    I was born in '47 and grew up with a lot of those cars and early rock music around me. It's obvious to me now that a car is a lot like a woman in that it should at least look good to inspire a man to want to work and save his money to own it. After you do own it, of course, you could have a lot of mechanical problems, as with a woman. But what we've got today, generally could only inspire me to take a baseball bat to. And the music is no better.

    Back in the 1950's my Mother would show me old pictures. There was one picture that I loved more then all the others, it was a PIC of my Dad holding my older sister in front of his car when she was just a baby. She is 68 today. I didn't care about my Dad or sister in that picture, but that car fascinated me. I asked my Dad, what kind of car is this, he laughed and said, O'h that was my old dark green 1938 Pontiac. Gosh I loved the beauty of that car! Wouldn't that kind of love for a car come from a previous lifetime?

      These cars were not on the road in the '50s. If you had a '55 Chevy, it was probably a basic model and it probably needed washing. Rear view mirrors fell down when hit a bump, windows rattled. the were no seatbelts so your head hit a hard metal dash, the engines did not run smooth and had a tendency to stall at traffic lights, gears were 3 spd column shift and some would not go into 2nd, hand brakes would not hold a car well on an incline, seats were cheap and uncomfortable. windshields would shatter into sharp pieces, gas tanks would explode on rear impact, tires often got flats, there was no aircon, and heaters took forever to get the car warm. Cars were crap back then. At the time, of course, I was glad to just to be able to drive anything that would get me out of the house.

      +ardalla535 Agree! I remember 35 yrs. ago when an old 40's model came into a garage for repairs. When I saw it I said to the mechanic, "They don't make 'em like they used to." His response was, " Thank God for that!"

      Bull Cedar I totally agree with you. I bought my first car in August, 1958. It was a 1931 Buick, straight eight, then in 1962 I bought a 1959 Volkswagen which I just sold last year. I'm now 73 years old and I still love the old cars and the old music of the '50's and '60's.

    I like the old cars too, but the biggest Lemon i ever had was a 56 ford, 2 door hardtop, with the 292 Auto, a nice looking car, But the biggest piece of crap there ever was. When i would drive down a gravel road, the dust would come into the car so thick it would choke you. In 1969 my brother bought a new LTD, 4 door sedan, the same way, that cured us on Fords.

    Yep, this is the cars from the 50's. The teenagers back then didn't have brand new cars! They had to drive the jaloppies, as I did after I was grown too. They were easely 10 to 20 years old. As long as it could still roll on wheels, some didn't have all the pieces parts on them and the kids made the best of what they had, in some cases were very lucky to have "wheels". The title fits totally!!

    Chuck Berry I remember in the fall of 1987 someone told me that Chuck Berry just turned 60. I was 37, but a rock n Roller being 60 seemed so strange. That was almost 30 more years ago. Last Friday David Bowie moved on before he was even close to 70, today, Jim Frey the lead singer of The Eagles moved on at the age of 67. Let's hope that there is a rock n roll heaven and for you younger people, you can always brag after playing David Bowie or Eagles music, that THOSE BOOMERS, THAT IS WHERE YOU CAME FROM!

    I was born in 1950 and for the first 13 years of my life I never loved anything more then cars. I've often wondered if that strange love I had for cars had something to do with reincarnation, I.E. I loved cars in my previous life. Especially when I would see old movies from the 1930's and 40's on TV I was fascinated by them. I used to skip church and look through the window at the brand new 1960 Fords, then go to another part of town and look at the brand new Chevy's, same with Pontiacs and Buicks. Then that interest or deep love disappeared along about 1963. They gave me such a wonderful feeling. When we would have visitors, I would stand out in the drive way and admire everything about the car whether it was brand new or a old car built 15 years before I was born. Seeing many of those cars in the video reminded me of that strange love I had for cars only my first 13 years of life, since then, 1963 I haven't cared anything about cars. It makes me wonder about reincarnation.

      alan murr I too was born in 1950 and one of my earliest recollections of me and cars was the scrapbook that I kept of pictures of cars. I would scour the newspapers and magazines for pictures of cars and when the new model year cars would be introduced i was right there cutting them and pasting them. I remember trying to guess what the new ones would look like from the sillouetes they would show... or from the canvas draped cars on the transports when they would deliver them. Even before I was 9 I could look and a car and tell you make model and year! when i discovered I had a half brother at the age of 10 he used to show me off to his friends with my knowledge of cars! I can still do it with cars up to about the early 70's.. after that they didnt change them too much. to this day i can spend hours nosing around car museums. I HAD to go to the big auction in nebraska a couple of years ago. i was in old car heaven!!

