They should have kept doing mask packs for as long as they could have milked it. These masks were not only good collectibles, but they were absolutely perfect for MoC characters. What better way to make your own Bionicle character and give him a mask that is unlike any of the ones worn by the heroes?
Those masks were good collectibles BECAUSE they were super useful. I wish they made metru matoran masks with silver marbling, or toa metru masks in different colours. Hordika wave would have to do without masks, but ignika wave would be back on track. More variants would make weird gummy masks and piraka spines more useful in mocs.
I think it also killed a lot of creativity because it made masks less "this is a mask that can be used for/by anyone" and "this is a specific character's mask"
I was a HUGE fan from the first Mata line to just after Metru Nui. Although I really like how much better the build styles and aesthetics got in later sets, they really lost some of the touches like these masks that made Bionicle so enjoyable. The emphasis on masks then was magical. And I liked the designs back then too. Spinning disk launchers, vehicles and ball arm cannon things are cool but there just was something charming about Mata and Nuva era Bionicle.
I really wish we could get some re-issues for some of the OG sets. As an adult wanting to share his childhood with his own kids, I couldn't ask for more.

@@SymbolsWriter I'm still malding about that. My friend would always beat me because his Kopaka could effortlessly reach my Pohatu's mask, but Pohatu's little swinger legs attached to his womanly hips couldn't do anything but kick Kopakunt's icy biomechanical balls.
Technically, there is a color of transparent brown, which Lego has. It first appeared in three of the original Star Wars sets in February of 1999, as the cockpit of a Snowspeeder (7130), an X-Wing (7140) and a Y-Wing (part of 7150). While it is still relatively common overall, this color didn't appear in Bionicle until around the midpoint of 2008. In addition to the mask polybags (8525 or 8530 depending on region), the Kanohi Pakari in Mata blue can be obtained from the Tarakava (8549), but none of the others can be obtained in their origin colors elsewhere.
Most of these were obtained from people getting rid of huge unsorted bins of lego, check offerup for unsorted lots and you'll definitely regain some of your childhood sets
Fun fact, the old transparent black is actually called transparent brown internally at lego, so there was actually a transparent brown not a transparent black one.
Man, I remember begging my mom for the limited edition vahki set that had both the Mask and Disc of Time. Really upset my siblings and i can't find the Mask of Time in our massive collection of Legos
we know that the toa got all 5 of their great masks but we also know that there was noble masks scattered. i have to wonder if all the toa got ALL the noble masks. i can definitely see tahu or lewa skimping out on some of the noble masks.
The only reason pohatu needs a mask for water breathing is so he can get his gold mask. The reason for this is because pohatu just sinks in water and does not like to go in it. But just in case he gets trapped in water its good to have the gold mask of all six powers. The orange kaukau belongs to ta koro in my opinion.
I swear if those krouts at lego gave me 10 minutes with a design and marketing team I'd be able to bring bionicle back to its former glory. They are still sitting on a gold mine I just hope the don't fuck it up in the future.
@@James.B.Russell I actually do. The plastic they use is slightly transparent. So that you can see the Bionicle eyes through it. I think I got with with some Bionicle McDonalds cards.
Iirc, legos internal library actually lists "trans-black/smoke" as transparent brown, meaning Onua's Kaukau is technically the brown one, but the orange still works. Besides, when would Pohatu use it-
You know i thought totally to give the mask variety all the mask to each toa gave different powers for some reason at one piont in kid years i somehow thought vakama mask was teliportaion for some reason even though i saw him go invisible

True
Don't forget that some rahi were controlled by Makuta by infected Kanohi. And the Toa had to knock them off to free them from his control.
When they stopped the unique and collectible masks gimmick, Bionicle lost some of its old identity
We should have had Metru mask packs, for Toa Metru and the Metru Matoran.
Most of lego tbh no mor egolden weapons or hands of time or masks
I think it also killed a lot of creativity because it made masks less "this is a mask that can be used for/by anyone" and "this is a specific character's mask"
Really clipped making MOCs
Actually crazy to me they’re reviving Bionicle in 2923
By that time it truly will be a legend
They'll be able to make people into toa then
We will be bionicles ourselves by then

In the time before time… the LEGO Group released Kanohi Mask Packs which eventually faded away and got replaced with ammunition.
Anyone else hold a mask today and just know it gives a bionicle real power? Like obviously its a toy, but doesnt their world is still feel real?
I just bought one because I’ve missed the feeling for too long but I know exactly what you mean.

Smoothest short loopback I've ever seen

Loved OG Makuta mask because it had 2 faces
How did I never know that trying to get the mask off was a part of the play with bionicle? Now I feel like I missed out.

If Lego ever decides to bring Bioncle back, they would also have to bring back the mask collecting, cause Bioncle wouldn't be the same without it.

I think the reason why the mask of water breathing is orange for pohatu is so it can match his eyes
Need to get the ref Hau, only have the golden one
