People keep saying New3DS does eye tracking. If you use it's stable 3D test mode and see it also work in dark, it is very clear the tech is not eye tracking but head tracking, which works thanks to smart assumptions with the front camera and IR light doing very simple tracking of the user

I got my PhD doing protein X-ray crystallography: basically determining how to build a 3D model of a protein that will fit experimental data. I often used 3D glasses when modeling, as it helped a TON with spatial reasoning. This display would be a killer app for that. I can easily see a protein science lab buying one or more of these.

But the usecase is also completely different. VR is best at fullbody thing as the image quality is not close to what Nvidia 3D vision offers. And then theres the ease of use, ability to be aware of sorroundings, low space requirements etc. Long story short. I do like VR but real life constraints killed it for me. Maybe blame the price of housing nowadays. Eventho i had both. I did allways prefere to watch movies with Nvidia 3D vision. VR will allways lack in quality in that department.

Or psvr2 + pc adapter. Otherwise there are newer higher resolution headsets like pimax crystal +faceplate / big screen beyond which use base station tracking, which works well.

Bruh i just want Nvidia 3D vision back. That shit just worked for most DirectX games I tried. And while it didn't pop out of the screen (the effect only added depth into the screen, kind of like looking out a window IRL), That's arguably a good thing since you'd never have that discomfort when the 3D effect is cut by the edge of the screen.

The Larger the Display... the further Objects can Pop out. This has been a big issue with 3D glasses... because most people were using small sized CRT monitors, and getting a very limited depth effect. It was still really cool... but it was nothing like an 3D movie, in a true Imax 3D Theatre. However... using a +32" display, and things can pop out... about 2.5ft to 3ft out of the screen. Even better, is a home theatre projector. I believe my buddy had made a 14ft wide sheet for his... and despite sitting about 14 ft away... the images seemed to come within arms reach, out of the screen... And that was only on a 720p projector. The movie looked and felt every bit as fantastic, as an actual Imax 3d experience...
He popped in the movie "Predator" which was converted into stereoscopic 3d... and WOW. I was blown away. I actually felt like I was standing in the Jungle with the actors. I was spending more time being amazed at the life-like leaves on the trees... than actually watching the actors themselves. I wish I had seen that in the Imax 3d theatre too... but I never remember hearing any advertisement about it. It was literally one of the best 3D movie experiences Id ever had, hands down. Even better than Avatar 3D... because it was actually real, rather than slightly cartoonish CGI.
Since displays are much cheaper for larger sizes... it should be trivial to make decent 3D Displays. The 3D tech, is also not a very costly addition, to add to a monitor. The masses of 3Ds systems, prove that. Of course... now with VR Glasses, there is less of a need for special 3D monitors. Still, the tech is still a valid, and desired option... for people whom want to watch films, and play games on a Monitor, rather than dealing with a full VR setup.
Ohh, and I almost forgot... that one of the other things that messed up 3D glasses uptake... was that the initial LCD displays at that time period, was would only go up to 60 hz. That would leave you would only 30hz per eye. Add in, that they were often slightly slow in image updating, due to persistence issues (and fake motion frame inserts, if turned on)... and you could get ghosting on such displays, even if you could hack software to display 3D on them. Newer LCD technology, was quite expensive at the time when Nvidia rolled out their new overly expensive 3D glasses. So even if you could afford both the glasses, and the correct monitor... that monitor would likely still have been around 25 inches or less.
Worse yet, was Nvidia's lack of solid support for stereoscopic 3d. Rather than accepting a slow and gradual user base expansion... they eventually stopped updating their drivers, and I believe discontinued the sales of the glasses (rather than reduce the cost of them, to a more reasonable price).
For most Game Dev's... Adding Stereoscopic 3D, should be pretty Trivial... since most 3d games, already exist in a 3d world, with actual 3d depth. The only things they may have to tweak, are menu depths, and other "2d effect" depth conversions. Today... every new PC game "should" be VR compatible... to keep allowing the VR base to grow. Also, all movies should be converted into Stereo3d, with an affordable price... so that VR glasses owners, can watch their favorite classics, in 3D. Why they never converted "ALIENS" ,to 3D, is a Travesty, IMO.

@LinusTechTips the reason you are seing the weirdness on the reflection on the Lego game is because they use screen space reflection and for some reason forgot to make sure that when they render double One on the top of the other, they somehow forgot to make sure that the SSR would run correctlyon each render instead of centered LOL! that's why you can see the character reflection all the way on the top (because that's the bottom renderer)

From what he described, I think the Lego example is just a fake post-process 3d (using depth info to move things around for each eye) (resulting in ghosting and incorrect SSR)
It'll have big visual issues unless it's actually rendered separately per eye, which makes it much more worse on performance to render each frame (since you're rendering _almost_ twice as much per frame), and requires more from the engine/developers to support in a performant manner

But also for the ability to work or view the 3D of a project when it's needed but then turn off the projection when you don't to simple use a normal monitor. The ease of getting in and out of a 3D type of project far surpasses getting a VR headset up and going each time too. I always wondered why they always just wanted to make 3D come "out of the screen" That jarring effect is what you get! I don't know if it is possible, but why don't they just tune it to always just display depth behind the screen? Like you're looking through an actual window, so it makes sense that the object is occluded by the borders of the monitor instead of just causing eye fatigue because your brain can't understand what just happened?

