    I was ironically just reminded I need to get one of those kits - just had a leak repaired at my garage yesterday. >_< Excellent demonstration of how that process works.

    I liked your tool kit - much better tools than the one I own. I had to do a plug last week and couldn’t get the plug in until I slightly warmed up the plug to make it softer and in she went. Cheers

    Plugs were the accepted type of repair for decades. I typically drill the hole larger and ream out, makes it easier to insert the plug; and I use rubber cement as the lubricant/sealer. Most tire shops will say stuff like too close to the edge, tire is 1 month over 6 years old, and I even had a tire shop tell me I had two holes so close together that they couldn't patch (funny: soap bubble test and a single lug fixed that for me, several years ago), and all tried to sell me new tires.

    Great to hear from you again Greg thanks for the video!
    Many years ago far from civilization there was that light “ssssssss” sound from a tire. No repair kit in the car as you recommend but I did have my tools, wood screws and some of the kids gum from the back seat. Yup, drove a screw wrapped in gum into the hole I found and it never leaked again. Kind of ashamed to admit I never repaired it properly.

    Yes you are an angel for posting. As a woman it appears that it will require a good bit of strength to ream and plug the tire. However I may just try it out on an old tire to get the experience. Always appreciate the youtube videos!

      Use a drill bit one size bigger than the plug to ream the hole

    Greg, love your videos. Already knew about this trick and I thought when you said "cheap fix" you were gonna pull out the autozone-special tire repair kit. I've used cheap ones from the store before, and eventually i had it with the tools breaking on me, so I ended up getting the same kit you have here, and you're right, it's a great one with the much needed stronger tools in them. The amount of force you need to exert on the tire to bore out the puncture hole and then to insert the plug is pretty intense and will definitely break the really cheap tools.

    6:32 Hi. Appreciate your tire 6:32 repair video. Question? After you cut off the plug tails, do apply fire to it for a few seconds? I have seen it done but do not understand why. The same is done when applying a patch on the inside.

    I recently had a 1/4 inch dia bolt lodged in a nearly new tire. Took it to the shop who sold me the tires. They elected to vulcanize the area from the inside instead of using a plug or patch saying the hole was too big. This procedure was much more detailed and time consuming but left me feeling much safer. I am not saying that your method is bad, just that it seems to depend on the size of the hole whether or not to use this kit.

    Some of the Slime type products are also good for fixing punctures. And you can even put it in your tire before you get a nail so it "fixes" them on the fly and won't cause you to get stranded with a flat.

    When I was a motorcycle messenger, I once had an Avon rear tyre with a few of these repairs in it. You can buy co2 cannisters and a valve to reinflate the tyre as well and go well with a kit like this.

    Maybe I'm not as strong as you are or the diameters of my punctures have been smaller, but I've always found pushing in the plug too hard. Solution: Use an electric drill and bit just large enough to make passing the plug possible with effort.

    I’m not that weak and couldn’t get the plug to go in. So I got my wife and had her pushing on my elbow as I pushed to get that plug-in? It’s still wouldn’t go in. Then I used a clamp that you squeeze multiple times to close it, (carpenter’s use them) between the rim and the handle of the plug tool. Went in real easy.

  • @FortunateSon
    @FortunateSon 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Little confused. You used a vaseline type of lubricant in your kit. Other videos I've seen put some "rubber cement" type of product on the plug to trigger vulcanization. Is yours not really vulcanizing, but just plugging with sheer mass? Or is there some product already on it? It seems like the lube would keep them from bonding anyways? Thanks!!

    • @rooster3019
      @rooster3019 ปีที่แล้ว

      Had me thinking too. Maybe the "lube" was not petrolium jelly, but someting like sterno or some vulcanizing quality goop. I use rubber solvent cement make for this purpose, but maybe that stuff was also purpose made.

    • @jacek2227
      @jacek2227 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nowadays, no tire shop will want to do any work on a tire that has been plugged this way. They are afraid of being sued - that is what I was plainly told.
      So if you can, have the tire patched from inside. Otherwise, the plug will last long time - speaking from my experience. Recently I had a tire with 6 plugs (my son drove over a box of staples) and it lasted 8000 miles until the tire was bald and due for replacement.
      BTW, 10 or more years ago, even tire shops would use a plug method occasionally.

  • @ramtek2702
    @ramtek2702 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    There is no worse or dumber way to fix a tire than plugging it. The repair process does much more damage than the original puncture and the tire maker will void your warranty. Guys like this need to be banned from TH-cam.
