    My wife and I have been eyeing for an XK for several months and 2 weeks ago a 2009 XKR Portfolio Edition with less than 50k miles hit our nationwide radar search. I drove 500 miles to see her the next day and drove her home. Neither of us have stopped smiling about this car since. 😍

      I owned my 59 plate XKR for 7 years. It’s a wonderful car, a bit better on juice than mentioned, but not overly expensive over a year. Now own an XFR; same level of fun, better gearbox and a bit more practical.

  • @richjohno
    @richjohno 6 ปีที่แล้ว +234

    Loved this video, spot on. I miss my XKR but as a daily driver, the car had to go after a year. But if I'm honest, I think I made a mistake. Yes, the car has a tendency to want to kill you if you don't treat it with respect, 1 in 5 times filling up someone will compliment the car (which is great but you will always be noticed), for an older car you still worry where you park it. It costs a fortune to run. The car taught me that I wasn't the driver I thought I was and should consider advanced training. Or that the 0-60 was irrelevant as the car's power was in its ability at 80-???. It becomes part of your life, an attachment. Not all these points are negatives by any means quite the opposite, but I don't think I was expecting all these points when considering ownership. Nieve? Probably.(i certainly prepared for the fuel, insurance and tyres).
    But the car is so alive and every trip felt like an event. However, before all cars like this reside themselves to museums and pictures in classic car books. When I'm driving around in an electric car as everyone will be. At least I will be able to show my grandkids that grandad had a full-fat V8 that sounded and drove like at any minute it would pull off the road and eat a flock of sheep.

    • @HighPeakAutos
      @HighPeakAutos  6 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Richard Johnson It’s quite depressing that this type of car is a dying breed. When you’re driving it, it feels like a living breathing thing - it’s unlike anything else I’ve driven. I love it. Yes it’s expensive to own and run, but I find myself justifying it in my head. You do get attached to it. The low front spoiler makes me panic every time I approach a speed bump too. It’s quite sad because it feels like it’s an end of an era. I’m sure that if Jaguar release a new XK one day, it will be some sort of V6 turbo or a hybrid of some sort which just won’t do 😔

      @@HighPeakAutos Agreed, I think this is the time for every petrol head who is lucky enough to be able to afford this type of car and in a position to buy one, to take the chance. @Gaming Git mine are now 6 and 4. Before now I had them on Halfords basic seats (£25). The oldest had to cross his legs so was only viable for 30min trips or so.
      Now have them both on "trunki" fabric backed booster seats which gives a bit more room. They still love the Jag, but we also have a defender now which is quite some competition for the children's affection.

    I've had my 2008 XKR Portfolio coupe for 6 years now and I love it. It has the 420 hp supercharged engine which is just about the right amount of horsepower. It is not as intimidating as the newer 510 horsepower models. It handles quite well on spirited drives through the mountain passes of British Columbia and the wide open spaces of Nevada and Arizona. I use this car for extended road trips rather than a daily driver in the city. As these cars become less common, their classic styling will ensure that they will be highly collectable. They're not that expensive to maintain. They're hugely reliable and jaguar servicing is actualy cheaper than BMW charge for looking after a 3 series. It's cost my friend a great deal more to run his M135i than another friend has to keep his XKR on the road. The biggest cost by far are tyres and if you're only using it for limited mileage, this is a non issue. The XKR is not an expensive ownership proposition, and most people over 30 will be able to insure this quite readilly.

They are 2 different beasts and I would never touch a 911 design compared to the XK-R design (I feel like a bought a piece of artwork from Ian Callum). The other reason I bought this car is, I have 3 young children and my 5 &9 year olds fit in the backseats comfortably so they are semi-functional. Majority of your compliments were for the sound, for me coming from a n SL55 (which still there is no better sound even in newer 6.3 engines), its the design, the car is a piece of art. Thanks for the video, you need more side-way driving shots, there is hardly any on youtube.

    Owner of the 4.2l and agree with a lot of what you say - thoughts are:
    -32y/o and insurance is £280 a year (think that is a bargain)
    - Jag have a fixed price servicing on the XK which keeps costs down and let’s you know what you’re letting yourself in for- but a service is easy to do yourself
    - only things gone wrong with mine in 7 years is an abs sensor (thought to be lack of use) and an earthing nut for the front headlight - outside of wear and tear items, that’s a cost of £7.80 in 7yrs!
    Downsides:
    If not using daily, get a good battery conditioner (not charger)
    Never use the boot on long trips as if you need the spare wheel you will have to make a choice to leave the 20” wheel, your luggage or the boot floor/liner at the roadside.
    20” senta wheels bend if you blow on them
    Aluminium body work is prone to corrosion (not rust like steel)
    Underside rusts out quite quick so think of rust converters.
    Earlier 4.2 models were less well equipped in terms of media and had an 80’s aerial - but I tend to just listen to the burble from the back and grunt from the front
    Except for that, I enjoy every second of mine

