- kd and The Reclines appear in the show, Town and Country, on UK's Channel Four in 1991. They were promoting their new album Absolute Torch & Twang.
Johnny Get Angry was written by Hal David and Sherman Edwards. The only version available from kd, which is live, is on a 12 inch record with 'Our Day Will Come'.

I had heard Joanie Sommers' "Johnny Get Angry" for the first time on an oldies station and was startled by its regressive message. I secretly loved it regardless, but I assumed no woman would want to revive it during more enlightened times. When I saw k.d. lang perform it on "Saturday Night Live," I was thrilled that she used it to make a statement that was relevant despite the anachronistic nature of the song. And yes, her vocal is remarkable!
What was the "statement"?
@@jn8ive60 It's a song about a man dominating a woman, and therefore it's not a stretch that it could extend into an abusive relationship as k.d. lang was demonstrating.
OMG what timing and stage presence and amazing voice talent and superb instrument of voice. She is the whole package and real deal ...amazing.
I saw her in Charlotte NC during this tour and we got to meet her after the show. Not only did she talk to us (we were on the third row) during the show, she remembered us after the show and was very appreciative that we hung around to meet her afterward and nobody else did. I've been crazy about her since 1984, when I read a review of her album in RS, bought it and wore it out. Her voice is hypnotic!

These folks are no strangers to me, however, I have never seen this particular clip before. I don't want it to ever go away.

I came across this late at night as a teenager in the 90s. I was not a fan. I was deep into
alternative music at the time. This performance changed my entire view of her. I was instantly in love.

I think her cover of this song was meant as more of a statement. The song, in it's original form, sounds almost like a peppy endorsement of domestic violence. Or, at least, an archaic view of masculinity. "Johnny get angry, Johnny get mad...Johnny, show me that you care, really care for me." kd really brings that out with her exaggerated show of being hit (and falling to the floor).

But the original song was never about domestic violence.It was about a man being a man.Not the feminine type man,but a manly man.
Johnny is probably a wimp,who doesn't even have the courage to stop Freddie from bothering his girl.When she threatens to leave him instead of showing of her he loves her and wants her to stay by going out of his way and doing crazy romantic things,he instead stands there like a little child being scolded.
Her desire is clear,she wants her man to make her feel protected,to be her rock,someone she can count on through tough times,to show her that he will fight the whole world for her.

I've been trying to locate a copy of the Bravo profile show of kd. anyone know where? i love her so much and my old vhs copy is now grainy and faded> thanks I also love her hands!!
Funny story: Halloween, i think of 1994, i went out to the lgbtq bars in my Saint Louis, Mo, and dressed as ' k d lang ". If you saw me, we have a pretty similar face, and i was told on a few occasions in and outside the gay community. I wanted to dress sharp, and bc i was too hyper-self-critical, like we tend to be, i felt i had to. I'm not really girly anyway, and have been told i'm a '' d*ky-F*g" more than one too. So, i thought i could look both sexy and classly, maculine as well. Loved her, stil do, and her appearance on SNL doing this song was etched in my mind as brilliant for somemany reasons. (I THINK it was Saturday Night lLive, almost 100%, but i don't see it on youtube anywhere. I'm politicalgtoo, so this struck the rght chord, pun intended. .So i searched and called arround to vintage clothing shops and antique stores and the like, looking ofr a MATADOR JACKET, when this was before Ebay so enriched gay boy's lives.. . And really, WHAT regualr guy doesn't have two or three MATADOR JAKCETS in their closet? So, got it. It may have been a version for a bigger lady, but it was do-able. The ONLY person who apporached me, and i'm going to guess ,NOT for my number, thugh i maybe have been as adorably androgyous as k d... She was dressed as the charcer 'Alfalfa" from that balck-and-whie tv show "Our Gang" with the fake freckles and the strand of hair sticking up on top. So adorable, and if she'd have hit n me, who knows? It was autumn ,and i wanted to be dating SOMEBODY for the Christmas holidays,.. (Kidding, prob.) She pegged me right, so to speak. No guy did, or even prob talked to me. Thank you k d. and i wish you'd get some aiarplay, if you want it. Talent and beauty shoudn't be frmaed as a rend or flash n the pan which she ain't. ( yeah, if SHE's called "BEAUTIFUL" i am too! ) ,,ARTFUL, a PERFORMANCE ART PIECE ,but whthe the excellent chops to make it as gorgeously great to listen to, as it was beauftiul and impaortant to watch.... kinda of a timely thing to consider playing on FB and the like, gven how gender-based , sexuality-connected violence and misogyny is sadly a topic that's worse than ever in our "Make America Break Again..women's heart and sourls and bodies...
