While I was watching this and thinking...”Hey, I’m going to put myself out there”. Suddenly, I got a text from a friend who bought the only painting I ever sold. About 2 years ago. She said she’d like me to come over Monday and look at a space where she’d like one of my flower paintings. Wow! I’ve watched several of your TH-cam videos and I’ve gotten so much good information. Your whole presentation is like food for a starving person.. Thank you!
Hi there Charlotte 💜. I’m just jumping in here 👋 I don’t know how old you are but if you’re artistically talented please do your thing!!! I say that for a couple of reasons; I may be wrong but it seems like you said ‘two years ago’ and your comment here was 6 months ago, so I am curious how you’re doing since. Your comment sort of sounds like that one painting was ‘the’ painting that sold. And I’m thinking if you have talent and had sold even a single one you can make more than one and sell them for a lot. How gratifying 🎨 Also I wonder if you didn’t have great passion for this why would you comment and why tell the story? I think it’s the same for me, as well as most true artists.. art is in your soul and it will never leave. We see the world a little differently and we need to illustrate our vision. Like I said, I don’t know you or your story and I speak with total & complete kindest & respect towards you, which brings me to my last point.. Do you- your paintings are part of what is in you! and make a way to fit it in ..for yourself, because things can happen that make it impossible. We age or disabling things occur (for me it was major spinal diseases & surgeries) and our abilities or energies lessen. Then thinking of putting our pieces in a show become a dream that won’t ever be. I’m 55 yrs old on disability now. I paint cool abstract art every single day but the idea of pushing myself to load up a truck/van & go to a show is overwhelming. How excited would you be to get accepted into a show. Or to win .. or get a mention. Or simply to be critiqued & take away a valuable lesson! From one artist to another-> make things happen just because YOU CAN!! Happy Painting ✌️✌️✌️
I have taken drawing classes, but just never felt like I was creative enough and quit. I am 63 and finally became confident enough to actually start painting. Six months ago, I started taking a painting class. I am trying to loosen up and just enjoy learning to paint. I do love painting and finally realized that is all that is important! Your videos are so inspiring and make me want to paint better!! Your art is spectacular!! The way you teach and inspire others in art is such an admirable way to live! Thank you so much! I am going to keep at it and enter a show as you suggest.
Your art world has just begun; with time to explore! I've talked to Stefan - he has incredible insight ànd covers more subjects than anyone I know! I'm 84 years old now and the descoverys in art just keep coming! Might add that I'm self taught, learned by observing other people's art works. Currently working in "3-D" and depth perception! Amazing things keep happening! Never learned to sell , as I paint in oils for my own challenges! Have been lucky to have many awards! Now buried in oil paintings! May have to start selling, as I need more room!
Hi Stephen. I majored in Art in H.S., wanted to be an artist, couldn't afford a fancy Art school and was discouraged by my Mother. So I became a Nurse, and a good one at that. Now that I'm retired, and settled into my new home, I'm unpacking all of my Art supplies and am going to start fooling around to find my niche. I'm really starting to get excited about it as I just started watching videos of people creating Art with acrylics ( one of my favorite mediums, the other two being watercolor and clay) and I know I can do it again and have a lot of fun. I stumbled across your videos and realized it never occurred to me to think about selling my Art at this stage in my life. Your lectures inspire me and I feel like a kid again with a second chance at life, and hope. I'm looking forward to watching every one of your videos and feel like I've found my guide. Oh happy day! Thank you so much Stefan for sharing your knowledge and encouragement! You came into my life at just the right time. I think it's fate.
My daughter gave me Bob Ross videos and supplies for my birthday in 2019. She knew I liked art and taking pictures. She said I believe in you mom. I can't seem to stop learning and painting and draw some too. I screw up plenty but keep learning. You have a lot to share. Thanks Stefan !
I don’t struggle with indifference, I struggle with praise. It makes me feel embarrassed and frightened of jealousy. I am learning tho. Stuff’em. This is what I do. I have a supportive tutor and now I have your videos too as well as three pictures in our class exhibition held in a professional gallery. Even then I nearly didnt enter them. My tutor took charge and pulled me part way out of the shadows. He also deals with negative group dynamics. And now I am trying to take on board what you are saying about entering exhibitions in order to stay out of the shadows, Your videos are great. Thank you.