    • @Simon-tr9hv
      @Simon-tr9hv 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

It's not possible, while I'm not expert on th subject, I think the 3d effect is using the difference between your eye distance, layering 2 slightly offset image on top of each other, that means each eye is seeing it with angle and the focus ( focal) point is on the screen, think a triangle shape where the top tip is at the screen, and 2 other tips are your eyes, that's why 3d effect always seems "pop out".
With proper technology, like lot thicker screen and maybe multiple layers of display, maybe it can be act like what you are describing, but with current display technology it's not possible

@@Simon-tr9hv Its clearly possible, as most movies (at least to my eyes) did depth rather than pop-out effects. Despicable Me did the pop out and immediately gives me a blinding headache. I believe its something to do with where the two simulated viewpoints are. by moving them closer together or wider it changes how your brain interprets the distance of objects, so likely also needs slight tweaking of the strength depending on how much of your field of view the display is covering.
I have a LookingGlass Go holographic display and that also seems to be entirely depth, no popping out effect.

If it does work in portrait, if input lag isn't too bad, and if the pixel refresh rate can handle a fast pinball (perhaps an OLED version in the future?), then dedicated hobbyists wouldn't have any problem paying an extra couple of thousand for the 3D effect (people already spend upwards of $10K on their builds anyway, what's an extra grand or two?)

Over the past year I’ve delved into 3D gaming and it’s been amazing! I cannot stress how incredible it looks on a 4K passive 3D oled… when it works. Like Linus brought up, 3D is all about developer implementation. Today pretty much all 3D relies on the community to upkeep and even the “working” titles can be quite buggy. There has been a lot of new developments in 3D recently thanks to the growing VR industry and dedicated members of the community. Games like Horizon zero dawn and Spider-Man are playable in 3D right now. If you ever get a chance to try out 3D gaming you definitely should. Some of my favorites are Battlefront II and Rocket League.

Sponsor Feedback: Was in microcenter and purchased Seasonic Vertex PX 1200 based on warranty and image on box that showed individually sleeved cables. Only to get the project build together and find they are made of cheap rubber coating. Was disappointed to say the least. Especially since PSU was a premium price over other offerings. Even when looking at images online the rubber coating sneakily has the appearance of infividually sleeved cables.

I assume the problem with providing 3D support for existing games is things like screen-space reflections: the reflection rays that work for one eye's viewpoint would be incorrect for the other eye, since the reflection point would appear to be in a different location due to parallax. This could cause the "floating" reflections seen in Lego Star Wars.

While I agree that it's really cool to do this without glasses or anything, wouldn't it be easier to do, and more easily improved, by doing this with a virtual display in a VR headset? I don't have VR, so idk if they can already do it. To me it seems like a much easier and probably better solution to have a virtual display do this in VR. You don't need it to adjust with eye cameras, you could share the experience in a shared VR space, it would be way cheaper, it could scale sort of limitlessly, etc. Can VR headsets already do this? Like could I watch a 3D (not VR) video in 3D within a Meta Quest or whatever?

3D Blurays are slowly becoming a reality again. I have an Xbox 360 that can USE THIS. It'll be amazing to watch WMV-HD 3D movies. And maybe they'll even find a way to make the left and right sides only see one side just by standing on that side instead of glasses for multiplayer on the screen.

My favorite 3D monitor was made by iZ3D. It used 2 IPS panels stacked on top of one another where the top display was almost transparent. It used passive 3D glasses and made game so much more immersive like Gears of War where the cobwebs jumped out of the screen. The 2 big issues was no HDCP support and it wasn't 1080p. They were supposed to launch a 27" version that has HDCP support and was 1080p but they shut down before that. Also since it used 2 displays, your GPU needed at least 2 outputs. No SLI or Crossfire support either. Really loved that monitor. Also only ATI/AMD GPUs were supported out of the box and you had to buy the NVIDIA version of the iZ3D drivers. Really miss being able to use it in 3D. Also 2 people could experience 3D at the same time.

As a VR user, this tech has WAY more potential than VR. VR is a completely new medium with new games and software full of compromises, whereas glassless 3D is just a straight upgrade over standard screens. Do not confuse this with using clunky 3D-glasses with batteries. Wearable devices come with HUGE compromises, they are just not convenient, they get incompatible with headphones, glasses etc, a glassless 3D screen just works and has none of those problems.
It's only a matter of software support, and we got that going with upscalers, raytracing, variable refresh rate etc. Software tech-wise it's also very simple, there no need to account for different VR headsets, different FOV, warping for unique lenses, different controllers, you simply need to be able to render 2 point of views with an offset, that's all. It might be computationally expensive though, so it's more of a premium feature like raytracing. Except that unlike raytracing, depth perception is an actual advantage in some types of gameplay.

I researched lenticular 3D screens to see if they’d be effective in museums, especially for drawing in younger audiences. While they’re undeniably cool and offer a unique visual experience, our findings suggested they might not be a big enough attraction on their own to make people seek them out. Plus, the eye fatigue varies quite a bit between individuals and can actually be more intense than with a VR headset. It’s definitely a fun, memorable experience, but more of a novelty-great for a quick look, not really something you'd want for daily use at home.
