As an aside to the beginning of the movie, there are a few context clues as to why Sarah is so upset with her current life and a lot of interviews with some of the creators that opened up some lore years after the movie premiered. Apparently there are newspaper clippings that show a woman who is a prima ballerina that apparently absconds her marriage to be with her male co-lead whose blurry image looks suspiciously like Jarith. This is Sarah’s biological mother, who at a young age idolized her as almost a fairy tail-like princess state. Sarah wasn’t mature enough at a young age to realize it was her biological mothers act of leaving and abandonment that caused her father to go into a depressive state. She blamed him and then her stepmother for ruining what she had thought was a perfect fairy princess life. In addition to this movie being a coming of age story for Sarah, it was also a movie of accepting that she held a glamorized version of events in her head, and that her denial of what actually happened caused more issues. She needed a more mature point of view to disseminate her memories better. This also makes a few disturbing implications about Jariths character, as the goblin king in the last half of the movie seems to take a more predatory and seemingly romantic interest in Sarah, the man who represents who her mother left her family for. She may have been dealing with some kind of repressed sexual trauma.
I don't think it was sexual trauma as such, but she may have crushed on the guy her mum left for. That would have been scary and confusing as hell. As I understand it, Jareth is meant to be like a sexual awakening.
What?! 😂 I think you’re thinking WAY too deep into this. This movie represents going from childhood to adulthood. Everything that occurred were just manifestations of her own imagination.
This was my favorite movie as a kid. Back when you could rent VHS's at the grocery store, I had my parents rent this movie almost weekly. The guy behind the counter would even hold a copy for me. That Christmas, my parents bought me my own copy, back when a VHS tape was $80. If I had a son, his name would have been Jareth.
I was born in 84 and I don't ever remember VHS tapes costing $80 lol Was that a typo? Edit: I googled it and stand corrected. I'm floored that they were so expensive! To be fair, I was watching Betas until well into the 90s.
@@SomeGuy-cw9rw Heard they're doing a remake of Krull. I went and grabbed a copy of the Marvel comic version just in case it happens and it actually turns out good. Could make the book worth more. LoL
The coolest about this movie is the amount of hidden meanings throughout it. Labyrinth is a giant metaphor about the difficulty of growing up and leaving your childhood innocence behind.
The contact juggling, the tricks with the glass spheres, were all done by one Michael Moschen. Bowie had no skill in contact juggling. It's a skill that takes a lot of time and effort to master. So, they hired Moschen and he wound up having to crouch for hours in uncomfortable positions, with his arm under Bowie's, doing his contact juggling without being able to see what he was doing. But the effect worked. Moschen's an incredible talent.
I love that people are experiencing this film for the first time and enjoying it. So much fun world building and character ideas (imagine the brainstorming to come up with all those hand-faces), and several of the set pieces must have been really complicated to execute.
Lemme tell ya man, this is the only time I saw a thumbnail and started frothing at the mouth yelling "IF THEY DON'T LIKE THIS MOVIE I'M SETTING THE LAPTOP ON FIRE!!!" I love Labyrinth SO MUCH!!! And I miss Jim Henson every day
She is a phenomenal actress. A lot of her early movies are quite sophisticated for how old she was at the time. Etole (1989), Phenomena (1985), Some Girls (1988). One of my favourite movies of hers is Dark Water (2005).
I discovered Bowie through this movie at 13, and I fell in love. You can probably tell from my pfp how much I love this man. And yes, I love Labyrinth a lot more because he’s in it 🥰
I'm old enough to have watched this when it was first released and it was a favourite growing up. This movie is an amazing coming of age tale. Everything that Sarah faces is an embodiment of problems that everyone faces when growing up. Having to make hard decisions about which path to take, who to trust and not trust, the fear that everyone around you is wearing a mask and laughing at you from behind them, learning that sometimes you just need to ask the right question or get permission, the need to let go of childhood things so they don't weigh you down throughout your life, even the Firey's and the "Fire dance" can be seen as an allegory for drug use. The reason why this movie has so much appeal is that we can all relate to it despite not knowing what we're relating to. Amazing masterpiece.
