I love how Andy/Skrim are just the same person. There really is no way to tell where Andy stops and Skrim begins
Jornir complaining about Skrimm carrying a small "useless" pouch of gold coins that Skrimm actually needs in order to cast one of his spells. meanwhile Jornir has two enormous freaking mammoth tusks strapped on his back that he wont even allow Barnabos to use to prop up a smoke shack.
wdym they have great magic he can give hitpoints with them to others
Jornir's biggest character flaw is probably his arrogance. He thinks everyone around him is an idiot because he understands the land.
In reality, that gold has a lot of potential use. They know there is an entire kingdom of dwarven traiders in the northwest who obviously use gold, and have access to equipment from the mainland. They've traded with kobolds for powerful potions using gold. It may not be from the land, but it's still useful.
I love how everyone can so naturally and comically mimic each other's voices and gestures. That's just proof that you're all great friends!
Queenie and Skrimm’s pseudo-sibling relationship brings me so much joy. 😂
I say Jor, you say nir!
Poor Jornir getting motion sickness has my heart and soul. Dude has lived for hundreds of years just walking place to place and Skrimm decides to go the equivalent of the speed of light to the Firbolg. I imagine jornir being like a kitty in a crate in a car for the first time
“Who else is gonna pull it but you?” “Probably Barnabos.” This absolutely sent me.
Mikey did such a good impression of Taishen at 00:39:08. I had to double-check that Mace didn't turn up while I wasn't looking.
DUDE ME TOO
48:12 another good one. Got Mace’s inflection perfect 😂
I am fully convinced that Mikey can single handedly play every male character in this campaign, including the dm. I absolutely admire Richie giving priority to teishen in the absence of mace.
He has a pretty good Queenie impression as well!!
1:24:55 was great and I think Nikki is right: Andy is just Skrimm. It's why he portrays him SO well, even in the most dramatic, the most ridiculous, the most serious/intense, or the most mundane moments. There are some differences, but it's close enough to create a wonderful performance. I'm here for it, though; Skrimm is my favorite.
1:48:06 is another good example, lmao.
Setting aside their actual character ages, I imagine the group dynamics like this (how they act, from eldest to youngest): Barnabos, Queenie, Jornir, Taishen, Skrimm.
-Barnabos: Reckless abandon, but an incredibly fierce instinct to not only protect his comrades and the innocent and eliminate threats, but also to take younger ones under his wing and teach them useful skills or impart bits of wisdom. He also adheres VERY strictly to his own code of honor, understanding the consequences of allowing them to falter. He also has the stereotypical tendency of old men to ramble about his past when something triggers those memories.
-Queenie: Almost fearless, extremely capable at surviving in general, quite intelligent when it matters most (in combat or when the threat of danger is closest), and a fierce instinct to protect those she cares for even at the expense of her own needs or even her own life. She nurtures not only physically, but also emotionally even to the point where it's more instinctual than logical, like an elder sister looking after younger siblings. She is the first one to speak up when group conflict has passed a point of being tolerable, settling conflicts better than anyone else in the group, and is generally the most willing to course correct Barnabos when he's gone too far in words or actions.
-Jornir: The most perceptive when it comes to thinking ahead and deducing potential consequences (both positive and negative) to different courses of action, like someone who has the ability to learn from the mistakes of not only himself but also of other people, he's like the middle child. Watching the reckless bravery of the elder siblings on one side and the blissful ignorance of the younger siblings on the other side and fighting off constant headaches or otherwise ignoring everything and choosing to stay out of it. He cares about his friends, but knows when to save his energy ignoring their conflicts versus when it's worth it to actually speak up and share his thoughts. Every word is thought through before he speaks it and his mind is far more alert than what his calm exterior might suggest. He's essentially caught in the middle of most conflicts and serves as the voice of reason when two extremes are presented or when the group is about to be reckless because they're restless. Despite being the most distant and often looked to as the leader of the group to make most of the decisions about paths to take, he is also the biggest healer in the group despite Queenie having the most nurturing nature; he is very balanced.
-Taishen: The most innocent and precious, but has far better control over his emotions and offers more pieces of wisdom than Skrimm. He is also a peacekeeper in the group, doing his best to assist his friends and spread the inner peace he has achieved to them, but lacks the social experience to be able to successfully break up most conflicts or to know how to have his thoughts taken more seriously. He does not speak with confidence because he recognizes the wisdom in his other friends, knowing he was blessed with a sheltered life, but he does speak with sincerity. He cares immensely, but doesn't yet possess Queenie's ability to exude that aura of an older sibling.
