      I've had some excellent sailing in the punt and the dory on Essex and Ipswich Bay here in Massachusetts!

    Watch out for a dipping lug boat in the jester challenge next year. That will be me.

      Oh wow! The jester challenge is such a cool event! Have you got a look at the other videos on my channel, Sailing Centennial, she is a replica of Alfred Johnson transatlantic sailing dory Centennial of 1876, gaff rigged sloop.
      Best of luck in your endeavors!

      I will have a look. I own the boat that inspired the TV series Howards Way it was called Mignone and I changed it's name to Jesus Cares. You can see her on my old channel David-Paul Newton-Scott. If you put in the search "enntering Limehouse Basin " you will get the videos.
      She will be renamed Howards Way Jesus Cares will be another boat.
      I think the dipping lug is the rig of the future powerful but low. Because the sail is in one block it is difficult for air to leak from one side to the other so it is a big roll damper.

      @@DavidPaulNewtonScott interesting, a lug is almost a square sail... unstated mast?
      When Johnson crossed from Gloucester Massachusetts to Liverpool he had his banks dory rigged with multiple sails including a square sail the premier off shore sail of the time.

    Sailing beautifully and making good progress in light airs. The dipping lug is rare on a small boat, but is an incredibly beautiful rig. Which method do you use for dipping? Do you lower the yard and rehoist it on the other side, or do you you dip it around the front of the mast like a Beer lugger?

      These li'l punts are just soooooo much fun!
      The yard dips behind the mast, it's so small and light that I can loose the sheet, move forward and unhook the tack, pull down on the tack bringing the spar vertical, bring the luff and spar around the mast and rehook the tack and return to my seat and haul in on the sheet. The whole movement takes maybe 8-10 seconds.

    Hi from Japan. I'm fitting out my Discovery 169 canoe as a sailing rig, and will be making my own sail (Dacron rip-stop). As such, I am curious as to why there is no boom on your setup (unless that's the definition of "dipping lug...). Thanks

    • @danoyes1
      @danoyes1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually yes that is part of a dipping lug, no boom, much like a old square sail from which they derived. This lug has a significantly flatter head to the sail and I have since recut the sail to get the yard to stand more vertical, Google dipping lug for images, to tack the dipping lug the foot of the sail and the spar are brought round the mast... interesting rig that I've had a great deal of fun with.

    Hey Dan, Pat Collins here in Hampton NH. Just found your channel. Looks great. What design is your boat as I didn't see any full hull pics? Thanks!

      Hi Pat, better late than never 😁
      The boat is a West Mersa Duck Punt, traditional gunning punt used on the marshes and bays around London. It's 14' and proportioned like a canoe, with hard chine and flat bottom. Check out my other video, crashing in the creek for a shot of the hill and rig.