Absolutely agree with your lecture. You can be the best artist and have the best skills. If you don't market your self, you get nowhere. I believe marketing is just as important as painting the artwork itself.
I actually threw all my paintings in the garbage. I was selling at subject related expos before the birth of my 2 children, but now trying to find the time again. It's easy to feel inconsequential. Thanks for the advice!
Its true for me that I always was passionate of art , and I have been looking at lots of art and that I have always been drawing and painting and decided to exhibit to be sharing my art - and I think I have learned a lot from participating in local and international art shows but the deep hope and motivation for me is that my art make the soul and heart of somebody sing.
Just entered The New English Art Club with a portrait in watercolour and then The Society of Women Artists with an equine watercolour. Feels good! Thanks for the impetus Stefan.
You are right that preparing for an art show forces you to really improve your work. But painting a commissioned portrait is even more rigorous! especially if the person you are painting is particular about the way that they look.
Along with that, I read somewhere that portrait artists of many years ago would only paint their commission subject (model) in a very attractive way, flattering them. That is how and why they could make money.
Well said, you get your whip out to your student's, I always say (fear stops us going for word) make them sweat!! I did it and I sold, yeaa TFS Mairead in Ireland
Hi Stefan. I have just recently started to watch your videos and I've already learned so much. I have a request though. Could you include the homework assignments to the videos for us who live on the other side of the world and could never attend your classes? Also I find it interesting whenever you show the works of your students. I have taken you as my "art encourager". I'm a contemporary artist and I mostly work in my own little studio and whenever I feel like I need some inspiration I watch one of your videos to get me going again! So thank you a lot for your work! I really appreciate it.
Some don't like the idea of shows including me. I'm the sort of person that gets discouraged by being in a spotlight, it's quite odd. But I paint for myself unless someone wants to buy one from me. But I am not bothered if nobody never seen my work, for me my art is more for me feeling well in my mind about my work. I know it's the wrong way if I want to make a living out of it, but I find it stressful trying to make it happen.
Great information. My brother he is a professionall artist but never can affort a gallery he is a 78 years old now after so many years desapointing start to painting again he can do any style the painting can do surrealist cubist classical fine art can do any but he no have any luck every one want to pay very little then now he just want to show his work before he die I want to help him but the galleries they want so much money is impossible to do any exhibition.
I paint pictures that are reflective spiritually and emotionally and a few have sold, over the years but my husband wants me to paint summat that will go with our settee! All I can say is pearl before swine much as I love him. Be true to yourself.
Your class is so amazing. Thank u so much. Feel really blessed to watch this. The first thing I just did right now, in the morning is to watch this, and I feel so much connected to what I want to do. And, yes, I just googled 'call for artists', which I would never have, if not for this class. I may or may not enter an art show [i wish i did enter], but this will surely expand the horizon and will take me to a lot of new different things. Thank you so much. Have a great day! :)
Stefan! I love to paint. It's been alongggg time since I did it. I would love to get back into my art side. Looking at your videos for the first time and I'm learning so much. You really have to watch your back. I will be watching more of your videos. It's giving me motivation to do my other hobby. There's always pros and cons. Thanks! Stefan.
Ive received scholarship and gotten into finals of shows - no one tells you this... but it gets really expensive. In no way are you selling more, etc.. but you are paying not only to enter the contests but to ship them. You might even go attend prize openings as well. ... all costly. I don't know that there's more artists or painters now - or if it's just that not many people are buying paintings.Maybe combination of both. I donno what the solution is... but I figure just paint the best I can for now and hang on.
I discovered your videos and WOW!!! I am so excited because your videos have answered so many questions I had. I learn so much from every video and I am interested to see where I am at with my work a year from now. Thank you for sharing!
Hooked on your series'. They're exceptionally informative and most importantly: empowering. I find that the wisdom you're passing on is helping to encourage me to confidently sell at prices I feel comfortable with, not the prices customers feel comfortable with. I'm not sure I'm bursting at the seams with confidence on that front yet, but it's helping me set up a far shorter path than I'd initially seen to truly value myself and the work I put out. So far I've managed to sell one framed watercolour and cover all material, frame and marketing costs for it and (and to comp the hard costs of a few others), but I know in the future that will only get better as both my confidence as an artist and seller improves alongside my skill and creative vision. Thanks!