-Skrimm: Being so dramatic and expressive displays the freedom he has with his emotions, less disciplined than the others in the group. Despite how paranoid he can be, and everything he's encountered in his life, he still finds it difficult to really learn his lesson. Driven more by his emotions and impulses than by logic, he finds it extremely difficult to find the balance between when it's time to be more selfless versus more selfish, when it's better to run versus when it's better to fight, and enjoys the luxury of not feeling compelled to exert a lot of effort to do actual work. He's also more intelligent than what he appears to be, preferring a goofy facade to distract himself from the horrors in his mind than to sit in reality long enough to acknowledge the helplessness he struggles with; it takes great danger to pull him out of this habit. These are all traits of the youngest sibling in a group family dynamic.
Wow, amazing psychological breakdown
Derek, not just a benevolent DM to his players, but also to us. Love your DMing style Derek
“The Relic Raid of Colddenar… They came like shadows from the night, attacking Jerry on his way home from night school. The stole our holiest relic, the bones of Saint Marr. One of them spoke our language, but not to parlay, or even explain what was happening, but to threaten us with death. We lost so many that day. That’s why you don’t have any memories of your mother, son, I’m so sorry.” - probably some Drakkar troll 10 years from now
1:59:23 - 1:59:37 Queenie and Skrimm are literally just like kids just calling for their parents cuz they saw smth lol
I have never seen so much dread and despair on Richie’s face as there was around 2:25:45 after the scream. Man went through all the stages of grief in a few seconds!
The fight in this episode is unbelievable. Derek is the master of wild fight mechanics that paint an amazing picture. He uses fight mechanics to tell a great story and it's jaw droppingly perfect.
I was so worried that the campaign was over, I just finished watching the other episodes yesterday, and didn’t see anymore, I’m so happy it’s still going
I’ve been putting some of my (many) characters into situations with all of yours, to flesh them out a bit more, you guys are all amazing
Me: DM, I’ve never played DND before, how should I best prepare for my first session?
DM: Oh, just TH-cam DND gameplay, and watch some people play.
Me: Searches ‘DND Gameplay’ on TH-cam, Legends of Avantris- Icebound ep 1. Is the first video, the algorithm blesses me with. One month later and now I’ve watched the whole campaign, and am completely invested. Thanks to Derek for creating such an incredible story and to all of you for your talent and humor!
3:45:23 I've seen a housefly, a shoe fly, I've seen a dragon fly
But I ain't ever seen 16 whales fly
I watched this on live twitch, the reveal of the trolls and how they regenerate was so terrifying, and how after the party jumped the gorge they all just stood there
10/10 would nightmare again
I found you guys a few weeks ago and so far have binged all of Witchlight and now Icebound and I need more! You guys, your storytelling, and your friendships are so inspiring. I've been in a rough place when it comes to confidence in myself creatively and you guys have lit a lil spark in me. Keep up the amazing work and take care of yourselves! ❤
Right?! I don’t even play dnd and I’m writing notes down in case I ever do.
Hope you find inspiration and creativity.
Favorite campaign ever since the captain broke his leg. LETS GO!!!
That moment sent chills through my whole body, and I froze up irl 'cause I was that captivated and invested in this story. 10/10
Why... Was that a defining moment 😂
@@neverg0nnag1vey0uup really it caught me off guard, the pencil snapping made me jump lol and then the dragon froze his head. It was just a great scene that set the tone
@@chrismaddox9884 OHHH that's so valid, these things really do stand out in this type of campaign!
Same here, i caught the boat later (no pun intended lol), and i remember this as the moment i felt o shit ITS ONN
The origin of "SISTERS FLY" and the Crack spell. 2:10:29. Too iconic not to timestamp
Skrimm is greedy, he is lazy, he may even be ignorant but he’s intelligent and he cares. How many times has he been the first or last in the fray of a fight? He’s been under a wendigo, he’s been on top of a giant brain, he races sucundus to protect the people of the house. He also bet his life, a death save roll on the chance to help his friends, and lost. And he would do it again. He’s grown as character as well, from completely and utterly avoiding his patron to summoning the dog and version of them to help everyone.
Everyone else is perfect, except maybe teishen can grow a little too, lose some innocence and know sometimes violence is the mercy for those who are pure evil.
At some point Andy began tracking the candles by blocks of time, 8-hour usages. I hope they don't forget that each candle represents *three* 8-hour uses...
They were also only given 12 candles that were then broken down into 36 8 hour uses they had 8 uses left not 8 candles
The description of the albino trolls body putting itself together is vivid and I love/hate it so much great job Derek P.S Andy if your reading this you do a great job with the youtube intro and the reading of the comments have a good new year also pre order the crooked moon folks
Those hand drawn tokens look absolutely amazing Derek! Come on Friday!
