be to remind us to not just look at the world but to be an active part of it. The concept of tikkun olam - to heal the world - is a central and defining point in Judaism and for me, personally, is perhaps the most essential and fundamental aspect of how I see my faith. The use of blue in Chanukah seems to be mainly driven by consumerism and the desire to market the holiday, from what I can tell. Blue and white are the colors of the Israeli flag so that factors into it as well. This is all my personal understanding of things and doesn’t reflect the entirety of Judaism (see also: Two Jews, Three Opinions)

      Smugs ya gotta check out hannukah harry. My brothers and i about thirty years ago found the santa claus for we jews. Each year as we grew away from each other, harry would get mailed to one of us each year. My nieces use to know the holiday was near. Never did have a hannukah bush but we always had decoration time at our non Jewish friends homes. It was a fun time.

    There can be two kinds of leaves on holly. The spikey ones are the vegetative leaves and the smooth ones are reproductive leaves - meaning that the plant produces them around the time it is flowering and bearing fruits (the red berries).
    This is what I recall from botany class at uni, nearly 20 years ago. This should at least be true for the holly we have here in Europe, which is called _Ilex aquifolium_.

    • @Cecily-Pimprenelle
      @Cecily-Pimprenelle 11 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I had no idea about the why, but I was browsing the comment section to look for a "there's two kind of leaves on the same tree" one before adding one attesting to that.
      Source : there are a couple of holly trees near my paren't house.

    According to Google's AI, "In like Flynn" is WWII slang the pilots used to say referring to Errol Flynn's promiscuous ways with women. As in the pilots were able to slip into wherever they were going easily. There were other possible origins, but that one was the most interesting/fun.

    Blue is the traditional color of Advent the season leading up to Christmas. Advent starts on the first Sunday and December and goes through Christmas Eve. Blue is associated with the virgin Mary. There is also the 3rd Sunday in Advent Gaudete, which means rejoice. It's color is pink/rose. So the Advent candles are lit Blue, Blue, pink, blue and white on Christmas.

    • @Cecily-Pimprenelle
      @Cecily-Pimprenelle 11 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Actually purple, not blue. (The latter being indeed associated with Mary, and the former with conversion - same with Lent, and there's also a Sunday-in-pink during that time (Laetare)).
      That being said, there's no strict Rule about the candles' colour (it's more a vestment thing).
      Advent sometimes begin the last Sunday of November (4th-before-Christmas-day).

    • @Erzas_Art_Atelier
      @Erzas_Art_Atelier 11 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @Cecily-Pimprenelle my church, LCMS, switched to blue for advent in the 2000s. It was to separate Advent, a season of anticipation, from Lent, a season of repentence. I think, and I'm not sure, the Catholics have had a longer history of blue for advent. I did forget, there are 2 pink Sundays but most churches don't have pink paraments.

    • @Cecily-Pimprenelle
      @Cecily-Pimprenelle 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Erzas_Art_Atelier I'm a Catholic, and I never saw blue for Advent in any church (I do get the logic of your church - but yes, we do keep the focus on purification of the heart (visibly, I mean - I'm sure it's also a concern of the Lutheran Church no matter the liturgical colour used!). The Orthodox (at least the Greek Orthodox) consider Advent a "little Lent" and do fast in preparation for Christmas.
      Not all Roman Catholic churches have pink linens (not the right word - English isn't m'y native language), but the parishes I attended (and my current one) do. The ones who don't keep the purple. Blue isn't an official colour (I think mots feasts of Mary are "white") but is commonly used as an accent for her. Red for Pentecoast but also for martyrs - I dont know whether you use the same "code".
      Anyways, thanks for your elaboration !

    ... In catholicism, the colour of Chrismas is white (or gold).
    Red and green are liturgical colours, but they're not particularly associated with Christmas and are used (separately) throughout the year.
    Pretty certain the red-and-green colour scheme comes from holly - greenery that could be brought indoor without losing colour - and pretty much the only available colour pop in Europe in winter? No source, just speculating here.

    Arctus/Arktos in Greek myth was a centaur who fought a particular bunch of spearmen (source Wikipedia). His name meant "bear".
    (Also: Arctic from the Greek word for bear referring to the constellation Ursus Major. Saw a reddit comment suggesting the Greek word was a variant on "brown thing" because hunters were afraid naming the beast would bring it upon them. Less sure about the accuracy of this bit!)

