    Great video. My helmet is now two years old and absolutely love it with one exception. It comes with an anti fog/scratch visor and works surprisingly well with only a little condensation on sides over time. My issue is that the visor is anti fog but drop down lens is not. You’re cruising down trails , beautiful sunny Day and you decide to drop down the sun lens, three min later you can’t see a thing because of fogging. Doh! My only other comment is that the graphics fade from uv exposure over time.

    Great real world, long term user review! Well done, as always. I considered one of these, but when I tried it on I found that the peak wasn’t quite long enough for me. I’m glad it mostly works for you though, because it’s definitely a feature rich helmet for a great price. I have an Arai Quantum X that fits my planet-like round head. It’s the first helmet that I’ve worn that doesn’t hurt after an hour. I also have the external sunvisor thing on it (VAS visor) which works as either a mini peak or a sunshade. While shopping for a proper off-road helmet, I bought an HJC DS-1, but it didn’t fit my big ol’ noggin, and they don’t go any higher than XL. I’ve tried the Arai XD4, and it actually fit well. It’s SO dang expensive, but I’m saving up to buy one now.

    Hey Amanda! I have the same helmet. It is my first ADV helemt as well and I do really enjoy it! I agree with you on the turbulance from the visor. What I did was put weather stripping in between a point near the screws to attach the visor and shield to put some tension on the visor in an effort to remove a lot of the lateral vibration. It has worked pretty well so far. I do think I need to go a little thicker on the weather stripping though. But having said this, it does help. That vibration from the visor is also where a lot of the noise comes from because it resonates down through the shell to the old listening things on the sides of our heads. The next time you're riding at 60+ just reach up and grab the vibrating visor and I think you will see how much quieter the helmet becomes. And that is why I am on a bit of a "quest" to stiffen the visor. At some point I would really like to get a nice Klim ADV helmet or something along those lines but that will be when the contents of my wallet allow HaHa.....So, for the price point and what you get for that price the Scorpion fits the bill nicely. To answer your question....the Scorpion is my favorite so far. I can DM you a pic of my weather stripping placement if you like.

    I love my at950. I have had it for 1 year you're right that sun visor is a must but I live in Arizona the flip-down goggles are the best for the Desert Sun I picked up mine because the pads on the inside can be swapped I have a skinny face so I had to go with the medium helmet with small cheek pads in it to keep it from buffeting and I love the fact I can pull the pads out and wash them and put them back in in the summertime I like to put them in a little damp and then I have an AC on my head thanks for the great bed always look forward to seeing them keep the rubber side down

    • @AstheMagpieFlies
      @AstheMagpieFlies  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes! Lol I always forget to mention the removable pads because my last couple helmets have had them. I think they're becoming more universal than they used to be, but def Important to be able to wash the liner to extend the life of the helmet!

    I've had this same helmet for about 1.5 years. Amanda nailed most of the pros and cons. Mine is a little tight around the cheeks - it has gotten better with time, but after about 4 hours it gets annoying and gives me a headache. A smaller annoyance is the drop down sun shield. It is about 1/4" too short. When riding into the sun, I have to tilt my head slightly down or I'll get sun coming in my eyes underneath the shield. My biggest complaint is exactly what she mentioned - closing the face shield becomes a pain, in that it doesn't lock in you have to really force it to lock (or lift the release mechanism when you close the face shield). For the money, you can't beat it, even given the above mentioned issues. Oh, before I forget, the manufacturers need to invest in loc tight. Almost every bolt/screw on the helmet has loosened up and had to be retightened.

    How is the wind noise compared to a dirt bike helmet? I saw these at the shop I've been buying from but was wondering if its any quieter. Anything above 40 to 45 mph for mine gets very loud. Good video review.

    Favorite helmet? Not brand related but the modular type. When I think back to the days I rode with basically just a skull cap, I'm so grateful I never did a face plant. Modulars, as you indicated, are perfect for gas station stops and as one who wears glasses, I can put the helmet on, adjust the glasses, then lower the modular face piece.

    Hi. I'm getting back into riding after almost 10 years and need to replace my now 15 year old Shoei full face. I like the idea of a lift up chin bar. I can't think of the number of times I've been riding all day trips across the Southwest and have tried to squirt water into my mouth from my water bottle over the chin bar while doing 70 plus on a windy day. Ugg!
    I have two questions about the visor. 1) I read that it's noisy but do you get any whistling sounds? That would be unacceptable to me. 2) Does removing the visor eliminate the noise?
    Thanks and safe rides!

    Great review! All the good practical things I'd like to know about a helmet. :-) If I had a round head, that would be my helmet. I've got a long oval, so choices are limited, and I've never found a "favorite." But they're all better than my first "round" helmet! It was my first year of riding, and I just figured it was normal to have a red spot on my forehead and a headache every time I rode. I loved riding so much, I just didn't care! It was great to find other helmet shapes and ride WITHOUT a headache!

    Do you still use this helmet? I just picked one up on clearance because the AT960 came out. I noticed tremendous vibration from the peak and a drone inside the helmet. Do you experience this? Gonna change out the windshield on my Tuareg because it could be funneling the wind into the helmet.

    If you are looking at the AT-950 and want all of it features just pull the trigger. I'v had mine for a couple of years and have been very happy. Also this helmet does have an ECE rating. Its just not on a sticker on the helmet. Its sold in Europe as the ADX-1. Unless they build the same helmet different ways but if you google it multiple sources say its the same helm.