"The Dark Crystal" movie (1982) is a masterpiece. For another David Bowie film you may watch "The Hunger" (1983, Tony Scott, Catherine Deneuve, Susan Sarandon).
God no the dark crystal freaks me the fuck out, when my dad show me that movie when I was a kid I was frightened by the sketcis and what they did, I'm 30 now and still freak out.
I love this film, the puppetry, the music and costumes, and David Bowie was perfect as the Goblin King! Would live to see you guys do Dark Crystal too! I was so disappointed when the tv version was cancelled! 😢
I wasn’t sure what you guys would think of this one but I’m really glad you liked it 💜 There’s a great video of the grown up Toby (who became a puppeteer and filmmaker himself) on the set of another movie where he and the puppets recreate Magic Dance 😊
This is one of my favorites as well. I recently found out there is a board game based on it which I'm hoping to pick up. It has figurines that look like the characters.
In the original script Sarah was supposed to be 18, but Jennifer Connelly gave such a great audition they decided to make Sarah younger. That being said, there was supposed to be a kiss scene between Sarah and Jareth during the ballroom scene that they intended to keep in. David Bowie told them after finding out "Absolutely not! She's 15 that's completely inappropriate!"
In the novelization there's a line "Too old to turn, too young to keep" meaning Sarah was too old to turn into goblin, but she wasn't old enough/didn't understand the implications of what Jareth was offering.
TBH I think the scene is stronger without a kiss, reflects Sarah's more innocent fairytale perception more. Also that it echos how most adaptations of Cinderella, which this scene seems inspired from, don't have them kiss either before she runs away.
An absolute classic. And David Bowie is phenomenal in it! And some of the best work I think Jim Henson ever did. This and The Dark Crystal are beyond amazing films.
"As the World Falls Down" remains my favourite romantic song. David Bowie was such a gifted and weird artist, and there will never be another like him. Off topic, but I've read a story about how David Bowie was really involved in esoteric thought and magic. In her biography, ex wife Angie Bowie relates how they moved into a house a few doors down from the infamous Manson murder house. Upon moving in they found the previous owners had drawn a pentagram on the floor of one of the house's rooms. David Bowie was in the height of drug excess at this time, and felt that malevolent forces were conspiring to destroy his sanity and life. He claimed to have seen the devil rise out of their indoor pool. Bowie insisted that they perform an exorcism and had a friend and "witch to the stars" come perform the ritual at their home. Angie claims, all present witnessed the water begin to boil violently. They fled the pool side, and after a few hours, Angie returned to the pool, despite David's warnings to stay away. She claims in the pool was a stain shaped like some demonic entity of the underworld. The couple moved out of the home quickly after the incident and Angie Bowie states that over the years the stain remains, despite decades of attempts to paint over it. While some may attribute such events to drug fuelled paranoia, there is a school of thought that drugs, alcohol and other negative behaviours open yourselves to what are called "attachments" or evil spirits (ever wonder why Alcohol is called "spirits"?). Or maybe it's just a cool story, who knows.
This entire movie is one big fever dream. A friend of mine and I referenced this movie all through high school because we watched it all the time as kids. 80s kid, here. Our childhood movies were just different.
My elementary school loved this movie. At least once a year we'd get to watch this movie at school. Apparently every class in the school must have been taking turns watching it. Until recently I didn't realize how new this movie must have been when the school bought the tape.
This movie was my introduction to David Bowie. You MUST check out his music, he's musical royalty, and has a huge range. Such an amazing performer. RIP Jareth! I recommend the album "Changes" to start off with, it's some of his biggest hits. And of course, there IS a Labyrinth soundtrack! This movie and Clue were the ones I watched the most, over and over when I was about 13-14. But as an adult, and having read the book Labyrinth (a book made up from the screenplay, very hard to find and goes for a pretty penny) and knowing that Sarah was about 16, it hits very differently. I still love it, but there's a hint of cringe in there too.💙
I am a huge fan of this movie. I have literally seen it so many times, on most practical devices, I have literally lost count (well over 100x). I was one of the people who saw it when it first came out at the movies, then on TV when they played it, then on VHS, DVD, MP4. As a kid, I had a crush on Jennifer Connelly. But I also lived the imagination (the Helping Hands, the Relativity Within You scene,...), the way her real world environment was placed into the fantasy Labyrinth, there are so many in film Easter Eggs, the humour (the Goblin City battle, those Goblins attacking Ludo, the talking rocks, the Door Knockers, the Worm, Sir Didymus [who reminds me of Basil Brush]). There's even seven places where David Bowie's face is hidden in the maze, one quite obviously, just before he gives the peach to Hoggle. There's just something special about this movie, that every time I see it, there's something new I see each time, it is just so full of fun, imagination and a lot of surreal metaphors.