I've been catching up on Icebound and it's been so fun to see the character arcs and story arcs unfold, Derek your storytelling is phenomenal and everyone else you play your characters so well. I've grown so attached to this campaign and I can't wait to see what the future holds ❤
This mountain pass troll chase scene has the makings of a Rescuers-adjacent takeoff scene. Trolls alight with burning honey-webs, the party soaring through the tunnels with varying degrees of panic. Absolutely riveting
i already felt such a deep appreciation in my soul to everybody at this table, and then i hit the part at 3:52:05 where the 1am madness possessed Mikey's body and rocketed him (and briefly the others) into echoing the Tomorrow I'll youtube poop for a full minute. truly i have witnessed a reflection of the self. it's been an honour to share a brain cell
also please can we get more Shorts of the Icebound series in general, i'm dying trying to find ways to hook people on this one and there are so many excellent moments!
As soon as Derek said that changing gears took turns I knew we were in for a race chase. Really awesome everyone
What happens next, is up to you. Such gravitas.
Amazing Taishen voices.
I love that i just finished reading Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and you guys are talking about whales falling from the sky
As they fly over the chasm it all slows down and Ave Maria plays over the screaming and yelling
I absolutely love every single part of this campaign. Love you guys, you're the best, and you inspire me and my party to continue playing D&D
This is what got me into Legends of Avantris and I have loved every bit of it
Absolutely great idea for an encounter Derek!
We can’t kill Taishen off when he’s not even here. Save him!!!
Been watching you guys for about a year now and listening and perfectly understanding stuff, while either drawing, or doing yard work, or anything haha, help me focus weirdly enough. And I've been able to do so much simply because getting the opportunity to listen makes me want to do thing I got to do haha.
Man, Taishen was ON POINT on that fight!
Derek saying "I dont wanna spend time on it, I dont know its 10:10" meanwhile this episode goes on for another 2 and a half hours
Been watching root season 2 and this is such a shift, great battle scene and just great energy as always
1:01:15 🎶 secret tunnel secret tunnneeel🎶
Fun fact, Mantis shrimp punches are so powerful they cavitate the water and can actually produce tiny explosions underwater
I feel like people admire the tiny explosions but gloss over or don't realize that cavitation bubbles in water create light and heat as well not just the pressure wave.
and powerful enough to actually break the glass of a tank
onetwothreeDeath!
Love the idea of a Trollglodite!
This campaign has inspired me to get back into DMing. I LOVED how absolutely terrifying the entire eldritch dreamscape was and I recently got ahold of a system that would work perfectly for that - and with a bunch of newbie players, it would be glorious to put those beasts into Situations so they get more familiar with their characters and each other's characters and how to play them before I thrust them into the vibrant chaos of my homebrew world. I love all the campaigns from LOA that I've watched so far - Witchlight (gonna 100% Witchlight 41 my players), Uprooted, and now a full scale marathon of Icebound (crying at work be like) - and I am so excited to watch the rest of them too while I wait for Witchlight and Icebound to update. Y'all fucking rock!
1:35:53 it's official cannon that horses don't exist in advantris.
Seriously though, caribou and horses run way faster than 30mph, so it's weird that jornir is the most traumatized by this.
I have a theory that this arc will be called Despair, based on several clues throughout the campaign and the persisting horrors
Such a good episode, I'm so grateful to have so much amazing content from you lovely people in the dark time we're all having right around now, so thank you again 🙏
32:22 the pistol shrimp is the best shrimp on the planet
I thought for a moment I hadn't seen this episode then I got to the troll paste and realized I had. Apparently I just blocked it out because the subterranean trolls scare the hell out of me. So good job Derek, the episode was so creepy I repressed it 😂
I stayed after i saw the chuckles the clown gag
Best decision ever
2:06:25 Queenie "these are Jor bones?" LOL!
Queenie creating a napalm wall is insane lolol, but i'm here for it!
I've been watching this for the last couple weeks trying to catch up and here i am. I NEED MORE NOW!!!!!!!! (:
I am SO glad there's one more episode
When Andy said that he wanted to play an barbarian (2:53:00), and all the guys immediately chimed in about how fun it is, I realized that every other player except Nikki (spell check?) Had played a barbarian in one of the TH-cam available campaigns including Mace.
I look forward to the next new campaign wherein Andy lives out his barbarian dreams
NO WAY 🤩🤩🤩 YA BABY!!!! WOOOO
This episode is for all the lovers of JornirxTaishen there is so much play it’s awesome, it’s just them acting like a Married couple
1:19:52 Jornir and Taishen fight like a married couple
2:38:54 Taishen touches Jornir (TAKE MY BREATH AWAAAAAY)
(Random 1:48:17 *5 minutes later* “TUUUUUURN”)
Mikey is so good at playing everyone else's characters lmfao
Mickey: Rich: Andy: Nikkie:
currently listening to this this in 1.5 speed so that I can catch next episode live!!
