Just wanna add to the issue between journalism that’s factual vs opinion based journalism, I think a part of why wee expect opinions and analysis comes from our high school system tasking us with written projects that includes thesis’. I had a documentary project in my com tech class in high school where we were expected to ensure a clear sided opinion in our work, and I’m sure many ppl practicing their journalism now have been hugely influenced by the schooling system to create opinion prices first and facts to go along with it more than just providing a clear, unbiased news
Factual journalism is an oxymoron imo. Underlying bias will always influence what is written and even if an opinion is not overtly expressed, it can still be conveyed in the information that is purposely omitted or clouded.
@@absolutewanker9384 You can write your opinion, make your biases clear, and try to accurately represent other viewpoints the best that you can. Yay! I love JJ's channel! And I love this podcast. I really enjoy these conversations you're having and I think you're covering a lot of important and interesting topics. Keep up the good work!
I think one of the main issues of nationalism is that it was more or less an old reactionary movement birthed in the death of empires - its not fit for purpose. Being created via newly indepenent countries who were generally oppressed shunned these supranational states and wanted to give power back to the people (often based on ethnicity). Or simply ruling countries whose empires were falling needed to find a new myth to unite the people. But in this globalised world where diversity in many countries is increasing and where the power of the internet has given voice to minority groups who were traditionally silenced point out the hypocrisy/exclusiveness/flaws of said nationalism. Add in the growing inequality and complex issues the world faces its often easier to wrap yourself in the flag and blame outsiders for your issues. But expelling all the immigrants wont solve your problems. Disconnecting from the world wont solve your problems. The issue is finding a way to allow these different groups to unify under a collective identity and talk through the problems being faced. The resulting chaos (I would count riots and protests as low level compared to civil war) seems like dysfunction to a lot of people and this dysfunction makes people look to their often mythicised past for a stability that never existed. But as you said low level chaos is not bad in my opinion, if it is not crippling it forces people to adapt and rethink the way they do things.
As the world progresses things such as nationalism will eventually die as the world becomes more and more globalised. Nationalism can have some disastrous effects both social and economic it in my opinion breeds hate and division. Nationalism isn't based on an individual identity but rather it's your dedication to the state. Nationalism will always cause the demise of individual identity.
