I want to reiterate that this isn't meant to imply any of these directors are inadequate, just that everyone starts from somewhere. I know there's a ton I didn't cover, so feel free to list some other first feature flops down below! Oh, and as a horror fan, I actually don't hate the Alien 3 Assembly cut and even consider it a bit of a guilty pleasure.
Naah... Welles was directing for years before Kane. He was staging plays in school as a boy, later directing, writing and acting on radio and in theater for years. He was directing plays on Broadway at 22. His oldest surviving short is from 1933 - when he was 17. Now put that in context. The size of equipment, availability and cost of doing school films as a teenager back then would be akin to a school having an IMAX camera (and everything else) for kids to play with.
For Edgar Wright, between A Fistful of Fingers (1999) and Shaun of the Dead (2004) was a little TV series called Spaced (1999-2001) that displays his trademark editing style, so not so much a five year jump than less than 1.

Art is a lot like dark souls, it’s the act of enduring endless failure that gradually yields success
This is an absolutely perfect analogy!
I make the same comparison between Jiujitsu and Soulsborne.
...and then there's Citizen Kane

The perfect video for just this moment in my life actually. Well done and well edited!
Thank you! It's important to remember that everyone starts somewhere!
Ridley Scott made about 2000 ads before Blade Runner and Alien. Skills are not made overnight.
Oh absolutely. I didn't even go into how many directors slogged for years doing shorts, music videos, etc.

Solid video! Seems like a really high production value for such a small channel. Almost too good.
Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed it!
What’s the song you used in the beginning?
The one from the film clip is Sunshine of Your Love by Cream
Awesome video sir!
Thank you kindly!
Sidney Lumey???? Lumetttt (hard T). That's how I've always heard it.
I just had to double check. Why the hell have gone this long thinking it was pronounced like "Lumey?" Thanks for the correction!