      +grobenid , Wow! I loved your comment. It says from 5 months ago. I just now received it on Jan 15, 2016. Only on Google+, that red light in the top right hand corner of my email. Not from You Tube. I used to get a big thrill on very rare occasions while looking at a few of my parents magazines they would show a new 1960 Chevy or Ford or whatever in color. I would cut it out and save it as just looking at it gave me a thrill. We have a lot in common. To me as we moved into the mid 60's you couldn't tell a Ford from a Chevy anymore unless you looked at Chevy's bowtie logo, or see Ford written in a football shaped circle. Back in the 50's and 60's there were lots of movies on TV from the 30's and 40's before we even came into this world and they( the cars in the movies) fascinated the heck out of me, and still do today. It's as if I lived before 1950 and loved cars from the Model T ford to 1950. When we had visitors when I was a kid I was much more interested in their car out in the driveway. I would walk all around it looking and admiring the inside and outside, especially those rare whitewall tires. It didn't matter if it was a 15 year old chevy from 1946 (I'm remember such a car in 1961) or a brand new 1956 Pontiac station wagon. I remember my Uncle brought a brand new red and white Pontiac station wagon in 1956 when I was 6 and to this day that car, even tho a station wagon (my uncle had a wife and 4 kids), was the most beautiful car I ever seen. It was so pretty both the interior and exterior. I'm going to save this site as I lost your Google + comment because there is something about your comment that I can really identify with. I don't even know yet what song brought me to this site but I should find out in a couple of minutes. We kind of sound like kindred spirits.

    But most of those old cars were not in colors. Only black and dark green. Henry Ford thought all cars should be black much like baseball fans don't want to see a orange baseball. Henry Ford once said that you can have any color of car that you want AS LONG AS IT IS IN BLACK! He later gave in to a dark green.

    There are shows that feature stock restorations. Nobody shows up. The back to the 50's show has over 11,000 cars and over 100,000 spectators every year. Cars of the past were slow, handled poorly, inadequate brakes and tacky interiors. The styling was great. Our 1951 Ford pickup looks stock, but under the skin it has disc brakes, independent suspension, 400 horse, a 5 speed. It can run a road course, a drag strip or the freeway. Don't like modified cars? Get back to the nursing home.

    Now that's music to my ears! Maybe every generation feels this way, but it seems that those of us who grew up in the 1950s had the best of everything. Cars, music, television, clothes (poodle skirts and saddle shoes), dances (jitterbug) and drive-in theaters with cars that didn't have bucket seats. There are so many great memories of carefree times. (Did they really believe that getting under the desk at school would protect us from a nuclear blast?)

  • @wjksea
    @wjksea 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I get what you mean. I agree more with what you describe of your pick up. Looks stock but isn't under the skin. I see the old cars as works of art and history. Once altered in appearance exterior an interior, there is a distortion of all the things you described of the old cars causing a loss of historical perspective. As you point out though, in the United States it really is about the bottom line. If the people pay for a meth high, sell meth. You'll be in the nursing home or worse one day.

      Probably my favorite car of the 50s. When I was 16 my dad was going to help me pay for my first car. So I scanned the ads in the newspaper, found what seemed like the perfect car, a '56 Crown Victoria, 2-ddor with a moon roof. I dragged my dad out to look at it with me. OMG! It was gorgeous! Custom painted metal flake blue with duel chrome exhaust and a set of "baby moons" on the wheels. We took it for a test ride and drove it home to show my mom. While it was parked out in front of the house, the mother of the neighbor kids (also 16 and hoping to get a car) came down and told my dad, "You know what's going to happen if you get that car for your son? Our sons are gonna want us to get one that good for them! We'll never hear the end of it!" Well, they needn't have worried. My dad wouldn't let me get the car. Why? "Because it sounds like a goddam hot rod. Who knows what some kid has done to that engine. Might not be safe." LOL That was my dad. Mr. Old School Conservative. I ended up with a turquoise and white 55 ford 4-door from Canada, complete with the odd Canadian Ford "lightning bolt" side trim. But hey, it was 3-on-the-tree and I could lay rubber in 2nd! So there was that. Unfortunately, I was going too fast on a curve, hit a patch of gravel, the car flipped over twice and tumbled down a 15-foot embankment and that was the end of it. Totaled. Ah, the good ol' days.