Honest: that "woo! woo! woo!" that the bird hat makes when the old man sees Sarah and comments on her - as an adult one day that started being the sound that went off in my head on the first time I see someone I find madly attractive. Lots of folks are attractive.... once in a rare while I'll see/meet someone and that *literally* get heard in my head. I've no f-ing idea when or how that started, but it was in just recent years and out of nowhere.
This movie is literally another staple in my childhood (thanks mom for making me watch all the movies you liked) and I'm so glad yall r watching it ^_^
There was a ton or work with the puppets and puppeeering. There were 2 puppeteers inside Ludos body to get him to walk and move and another to control the face and another for the voice. Hoggle was the most intricate. There was the person in the suit. Then there were 3 different puppeteers needed just to control and sync up the 28 motors in his face and Brian Henson, Jim Hensons son did the voice. They had to rehearse for weeks to get everything synced up before filming any takes. The scene with the fire gang (the things that came apart) was probably one of the first attempts at "green screen" before there was green screen. The way they had to move and come appart, the puppeteers had to be on the set. They couldnt be under it so the had them all dressed head to toe in black velevet material and the whole set was covered in it too so they could then remove them from it and put in the scenery.
Wow, I can't believe after all the times I've watched this over the decades. I never made the fruit/Snow White connection before! Nicely done! And if you look at the beginning, in her bedroom, you'll see toys of the creatures that she meets. For example, the "red goblin" you mentioned looks like the dancing firebirds.💙
Since you've entered the 80's fantasy era, you MUST watch 'The Dark Crystal' & 'Neverending Story'. Just like 'Labyrinth', these moves are LEGENDARY!!!
Kinda disappointed you didn't leave in the bird/hat saying, "It's so stimulating being your hat;" would've loved to see your reactions! He was always my favorite & he wasn't even a main character. As for the Goblin King wanting the baby: we find out in the special features making of footage that pretty much every goblin around him was a baby that was taken from a sibling left with them who was fed up; David Bowie also lets us know that they have a tendency to take the babies without his permission. And it might seem at first that Toby would be in a better place if Sarah was to lose to Jareth, but what you have to think is if he was to become a goblin, he'd essentially be another goblin slave in the King's employ, so no; he definitely needs to go back home with his sister. And I always loved the ballroom scene; it was always my favorite. I always loved Sarah's dress in it (she looked to me like a live-action Disney princess). Also would've loved to get your reactions to the battle scene, especially Sir Didymus hitting his head & falling off of Ambrosius. And if the dude in the baseball cap still hasn't seen The Dark Crystal, it's available for free at the moment right here on TH-cam.
My husband proposed to me with Jareth's proposal to Sarah. "Let me rule you and you can have EVERYTHING that you want. Just fear me, love me, do as I say and I will be your slave. I said yes. Been married 10 yeara this past halloween and he has treated.me like his QUEEN every day since he proposed.
It makes me so happy that y’all enjoyed this movie! 🥹 This film was one the formative movies that made up my childhood. The other one: The Last Unicorn. All star cast and not what you expect it to be.
Time to overshare on the internet! I first watched this with my sister. I was like 3 and her 18. After the movie was over, I went and balled up a bunch of socks, stuck the down my pants and went and presented myself to her and went "Look! I'm David Bowie!" She died right then. ☠🤣 The only Bowie music I like is from this film. As an adult, I adopted a 10-year-old pug and named him Ludo. He was the bestest boy. 💜

David Bowie went to Jim Henson and wanted to be in a movie by him so they wrote this script with him in mind. David did some movies yes but he was much more known for his music.