    I've got an '07 XKR with 42k miles. Love this car. A couple of notes. Don't know about your year, but a little known battery tap is available just behind the left rear well under the fender. There is this little exterior nut that is insulated and connected to the Positive terminal so that you can power up the car to unlock and start with a dead battery. Check it out, you probably have one. Also, my '07 has this active exhaust system. It activates with hard acceleration or with the DS-Mode selected on the transmission selector. Essentially, it bypasses the full effect of the muffler system, producing a much more "cat-like" growl. I prefer the bypass mode, so I pulled the fuse. Check your owner's manual for the Active Exhaust fuse location

That is why I decided to buy a 2004 XK8 two years ago. It doesn't have the power of an XKR and the engine sounds very restrained as long as it is driven in the normal rpm range.

    Excellent, thoughtful review. A gorgeous car with an intangible something that nothing else on the road possesses. I had a XKR 5.0 for 4 years, sold it stupidly (after getting 2 speeding tickets on the same day...oops) and have missed it every day since. Prices have rocketed since they stopped making them but with Jaguar's current woes I doubt we'll be seeing a replacement anytime soon, if ever. I disagree they are expensive to run through - insurance was almost the same for my Mazda MX-5 (I'm 50's with only 2 speeding tickets since 1979!), servicing cost £450 a year, average 22mpg, and depreciation was stunningly low at £3.5k per year (between age 3 and 7) and the only thing that went wrong was when a stone punctured the air con radiator.

    • @HighPeakAutos
      @HighPeakAutos  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jeff Ward Thanks for your comments. It’s good to hear about your experience with an XKR. What’s surprising is how reliable they must be. 90% of the comments I’ve received have been about how reliable it is. Lots of people have commented about how cheap their insurance was too. I assumed it would be high because of the nature of the car, but obviously not. I love them, but sadly it does feel like it’s an end of an era for the XKR - especially with a V8. If they do bring it back one day, it will be some sort of hybrid 😔

It is the purity of the sound (no supercharger whine) and the smooth acceleration that in my view make the regular XR even feel even better. I have owned my white XKR, identical to this one, since 2018 and every year around this time I start thinking about taking her cover off, and pulling her out of the garage. One commenter noted that the XKR is almost a living thing and I cannot agree more. It becomes a part of you. I live in Maryland (United States), with copious deer and I find myself creeping along wooded areas, eyes peeled for one to jump out. I often tell people that if I hit one, it better run (fast) or die, because I am coming after it.
    Thank you for this excellent review. I do love this car and though it annually tries to end my life, I cannot conceive of any event that could make me turn it loose.

You'll be eating it next! :-) What would your mum say? But yeah seriously, honestly - Please get your driving position fixed and keep both hands on the wheel. You might just find you can control these powerful cars a LOT better. It really is the place to start with improving your technique. But I do, so despite the all of the above, you must be doing something right. Ok, could be Covid related boredom but, Well done.
      Oh yeah where were we, (in my troll cave) XKR's by the way are a bit of a well kept secret. Pricey, yes, but not crippling considering the original price Circa £80k. I had the pleasure, courtesy of Jag of taking an XKR up to an indicated 175 mph on the Gaydon test track up at Aston Martin during the financial crisis just before the new XJ was launched when sales were through the floor. The supposed 155 mph limiter only kicked in at that speed. XKR-S's are just too powerful for their own good and will kill you and your family and cousins. Very impressive but I still prefer my E39 M5 overall as a drivers car for continent crossing. Luckily it doesn't matter what anybody else thinks, we are all right. My 4.2 2008 drop top is lovely. I remember driving 4 hours to visit a friend with my knees hard up against the dash. Two young kits in the back. Half a dozen bags (lots of small ones is the way to go) ,the wife and to top it of a full size collapsible baby bed in the boot. Loved every minute. Its also relatively cheep to run. I would recommend against the bike rack i fitted once though. Besides looking insane with adult and kids bikes hanging from the back it dented the bumper (popped out after 3 days) . I am looking for a 5.0. Love it.

    This is great review. I bought the first of my 2 XKR's after 2 falling for the 911 hype twice and cancelling an order for the AM DB7. The Jaguar dealer told me 'you will like the look of the Aston, but want to drive the XKR' and he was spot on.
    I reluctantly sold my 2nd XKR moving into a Jaguar XJR, another classic, to find there were 4 of them in the car pack when dropping my children at school to then switch to a Range Rover.
    I persistently look on car websites for 2012 onwards XKR convertibles which he's right are superb and I'm sure they are the same price now as 2nd hand F-Types.