    Favorite full face - Shoei RT1200. I feel safe, my peripheral vision is fantastic, it quiet!! Room for speakers, It's not a generic shell with extra padding for a smaller head. It's actually a small shell with correct padding. Has emergency pulls for padding in case of accident. Lots of vents. Has pinlock system for fogging that works well. Has chin curtain that is removable and breath guard. Doesn't press my eyeglasses against my head. Cons: It's a full-face helmet that fits snugly. Add glasses after you put it on and take off glasses before taking off helmet. No pull down sun visor. You can buy a sun visor, but it replaces the clear one. Expensive! ****** Favorite ever, ever, ever Harley 3/4 with drop down sun shield. I loved that sun shield. That helmet didn't feel heavy, but my experience with 3/4 wasn't all that extensive at the time. It fit my crazy head shape well, and I could just move my eyes to see speedometer instead of using a precious second to glance down (never let guard down in DC metro traffic). I wear glasses and it didn't press them against my ears. Cons: 3/4 - 60% of people land on chin in accident. That worried me. No speaker cut-outs (at the time-2012). **** sorry for double favs and none AT. (edits: bah, sorry about misspellings and such)

    Great vid Amanda, I have been wearing the AT950 for about two years and I really like it. Because of my Charlie Brown head it’s a xxl but I put in xxxl cheek pads. I don’t have a problem listening to audiobooks on the road with my Cardo Freecom

    • @AstheMagpieFlies
      @AstheMagpieFlies  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks David!
      Are you riding with the visor on when you go down the freeway?
      Speaker placement to line up directly with your ears is also a factor, my speakers aren't quite lined up with my ears. But, not sure I'd want to be able to push the volume any louder so I could hear the audiobook going down the freeway, the decibals of the wind noise in combo with the pumped up volume would probably do a lot of damage to my hearing. Probably more than I already have lol I'm fine wearing in-ear headphones to listen to stories.

    I've got the exact same helmet, and when it's due for replacement, I'm probably going to get another one of these. I never take the visor off, even on the highway. I lost one of the little visor retaining pins on my last trip and had to go find a little bolt, a metal washer, and a plastic washer to replace it. I love the massive viewport and of course the styling on it. I've got a metallic gold visor but if I pop it all the way up, the little pads on the bottom of the sunvisor thing rub against it and take off the shiny, which is frustrating.
    I do wear memory foam tips on the earplugs that run to my cardo packtalk slim, so wind noise doesn't really bother me until the tips start to wear out and no longer stay in as well as they should. I didn't realize that the vent goes straight onto the sunshade, but it totally makes sense, cuz that thing is always dirty.

    Schuberth Modular (E1)- had a Shoei that saved my life, but I could not find what I thought I wanted in a Shoei. I had to replace two plastic parts for the Schuberth and paid a bit over $125 for both parts. The 5 year life will be up on the Schuberth in 2 years and i will look into parts before I buy the helmet. I will also go to a show of some sort so I can try on helmets when I buy again. When I put the peak on the helmet it locked much more securely than the one that I lost...I think. That is what I tell myself so I feel better about losing the first one. I got the pinlock and realized that my old one - which did not seem to work well was missing a gasket that was clearly on the new one. I guess the gasket on the old one came out long ago.

    I also just bought the same model Scorpion helmet for the flip up face bar, the sun shade, the face & head air inlets. I dont notice the weight probably because I used to wear heavier full face moto x helmets.
    I was shocked about how noisy this helmet is. It is worse when you drop down the face guard. So I usually leave the face guard up till about 40 mph. I found the hard way that ear protection is required at speeds over 45 and above 65 its terrible up to 115 mph.
    The dust on the sun lenses and inside of the clear main shield is a pain as both lenses must be cleaned often.

    Hi Amanda! Enjoyed your review! The quality of your videos is always great!
    My favorite helmet - Bell MX-9 Adventure MIPS - It's everything the EXO-AT950 isn't! It's light, completely thumb screws to disassemble, it flows a crapload of air, and fits full sized dirtbike goggles that the EXO-AT950 doesn't!
    I have pretty much relegated my AT950 to commuter/winter duty because it's warmer. Not a fan of the weight, low airflow, high noise, and (compared to dirtbike helmets) the small opening that doesn't fit dirtbike goggles. Wish I would have skipped the AT950.

      I wouldn't be able to let go of the Modular though! Plus I'm always cold so the air flow never really bothered me unless I was following Karl through gnarly stuff, which doesn't really happen anymore 😂
      You do a lot more technical stuff so that makes sense. The AT950 is more of a slab pounder with some light Forest Service roads sprinkled on top 🤣 apart from the loudness which really just enocuraged me to wear ear plugs which I needed to do anyway.

    Great review! Actually in the market for a new lid at the moment, however I'm one of those oval headed people and between my oval head, pudgy cheeks, and near Jay Lenoesque chin I find a lot of full face/modular buckets a little tight in the front. Hate it when I'm constantly touching the chin bar with my .....Well.....Chin, LOL. As for my FAVORITE helmet of all time? My old Bell Moto III that I had when I was a teenager. Super comfy, huge eye port, not the least bit restrictive of my vision, plenty of chin bar clearance, however, when I had that helmet I didn't have a driver's license yet so pretty much exclusively rode in the dirt. Upon turning 16, getting my endorsement, and buying my first street bike I quickly discovered that at anything approaching highway speed wearing my trusty bash hat was essentially the equivalent of attaching a parachute to my head. Definitely NOT a street helmet, LOL.