Thank you for sharing that that was actually very insightful insightful and enlightening I would not have thought that you would have difficulty at all with getting into a show or marketing your paintings! But the audience for your paintings it's probably much smaller than mine because not everyone can afford to spend thousands on beautiful artwork. I'd love to get even close to where you're at! I will be entering a show next month. I hope it goes well!
It seems to me in my area which is a poor area of Western Kentucky that no one buys real paintings. People are happy with some copied print from Hobby Lobby. No one appreciates real art anymore other than real artist.
Absolutely motivating. I will say, though, that the competitions I see locally do not allow art entries that took place through art instruction classes. Would this apply to your homework assignments, Stefan? Your lecture really hit the nail on the head for me. Thank you.
been watching your videos for a day or so now and they are a great source of information i am now living in japan. i came out here to follow my path as a artist and just stayed . this video is great it has some much info i will have to watch it a few more times to get it right but thank you. any advice for people living over seas ? i was thinking of just sending my works to a bunch of places >
I’m a little confused when you say “Apply to Shows”. There are the shows where you apply with a minimal entry fee but if you are accepted there is generally a $300 booth fee and you have to supply your own booth. Then there are the shows from the art associations but you have to be a member and then your work still has to be juried for the various shows. The only other type of shows I’m aware of are the Plein Air competitions. Is that what you were referring to with “Art For the Parks?
Arts for the Parks was THE art competition for landscape artist for many years. It was very prestigious and getting in the top 100 or even top 200 was really an accomplishment. If any awards were won it usually meant getting your foot in the door at one of the nicer galleries. Unfortunately, the original people who sponsored and ran the competition ended the whole thing. Their is a new "arts for the Parks" but it is only a shadow of the original. The original competition ending marked the end of the so called "good ole days". It took me many trys but I finally got into the top 200 of the original competition (back in the day). I wish I had gone to the gala. I failed to capitalize and leverage that top 200 finish. The advent of the internet has taken the glitz and fanfare of art and turned it into a midnight shopping run at Wal-Mart.
Marc Tonzillo I'm not motivated by contests or people's opinions. I'm motivated by creating something that moves me. I'm happy when others like it but not motivated in the least to create for that reaction.
I help a group of ladies paint each week.... I’ve noticed that a lot of people want to be great at what they do but won’t practice.....that awful P word 😊
Although the entry fee is 'low cost' for these shows etc. I still really resent paying them, I just think they're a great money maker for the host, taking advantage of desperate artists. I won't pay anyone a penny to then probably refuse my entry anyway. Fuck that
Just wanted to get phone call coaching from you sir. But monthly fees is something which i cannot afford. Hence, I will rather stick to TH-cam. My bad (luck)
Is being an artist what is said from 16:42 to 17:02, and eventually sell some picture? So sad, and empty, like the world is today, where everything is falling apart. No one of that artists that lives their lives in the way mentioned in that 16:4217:02 wanted to live their lives that way, they just couldn't live it differently.
I am enjoying your videos, having recently found them while looking up composition tips for a less-than-thrilling commission. Thank you. But I was surprised to hear that student work is being entered into professional competitions. It seems that you keep the assignments fairly open-ended for the student to express his own creativity and problem-solving. Still, when someone else guides the criteria [especially by a paid teacher... vs a group of artists working together as friends, for example], it seems to me that is it not truly the work of an individual artist. If that is the case, I would never think to enter my student work into anything other than a student show.
Some students works are better than other teachers works. You were looking for composition tips does that make you a student and if so are you being influenced by me? are you then a student? My dear Kelly, we are all students. History will decide really if you are an artist or not. BTW I can see the influents of another artist in your work. Don't be so judgmental, enjoy life and be free of what others do and concentrate on your art.
Thank you for replying, and wow, so fast, Stefan Baumann. Perhaps we are speaking of apples and oranges, yes, I get it... both fruits. Of course you see influences of others in my own work. No one creates anything in a vacuum and no one is self-taught, ever. What I mean in my comment above is that in the course of my paid lessons, I would never dream of entering a class assignment into a competition AS ENTIRELY MY OWN WORK. That does not mean that I would not show it or sell the work. Another way to perhaps illustrate my point: If a work by two or more artists wins a competition, would you all not share the spoils? Even a percentage? Of course we are all students, forever. Anyone who thinks he has the answers is just an idiot. While I can be an idiot about a lot of subjects, I never ever forget how little I actually know. Each project I take on is intended to teach me something new, such as my current commission and why I sought out new ideas on composition. Each person I come across, dead or alive, influences my person, so yes, I am being influenced by you. However, if you gave me a homework assignment, and I did it, and even if it was the most amazing thing ever, I would still not enter it into a competition without acknowledging that YOU [i.e., someone not only NOT me, but someone I paid to get instruction from on that one piece] had a hand in the work, even if it was just choosing the object or theme. But, perhaps I am just a prude. The world moves on, but on this point, I control my own behaviour, at the very least. I feel it is more honest.