Update: they had enough fun in their inro and cold open that I did make it in time!
Everytime they say "the valley of the setting sun" I think of the House of the Rising Sun
I have spent the last like 3-4 days Binge watching/listening like a podcast of the Icebound series. I may have gotten to it late, but somehow quickly caught up, and it is my favorite series, as well has the only series that has grasped my interest from the start so well!
I love Skrimm and Queenie, their personalities are wonderful and relatable. One hand Sarcastic dumbass, other hand cute and loveably friendly Mama bear, rabbit(that has to deal with Sarcasm and other companions bs)
rest in peace to the succulent chinese meal guy
Just started the episode and gonna give it some time. But if they don’t address that they are currently months worth of travel away from Daisy who was abandoned in the woods 42 days ago I’m going lose my mind
Yah I’m like ten minutes in and I already want to eat my hand because they haven’t said anything lol
It’s criminal that Mace wasn’t there to Rp Taishen getting violent dragged by the ship lol
dude when mikey said 'skrimm my friend, what is wrong' as taishen i legit thought mace showed up
Waiting for someone to start acting like Gene Wilder. "Is it raining? Is it snowing? Is a hurricane a-blowing..."
"Yes! The danger must be growing, For the rowers keep on rowing, And they're certainly not showing, Any signs that they are slowing!" AHHHHHHHHHHHHH
I love this Podcast so much
if Derek kills Daisy, we riot
Agreed. I refuse to be Witchlight 41'ed again
I’ve missed these characters
39:08 Golden Lotus?! What are you doing here!!!
44:33
1:19:59
( I know it's a Taishen impression, but I hear golden Lotus)
"I feel like this is my fault, but I don't want to take the blame." I love Skrimm so much 😂
Every now and then, I hear the red tenticle head from the mighty boosh in Mikey’s barnobos voice.
Lmao when Derek was breaking down the how many squares they were moving in a round I had flash backs of one of my players having a move speed of 225ft per round. 3e magic items can get busted quick
Barnabos yeeting the trolls off the sled 😂 love it
So I listen to these campaigns to fall asleep, kinda like a bedtime story right?
And, right as I'm about to drift off into slumber, the butthole witches segment happens.
I started laughing so hard I rewoke myself up 😂
I figured I'd be safe 'cause this isn't Witchlight, but nope!
An amazing session Derek very well done awesome mechanics.
All hail Big Bee's Hand!
They keep mentioning rabbits and wondering why they don't have dark vision. My experience with my rabbits is that they see better in daylight and are active most just after dawn and before dusk.
Fast and Furious: Drakaar Drift
For Darkvision Perception checks, consider implementing passive advantage/disadvantage rules of adding or subtracting 5 from a check instead of having players roll 2d20. Say if something is hiding in the shadows with a Stealth DC 15, player rolls an 18 Perception check, they wouldn't be able to see the entity with the -5 to the check, but they might still be able to hear it.
Me having just binged all the other episodes over the last few weeks: now I have to wait a month at a time like everyone else???? o_0
Indiana Barnabos finishest yeeting trolls, dusts himself off, "No ticket"
The Rasberry noises when you obliterate an enemy!!!! 😂😂😂😂😂
While they are figuring out how to turn the sled around muffled drinking songs can be heard from Queenie's hive.
My brain has been SCREAMING, WHERE. IS. DAISY.
SAME HERE! That was my first thought when they got back!!!
Derek: The tunnel alights!
Me: Oh my god is Skrimm Elsa?
Loving this campaign!!! Have you guys pondered a barnabos v Kremy cook off one shot? Could be fun 🤘🤣🤘
2:19:34 it meat crayoned
Queenie performs interprative dances to communicate with her bees...
I was just think Mace is gonna come back to find Taishen dead in the most wicked way
2:20:19 I Know What You Did Last Winter, Skrimm....
4 additional candles? or 4 additional 8 hour periods?
i think the candles had like 24 hours on each, just split into 8 hour parts to keep track of better, right?
either way, nice find there ^^
Dude my phone screen was off and I heard taishens voice and I thought that mace had shown up lmao.
That both hit.
Wasn't each candle 24 hours aka 3 beans per candle? Shouldn't there be 17 instead of 9?
Never color your beard Derek. Gotta love the two tone. 🥰
3:52:58 who's got the sauce 😅 it's giving me beezleberry vibes from once upon a witch light but I dont recall those lines😅
So if it's four candles wouldn't it be 12 candles because each candle is 24 hours or that's how it was when they first found them 1:53:17
Each candle is eight hours
Still very late, but...
The ONE EPISODE where Mace's character was the absolute rock star...and Mace wasn't here to play it. Such sadness...
That was the fastest 4 hours of my life, what the hell