Jim Henson himself said that the ballroom scene was Sarah experiencing an adult world, something that she was not ready for just yet
Sexual trauma? What a stretch!😂😂😂😂
Not really@@sexysadie2901
This was my favorite movie as a kid. Back when you could rent VHS's at the grocery store, I had my parents rent this movie almost weekly. The guy behind the counter would even hold a copy for me. That Christmas, my parents bought me my own copy, back when a VHS tape was $80. If I had a son, his name would have been Jareth.
I was born in 84 and I don't ever remember VHS tapes costing $80 lol Was that a typo?
Edit: I googled it and stand corrected. I'm floored that they were so expensive! To be fair, I was watching Betas until well into the 90s.
No, it is not a typo. This is when VHS tapes were first became available to the public.
I liked Krull better than Labyrinth.
We rented from the pharmacy 😂
MM won a McArthur Genius Grant for his juggling work.
There is some awesome behind the scenes of it!
Me and my cousin were obsessed with the worm. We would always say "come inside, have a nice cup of tea. Meet the Mrs!" lmaooo
I love that people are experiencing this film for the first time and enjoying it. So much fun world building and character ideas (imagine the brainstorming to come up with all those hand-faces), and several of the set pieces must have been really complicated to execute.
I love how impressed they were with the hands and gave it the appreciation it deserves.💖
Ngl I kind of wanna make a soundbite of you screaming *"IT'S GOBLIN TIME!"* and use it in day to day life 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Lemme tell ya man, this is the only time I saw a thumbnail and started frothing at the mouth yelling "IF THEY DON'T LIKE THIS MOVIE I'M SETTING THE LAPTOP ON FIRE!!!" I love Labyrinth SO MUCH!!! And I miss Jim Henson every day
Saw this at theaters in 1986. I've always liked that little worm guy. He's so sweet and adorable!
“Go long you fuzzy bastards” is going to be my go-to thing for the Fierys. They’ve been my trauma since childhood.
I watched this movie in first grade, and it has been a core memory for me ever since. I love the concept of faeries and labyrinths and masquerades.
"Tripping on peaches and bubbles" 😂 dude 😎
The looks on your faces as the Fire Gang sang is probably the best thing I have ever seen on your channel. :D
The fire creatures creeper me out as a kid
Jennifer connelly is phenomenal. Hard to believe she went from this movie to "requiem for a dream '
She is a phenomenal actress. A lot of her early movies are quite sophisticated for how old she was at the time. Etole (1989), Phenomena (1985), Some Girls (1988). One of my favourite movies of hers is Dark Water (2005).
@@darrenbent7601 further bit of trivia, "Phenomena (1985)" was the basis for the SNES game, "Clock Tower."
@@MichaelSmith-zo3tf I haven't heard of that game. I'll have to find more about it.
@@darrenbent7601Its a very... odd game. Not bad, but very strange.
I discovered Bowie through this movie at 13, and I fell in love. You can probably tell from my pfp how much I love this man. And yes, I love Labyrinth a lot more because he’s in it 🥰
I think when Sarah ate the peach. It was Jereth's way of trying to make her forget about her little brother.
Not to mention, Jareth representing sexual awakening and also the people you may meet that make you feel things but are not good for you.
I wasn’t sure what you guys would think of this one but I’m really glad you liked it 💜
There’s a great video of the grown up Toby (who became a puppeteer and filmmaker himself) on the set of another movie where he and the puppets recreate Magic Dance 😊
This is the absolute most amazing updated Where Are They Now I've ever heard, oh my god. Thank you for sharing that tidbit!!!
This is my favorite movie of all time, so glad you watched this masterpiece.

5:54 Sarah's A Slave Of Her Own Jealousy.
12:00 "never trust a worm" I'm dead. Words to live by!
RIP Bowie!!! ❤
Reason 815 why growing up in the 80's was better.
I watched this movie so many times as a kid, i still know every single sound throughout it. Glad y'all liked Ludo.
