  • Concerns are growing over Iran’s increasing uranium stockpiles, which US officials say could be converted to weapons grade uranium, suitable for a nuclear bomb, in mere days. This follows years of failed negotiations and inadequate monitoring, with Iran’s claims its enrichment is for peaceful or civilian purposes lacking credibility. Enrichment for the purposes of energy production is only required to 5% for conventional nuclear power plants, and just 20% for the advanced reactors under development. Iran’s 142kg of Uranium enriched to 60% is therefore not appropriate for power generation, and leaves it just a few steps short of being ready to make a nuclear weapon.