I admire your integrity, I wish more people were like you in every aspect of the world and not only in art. Create great work that inspires others. Teach and pass on knowledge to others that you meet along the way and I hope someday we meet and share what we learned.

Your welcome and thanks for the kind words
Mr. Stefan I am an old timer my pleasure is music and painting I love to hear from you how to start or what to do, many thanks.
Excellent and exactly
I thank you for your contributions to the artistic world!!
Should have watched this in 2017 :) I'm one of the 90%. Thanks for sharing this, so inspiring!

Ok - I'm doing it - thanks for the motivation Stefan.
Keep in touch and let me know how it goes.
Just entered The New English Art Club with a portrait in watercolour and then The Society of Women Artists with an equine watercolour. Feels good! Thanks for the impetus Stefan.
If you can do portrait when he could not, you are already better than what he is as an artist. George Wu, AIA, ARCHITECT,NCARB 2017-10-18
Thank you for being so honest and generous with your tips and information. I love the way you deliver the information.
You are right that preparing for an art show forces you to really improve your work. But painting a commissioned portrait is even more rigorous! especially if the person you are painting is particular about the way that they look.
You bet; I hate painting commissions
I do also. But babies are sort of easy, Painting. Adults often freak out when they see themselves.
Along with that, I read somewhere that portrait artists of many years ago would only paint their commission subject (model) in a very attractive way, flattering them. That is how and why they could make money.
Stefan Baumann so do I, lol!
GOD BLESS you and your family thank you.
Thats so true now I start selling my art i want to improve my art even better. My goal is to do realism paintings
Well said, you get your whip out to your student's, I always say (fear stops us going for word) make them sweat!! I did it and I sold, yeaa TFS Mairead in Ireland

Absolutely motivating. I will say, though, that the competitions I see locally do not allow art entries that took place through art instruction classes. Would this apply to your homework assignments, Stefan? Your lecture really hit the nail on the head for me. Thank you.

I just want to paint and make people happy. I don't want my work to be judged by anyone. I'm the judge of my art.
That works
Works for me.
Marc Tonzillo I'm not motivated by contests or people's opinions. I'm motivated by creating something that moves me. I'm happy when others like it but not motivated in the least to create for that reaction.
💕💕💕💕
Cool pirate shirt and vest.
By the way I love you work.
GOOD STUFF STEFAN,,GARY JENKINS
Gary are you the Gary Jenkins on PBS ?
Gary are you the Gary Jenkins on PBS ?
I think prints, giclees etc have brought down the value of art.
I dont agree, you will have people that cant afford originals and value prints
I help a group of ladies paint each week.... I’ve noticed that a lot of people want to be great at what they do but won’t practice.....that awful P word 😊
Thanks for sharing!!
Although the entry fee is 'low cost' for these shows etc. I still really resent paying them, I just think they're a great money maker for the host, taking advantage of desperate artists. I won't pay anyone a penny to then probably refuse my entry anyway. Fuck that
Are you trying to encourage or discourage us - cutting body parts off - incurable disease - lol.. Great Info... as always thank you.
LOL I always want to inspire
What about art for disabilities ?
Just wanted to get phone call coaching from you sir. But monthly fees is something which i cannot afford. Hence, I will rather stick to TH-cam. My bad (luck)
Is being an artist what is said from 16:42 to 17:02, and eventually sell some picture?
So sad, and empty, like the world is today, where everything is falling apart.
No one of that artists that lives their lives in the way mentioned in that 16:42 17:02 wanted to live their lives that way, they just couldn't live it differently.
Went to go turn up my playback speed, it was already tho
Do you think I should have a painting in the ladies toilet?
If this Guys Crap can sell then anyone can sell.
@@StefanBaumann Thank you. That is kind of you to write. Buon lavoro! :-)