Ludo is a reference to the book Where the Wild Things Are, which was also in her room
I’m almost certain you’ve heard some David Bowie songs but you just did’t know it.
This movie is iconic, love it!
That's what happened to me. Starman
You're both so aggressive 😂😂😂 I'm on board with the goblin kicking, but don't you be threatening my worm! 😤
I was already grown up when this came out. David Bowie influenced my makeup style for about 3 years as the goblin king.
This entire movie is one big fever dream. A friend of mine and I referenced this movie all through high school because we watched it all the time as kids. 80s kid, here. Our childhood movies were just different.
the movie that awakened the woman in every girl thanks to David Bowie. still grateful my theater arts teacher chose to play the movie for us
My elementary school loved this movie. At least once a year we'd get to watch this movie at school. Apparently every class in the school must have been taking turns watching it. Until recently I didn't realize how new this movie must have been when the school bought the tape.
Even as an adult who's watched this movie so many times growing up, those goblins still freak me out to this day.
The goblins?! I was terrified of the fireys! 😂
@@FreeTheTrolls Same here, they're freaky little creatures. Modulok from Masters of the Universe comes to mind when I think of them.

34:10 --- The baby from this film... Toby Froud.. worked on the TV show of The Dark Crystal....
My grandpa had a Sir Dydimus plush toy, called him One-Eared Jack. Lol
This movie is literally another staple in my childhood (thanks mom for making me watch all the movies you liked) and I'm so glad yall r watching it ^_^
"Goblins shouldn't sing!"
Just wait until you see the Wild Gang.
One of my favourite movies ever! It’s so full of charm and fun.
Every time I think of or hear the name Sarah, in my head, it's in Ludo's voice.
One of my favorites when I was little❤
Kinda disappointed you didn't leave in the bird/hat saying, "It's so stimulating being your hat;" would've loved to see your reactions!
"As long as no one rips off their own head we're good."
When I was a kid and we went to rent movies, I would always want to rent this movie.
Also! I think Ludo was based on where the wild things are. They gave a glimpse of the book
Well, if a divorce ever comes up... You know what line has to be spoken....
It makes me so happy that y’all enjoyed this movie! 🥹 This film was one the formative movies that made up my childhood. The other one: The Last Unicorn. All star cast and not what you expect it to be.
I saw it in the cinema when it was released and have been obsessed with it ever since
“Toby?”. In that moment she knew she f**ked up.
Just waiting until Curtis says, "Subscribers friends...." In Ludo's voice...
Time to overshare on the internet!
I first watched this with my sister. I was like 3 and her 18. After the movie was over, I went and balled up a bunch of socks, stuck the down my pants and went and presented myself to her and went "Look! I'm David Bowie!" She died right then. ☠🤣
The only Bowie music I like is from this film.
As an adult, I adopted a 10-year-old pug and named him Ludo. He was the bestest boy. 💜
I listen to this soundtrack very often! Bowie did all the songs and I love Bowie. IMO these are some of his best. ❤

The last remaining screen used Hoggle animatronic (puppet) is on display at a store named Unclaimed Baggage (they purchase unclaimed luggage in bulk, and it happened to be included) in Scottsboro, Alabama. I live in the town of Fyffe (Go Red Devils! My alma mater just won another high school football state championship about 10 minutes ago 👺) which is located 25-ish miles away. When I first say it 20+ years ago I tried to buy it from the owner; he didn't even consider the $2,500 I offered lol
I want to suggest the movie The Flight of the Navigator. My boys watched it, Labyrinth and many of the movies listed over and over. We bought all the vhs tapes for them since they watched them so often. My grandkids now watch these movies...timeless. Flight of the Navigator is never reacted to and I know it was really well liked. I also want to suggest August Rush starring Freddie Highmore...love it!
David Bowie went to Jim Henson and wanted to be in a movie by him so they wrote this script with him in mind. David did some movies yes but he was much more known for his music. There is this song called Under Pressure with him and Freddie Mercury from Queen. You need to hear the studio version of that one, not live. You will really enjoy his other stuff as well.
So so happy you watched this. All the fun. Thanks.
Also-David Bowie wrote songs just for the movie.