    I've had my 2008 XKR Portfolio coupe for 6 trouble free years now. I only drive it in the summer so I haven't put many kilometres on it, but I am absolutely thrilled with it. My car has the 420hp engine, and although it will still spin the tires unexpectedly, I find the car is quite manageable. It is absolutely stunning in celestial black (blue in the sunlight) with 20" Cremona wheels. My previous vehicle was a 2003 Mercedes CL500, and although I found a lot of similarities in the ownership experience, I much prefer the XKR. It might just come down to constant attention (admiration) the XKR gets. I expect I will retain the car for many years to come.

    My dad had a dark blue 2000 XK8 coupe with a special set of wheels. To this day it is my favorite car. We don't have it anymore, but I fondly remember my late teens taking that car for a drive near our house on some long, straight, but hilly roads where absolutely no one drove. It was right next to a pasture of cows, and on sunny spring/summer days I'd take it out on this one mile-long stretch of the road and just floor it back and forth, sticking my head out the window and yelling pure happiness as the smell of burning tires filled my nose. In a giddy panic I'd slow down when I noticed the end of the road coming up and the speedometer was in the triple digits, turn around at the road end, and do it all over again.
    God, I miss that car so much. Once I have the means I absolutely will have one again.

    Just about the most honest of reviews and like all the others I've watched. Warts and all assessment!! It will upset some people but I'd say it is the Britishness of the XK8 that suits us Brits. Not technically the best but fast enough and I think if a car stirs your blood like Jaguar always have for me then that's the one. I drive a tuned 2.5 V6 S Type and I just love it. A pal of mine has a V8 S Type R and is afraid to use it because it's a bit thirsty and is always asking me what mileage I get. I truly don't know and drive around in it in Sport mode virtually all the time and use it daily. Jaguar do have their detractors but I like what I like, don't like 'technical' superiority or car snobbishness, just the pleasure of driving what you like. Must say I'd love an XK though- wonder why there isn't a 4WD version....?

      Hi! I agree completely. I've had countless Jags, and I love them, even if they're not technically the best. Like you say, if you get enjoyment out of it, surely thats all that matters. An all wheel drive XK would be better actually. It would help put some of that colossal power down.

    Recently took one on a road trip round the South Island of NZ - best road trip ever!
    You're right the power and noise are completely addictive and you just constantly want to open it up to get that sensation. It's so much nicer to look at than an F-Type too imo. It really shrinks around you once you're used to it and you can get some confidence up, the only time I felt gun shy in it was on an evening run where we got caught in torrential rain with terrible visibility... definitely was conscious of how easy it would be to spin it in those conditions

    I've got a '07 XK, and '10 XKR. You have key locks under a removable cover on the door handle, not just the boot.
    Yes, the XKR wants to kill you! The XK is a softer and more supple ride while the R series tends to be more tight and jarring. You do not relax in an XKR when driving windy roads. The car will demand your attention with every road bump and twitch of your right foot.
    Fair warning.... For the 2010 to 2012 5.0l engine, an engineering design flaw in the timing chain tensioner system can cause catastrophic engine failure if not addressed as soon as it is noticed (rattling noise). Note: Jaguar redesigned these components in late 2012 to address the problem. Retrofitting the earlier motors with the proper parts will set you back a couple grand.

Cheers in anticipation snafu.

    Ever since the facelift update, I've fallen for the XK. It has the feminine lines in the body but the masculine roar under the bonnet.
    This may sound nerdy, but I loved it even more when I found one of these on Test Drive Unlimited 2, XK-R with British racing green exterior, tan leather interior, walnut trim and those ooh-so sweet aviator-propeller style rims for it. Hours up on hours I drove that thing.
    I got hyped about one when I seen one in person in almost the same configuration as I had the virtual machine.
    Seeing it really makes me want one, especially as it can be a very practical car for a single person that doesn't need to haul a lot but yet knows you have a decent boot to fill if you really need to.
    Plus winter drives are the greatest, find an empty parking lot, preferably without center lampposts and you can have hours of spinning, drifty fun.
    Thank you for sharing yours with us, please keep her safe, she may not be perfect, but she surely is a beauty!

    To me, this XK has always been the underdog to the Aston. Logic says you'd buy the Aston, but you'd walk to the Jag dealership and buy this instead. Despite some of its flaws, it's the car that you'd have. Even with the 510bhp, you wouldn't need to floor it all the time, enjoy the drive but it's nice to know when you want to overtake, you can do it with ease. I'd just be cruising around with a smile on my face