    Okay, gingerbread is linked to honeycakes because of the recipes. I have a hard gingerbread recipe from the 1830s that's very similar to a honeycake recipe, and I've heard suggestions from food historians (talk about an incredible niche!) that gingerbread MAY have origins in honeycakes. Of course, there's no evidence and it's mostly based on how the recipe is constructed and a logical leap there.
    Also, the novel The House of the Seven Gables by Nathaniel Hawthorne starts early with Hepzibah Pyncheon selling decorated gingerbread figures to a local schoolboy, and they come in a number of shapes, not just men. If memory serves there was a fully standing elephant (because New England and our elephants...) so the idea of building a structure in gingerbread was likely common enough to be understood in 1851 when it was produced, and probably earlier for Hawthorne to know about it.
    Plus, there's a historic archetechtural feature called "gingerbread dentalwork" in Victorian houses, because it makes them look like decorated gingerbread houses. I've seen contemporary references to installing "gingerbread" on the houses, so it was obviously a thing by the 1870s, I think was when the ledger I found it in was? So, obviously the Victorians were well acquainted with gingerbread houses.
    Long story, but the end result is gingerbread houses were clearly known in America by the Victorians, and likely in Europe even earlier because that's where it appears to have originated, so the play in 1983, after I was born (into a family where gingerbread houses were a thing for generations prior) was clearly not involved at all.

    Gingerbread houses don't come from the story of Hansel and Gretel. The tradition of making gingerbread houses is thought to have originated in Germany in the 16th to 18th centuries. The tradition became more popular after the publication of the Brothers Grimm's fairy tale Hansel and Gretel in 1812.

Peter Maffay is big in Germany, a renowned children's entertainer and musician, advocate for environmental protection and a lot more since his early days.
    Tabaluga is an animation show and also a gameshow with and for children with an educational approach. There is Arktos who wants to destroy the environment for money, but Tabaluga and his friends stop him. So a typical storyline for that, but honestly I think it's good kids television.

    Gingerman cookies are so delicious and not a custom here 😭 but only knowing medieval traditions, more than european history, I can say all christmas sweets started 1: as a way to preserve food longer and 2: monasteries, who had the resoueses to have spices like ginger, and the obligation to cook for loyal visitors and for the community in special special specially dates (you had more luck in the town market still)
    Couldn't find any gingerman coockie

      @TinyBlueAnthropologist have no idea. Anyway, if we are talking about 19th century, Christmas tree started to appear in wealthy families. People in villages didn't consider it as a Christmas symbol even in the beginning of 20th century.
      It wide spreads in 1930s, in cities, within Soviet official anti-religious campaign as New Year tree as opposite to Christmas. Thus decoration was produced on factories, also people would put some random candies.
      Still have never in my life I've seen or heard anything about spiders. I can be wrong, as you say, but not to my 40 years of Christmas -New Year celebration experience

    I am not completely certain why our creator likes the color blue but we are told to make tzitzit which are little tassels that hang on the 4 corners of our garments of white and blue. I believe is a jewish color not a hanukkah color

    Christmas has nothing to with Christ

    Green doesn't represent rebirth during Christmas that is for Easter. Easter is the celebration of the resurrection and liturgy wise green(if the denomination uses green) is used after the whole Lent/Easter/Pentecost season symbolizing new hope and the resurrection. Green is not traditionally used for the Advent season purple or blue are. Blue was historically used because it was cheaper and easier to produce. Green and red isn't even Christian propaganda since they tend to preference white, silver, gold, and purple. Some will use red for Christmas although that's also more to do with the Lent/Easter/Pentecost season. Christian propagandist tend to use liturgy colors for the holiday they are propagandizing they also tend to push to change the traditional decorations to symbols of Jesus like doves and fish. If red and green are used as Christian symbols it would be because the color combo was absorbed from pagans and then they fit it to the faith. Red would become the blood of Christ and the green is probably a symbol for eternal life since the green is significantly different then the Easter green.
    Arktos is the romanized version of the ancient Greek word for bear and was a mythical centaur who fought against the Lapith spearmen and the fight is depicted on Heracles' shield as depicted by Hesiod.

      Easter is white traditionally. The season of Trinity or the Time of the Church is green to symbolise through growth of the church. Advent is blue for Mary and Lent is purple for repentance and the royalty of Christ. The only red season is Pentecost which symbolizes the tongues of flame on the apostles and the Holy Spirit.

    There is no connection to fertility in Norse history (to which I have an ancestral bloodline). Baldur had a brother who wanted him dead. Baldur's mother queen Frigg to all living things loved went to the Forest one summer and made all life in the forest promise not to aid in killing her son. Unfortunately it was summer mistletoe only grows in winter. Therefore Baldur's brother was able to form an arrow from mistletoe. Frigg was a goddess of love and proclaimed that no one should kill her other son out of revenge and declared that mistletoe would be a sign of love and those who came in contact with it should kiss in honor of Baldur.

    So why such disgust at Christ? It is Christ-mas? Shouldn’t you show as much respect for all religions? Your face doesn’t contort in disgust when talking about Pagans. Nor should it. Just a thought
