Cab Calloway...famous jazz singer / perfomrer, had a band from the 1920's on. Becasue he appeared in this movie, at age 72, he revived his career for a while, got gigs and and went out on top. He is an icon in American Music. Got his start playing in the Cotton Club in NYC. The young set who saw this movie thought he was awesome, total lcharisma. This guy was a world class star. Watch that spin he did in the white tux!! A his age? Wow!

The parole officer was Frank Oz, the voice of Yoda and many muppets, as well as appearing in several movies. The waiter in the restaurant was played by Paul Reubens, who played Pee-wee Herman. That's strange ... in the States, Star Wars V: The Empire Strikes Back was released on June 18, 1980, and filming began on March 5, 1979. However, The Blues Brothers, which came out on June 20, 1980 didn't begin filming until July 1979. I don't know, but whether you go by filming dates or release dates, I would say she definitely knew Jabba The Hutt first.

I got to see the Blues Brothers Band at the Birmingham jazz festival (UK) in 1990 - they were brilliant and had Booker T with them. Eddie Floyd and Edwin Starr were singing for them, around 1990/91

The cast in this movie is full of some you know, and some you have no idea. The Nazi leader was really a nice guy, comedian Henry Gibson. He got his first big break as a cast member of the very popular comedy show, Rowan and Martin's Laugh - In [1968-73]. He worked with future star Goldie Hawn on that show. He had a great movie and TV career as a comedy actor, playing all kinds of kooky characters, even this Nazi. The promoter in the steam room played by the recently late Steve Lawrence, a famous singer of the 1950's on [with his wife Edie Gourmet]. He dabbled in acting.

Well he's kinda right. Before the Swastika was called what it is called now, it was a sun symbol. The Hindus used it, the Native Americans, and some other ancient cultures.

If I remember correctly, the differentiation is in the rotation of the arms. It's true that the swastika was an ancient symbol of peace in some religions (like Hinduism) going back thousands of years, but ever since it was hijacked by the Nahtzees in the 1930s it has pretty much only been associated with them. One subtle difference is that the ancient spiritual swastika is usually sitting on one edge in a square orientation, but the Nahtzee swastika sits on one corner, in a diamond shaped orientation.

There is a podcast called "It Was A Sh&# Show" that covered this movie. Belushi was so coked up that he would just wander off set and Akroyd would have to go look for him. So he's wandering around these Chicago neighborhoods knocking on doors. He gets to one house where the guy tells him, "Oh, you must be looking for that one guy! He's in here crashed out on the couch!"

Actually during the filming of this movie Carrie Fisher and Dan Aykroyd were engaged after Dan reportedly proposed to her on the movie set, but the engagement ended when Fisher reunited with her ex Paul Simon. I got to see the Blues Brothers Band at the Birmingham jazz festival (UK) in 1990 - they were brilliant and had Booker T with them. Eddie Floyd and Edwin Starr were singing for them, around 1990/91

This was him returning a favor to director John Landis, who had made a brief cameo (sans beard) as a motorcycle telegram delivery driver in Spielberg’s WWII comedy 1941 (1979), also featuring John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd (and half of Hollywood), which was released in theaters a little over 6 months before this film came out.
Back then, the two men were friends. Unfortunately that friendship ended a few years later, in the wake of the Twilight Zone movie tragedy, when veteran actor Vic Morrow and two young Asian children were killed in a helicopter accident during shooting of Landis’ segment of the anthology film TWILIGHT ZONE: THE MOVIE (1983). After that incident, Spielberg never spoke to Landis again.
I saw this at a drive in theater when I was 13 in 1982. It was a double feature with Animal House!! It was an eye opening night for me. 🙂

I almost got to play with Cab Calloway, once upon a time. But at the time I was 3rd Call, and they only needed two. I did go to the gig, and got to meet Cab and shake his hand.
The British woman at the Gas Station was 1960's Super Model, Twiggy. At the time of filming Carrie Fischer was engaged to Dan Ackroyd. The Waiter at the Chez Paul was Paul Rubens (Pee Wee Herman). The Lead Singer of the Good Old Boys was Actor Charles Napier who played the General in the Austin Powers movies. One of the Soloists in the Church Choir is Chaka Khan.
The cops in the upside down car in the mall are John Landis and singer-songwriter Stephen Bishop.
Napier also played a "space hippie" in an episode of Star Trek TOS.
The actor playing the prison guard who returns Jake’s items is Frank Oz. Frank Oz is a great director, but is most known for being the puppeteer of Yoda, Bert (from Sesame Street), Miss Piggy, Grover, Fozzie Bear, and other muppets. Thus, it is a bit of an inside joke when the man in Toys R Us is holding a Grover doll and asking about Miss Piggy.

My favorite story about the filming of this is that one day while they were shooting on location in Chicago no one in the cast or crew could find John Belushi. They started a door to door search in the neighborhood until they found him in the living room of some random resident's house eating a sandwich.

The cast in this movie is full of some you know, and some you have no idea. The Nazi leader was really a nice guy, comedian Henry Gibson. He got his first big break as a cast member of the very popular comedy show, Rowan and Martin's Laugh - In [1968-73]. He worked with future star Goldie Hawn on that show. He had a great movie and TV career as a comedy actor, playing all kinds of kooky characters, even this Nazi. The promoter in the steam room played by the recently late Steve Lawrence, a famous singer of the 1950's on [with his wife Edie Gourmet]. He dabbled in acting.
Favorite movie quote, the Police dispatcher. “The use of unnecessary violence in the apprehension of the Blues Brothers, has been approved.” Unnecessary violence, not unnecessary force.
The Police dispatcher was the machine gunner from the movie "Home Alone"; his quote was the "Keep the change, ya filthy animal"
Dan Ackroyd tells a story about filming this movie Saturday night live was big back then …so apparently John Belushi wondered off set nobody could find him he had knocked on some random family’s door introduced himself had dinner with them the crew found him hours later crashed out on that family’s couch he fell asleep watching tv with them lol

The mall they went through and demolished was Dixie Square Mall in Harvey, Ill. It had already been abandoned for a few years when they shot the movie. Reportedly, 1 million was spent outfitting the stores so they could demolish everything.

My siblings and I adopted Murph's "Don't you go changing" after seeing this movie in the 80s. This movie was raked over the coals for being excessive and being a "one-joke" Saturday Night Live sketch. Oh, have things changed. Because of the use of CGI in films, the appreciation for all the practical car chases and wrecks found great favor. As always, I love watching your reaction videos.
Also, the S.W.A.T. team's "Huts" were probably the best ADR ever recorded.

Cookie Monster, Bert (of Bert and Earnie) and Grover on Sesame Street and so many others. BTW, you caught a lot of the musicians, but I don't know if you caught Steven Spielberg, who was the guy who played the Cook County Assessor's Office Clerk that they paid the $5,000 to for the back taxes on the orphanage. There were tons of musicians, actors, etc. that were not specifically paid much attention that were also in this film, and most people today never notice or realize their importance. You should scan IMDB for the Full Cast & Crew page. It's quite interesting ... they had everyone there.
