I was at the Sunday game between these two teams. In batting practice, Bonds hit a shot that slammed off of the back wall behind the RF bleachers. We were sitting in the upper deck on the 1B side. The ball reached its peak height almost at the right center field wall and then hit the back wall hard. Ive seen hundreds of live games and I NEVER seen a ball hit that far!! Roids or not, he was amazing...and his .609 on base percentage in '04 is difficult to comprehend.

As a long-time Yankee fan I've been lucky enough to see that pitch many many times in person and it's a wonder anyone EVER made contact on it. The single greatest pitch in the history of baseball and it's not close.

It was the 4th pitch that set up the last one. Bonds took it for a ball, but by doing this, Rivera made Bonds think about pitches high in the zone. Rivera's cutter spins like a fastball so it's hard to tell which pitch was thrown until the ball is fairly close. By this time, if you did not make a decision, you'll be all tied up. In order to hit pitches that are 90+, batters have to start their swing before the ball is released.

@@generatorx Bonds was trying too hard to hit a homer against the nearly invincible Mariano Rivera. You can tell he wasn't going to settle for a walk. He would've still chased a pitch out, that's how badly he wanted to prove his greatness. Had Bonds drew a walk, he would've still won the battle, but he wasn't going to get any glory from it.

Your job as the pitcher is to get the guy out.. a supreme challenge when it came to Bonds. Notice that he didn't give him much to pitch.. You do NOT throw strikes at this guy. Notice how nasty he pulled that inside pitch. Yep missed that last fast ball but not by much. Bonds doesn't strike out very often but he did that time. Yep Riviera got atta that one.
