Shout out to my dad who rented this movie when I was a little kid, and when we were watching it, he’s just like, “welp. It’s too late to turn it off now”

Some people made the joke that Robert Pattinson's Batman had his tragic night after watching Shrek, I don't think so, I think it was Monkeybone. Because A) obsession with fear and B) fascination with catgirls.
I remember the ads for this way back, and nothing indicated that monkeybone was actually going to be the bad guy for most of the movie. It probably wouldn't have flopped so badly if it had just been the two of them working together to get out of the coma the whole time.
Credit where it's due: Although the monkey character is incredibly obnoxious, Brendan does a tremendous job of acting; in his body language you can "see" the monkeybone character through him.
I feel like adam showing us monkeybone now just to ease us into the reveal that Scoot is his own Monkeybone esque creation that came from the Nightmare dimension.
The orginal "dark tone" art made by Frasier's character, the cool art, was done by an American painter named Mark Ryden, who does some . . . interesting art. Mostly involving female children, Lincoln's head, old toys, and cuts of meat. It's . . . something.
5:30 "why did hollywood think men kissing was funny?" asked the same guy who screams KISS! KISS! KISS! during every episode of 13 reasons why whenever two guys are facing each other
@@iwakeupandboomimarat no, it was funny because the idea that two male characters that are established as straight would randomly break into a homosexual kiss is outlandishly absurd, hence all the 90s movies (and even the old looney tunes cartoons) that did so
To be fair, the movie could be seen as an attack on how artists with great talent end up making shitty cartoons for horny teenagers because they're forced to make ends meet - instead of expressing the art they want to be remembered for.
It's kinda frustrating how the stop motion of Monkey Bone is so good but the movie is a nightmarish experience to watch. How much blow did everyone take before they started filming this?
I have slight childhood trauma of catching bits of this movie playing on the family TV at like 2am, back when I was like nine years old. Specifically, I remember the organ flinging balloon fight, the deflating Brendan nightmare, and just random bits and pieces of Monkeybone Brendan being himself. I had no idea what was going on and it was a super uncomfortable, disorienting, and overstimulating experience. I kinda figured it was nowhere near as bad as I remembered, you know how bad childhood memories tend to get super overblown and distorted over time? But no, watching this now, it's clear to me that child me was right on the money, this movie is cursed as hell, for real.
One of my earliest memories is watching the climax of this movie on tv, so the image of a corpse telling a screaming monkey man to get in a bag has always kind of been in the back of my mind. Don’t know what that says about my development as a person
The escaping corpse sequence is what sticks in my brain from when I was a kid, had no idea what the hell movie it was from for the longest time and it was weird to see
For me, it was the "pull out your liver and throw it" moment. Definitely involuntarily lodged into my brain. What's wild is in that time the makeup conveyed to us he was dead. Now it just looks like Kattan in 00's movie makeup. Still unsettling though.
In my city (New Orleans) an ambulance ride is between $500 and $2,000 depending on what is required during transport. As for two days in a coma, at a teaching hospital (cheapest option), an uninsured patient can expect to be billed about $1,200. Which is still ridiculous but they actually charge you way less if you're uninsured; the obscenely inflated prices you hear about are typically billed to insurance companies.
Movie fun fact: this movie got Giancarlo Esposito his famous role in Breaking Bad. During the shoot, Vince Gilligan wandered onto the set and saw Esposito in makeup. He was so inspired by his naturally threatening face, accentuated by the devil makeup, that he offered him a role as the bad guy for the rest of his acting career.
Some trivia, I wanted to know what Rose McGowan thought about the movie because of her work with the metoo movement and the way they depict her in this role. According to her, they fired Henry Selick halfway through the movie, and that's why the tone and the film is not that great. She also said that Downtown was supposed to be called Dark Town but that the executives at fox changed it because they were afraid of upsetting African Americans. Otherwise, she was happy to be a part of the movie.
This movie, with Bob Odenkirk chasing dead Chris Kattan might just make me watch the whole thing myself. Thanks, yous. Always entertaining. The spirit of MST3K lives on with even more modern commentary.
26:59 this scene alone cements the movie being better then the IMDb rating would imply The art direction throughout the creative coma/nightmare sequences are genuinely glorious in it's visual absurdity.

I think that was their intended plot, but it's made impossibly more complex by the lack of direction and plot progression.
Selick says there's a director's cut, so that's an interesting prospect. Lots of cut bits of the nightmare juice set up, as well as tons of cut stop motion scenes with Monkeybone and Stu. Some surfaced through the DVD. I think the movie was supposed to be less about "creating creepy cartoons" and more about Stu's fear of selling out and coping with the garbage he's made. There's a glossed over bit in the final cut where his girlfriend mentions that Monkeybone was a product of his "left hand", which I always took as meaning that it's not his true self. Stu clearly has baggage that he's never gone through, as evidence by his paintings, and trying to pretend that everything is OK by creating a crass, low brow cartoon doesn't solve that. The idea of him confronting Monkeybone is actually really interesting, but there's not enough time dedicated to it. I still kind of love this movie from a design standpoint and Fraser and Katan are both great physical comedians.

As a fan of the Artemis Fowl book series, I NEED these three to do commentary on the garbage Artemis Fowl movie. I don't care if it's a $30 Patreon tier, I NEED that kinda closure.
After a car crash sends repressed cartoonist Stu Miley (Brendon Fraser) into a coma, he and the mischievous Monkeybone, his hilarious alter-ego, wake up in a in a purgatory-like limbo filled with mythical gods and creatures that revel in the nightmares of the living. Eventually, Monkeybone takes over Stu’s body and escapes to wreak havoc on the real world! Now Stu must outwit death (Whoopi Goldberg) and stop Moneybone before his sister pulls the plug on reality forever!
I unironically love this movie. It’s a disaster, it’s an acid trip, it’s a half baked nightmare, but it just tickles a strange part of my brain. As obnoxious and incoherent as it is, I end up watching it at least once a year just to revisit it. The practical effects are also nice, if not terrifying
Why am I not surprised that Audible is the ad that was fine being put on a video where they say child penis a million times. Other companies get annoyed if you swear too much, Audible gives no shits.
Here in Utah USA about 2003 a friend's daughter contracted spinal meningitis and had to be airlifted to the hospital that was 10 minutes away and it was $1,000 a minute.
There was like a 15 year portion of my life where I saw just the monkey toy farting scene and I never knew what it was from until like a couple years ago
Omg this is the movie that made me start to love Brendan Fraser as an actor (I used to hate him for some inexplicable reason, and I always felt bad but I just couldn’t stand him… until I decided to watch this movie about a decade or so ago) This is such a wild fun ride of a film and I was so excited to see this in my notifications. I love you boys forever for this one.
29:00 - There are 3 Oscar Winners in that shot: Whoopi, Brendan, and that's Thomas Haden Church in the makeup. When Monkeybone is in that room, that gives you FOUR Oscar Nominees in one room....and Harry Knowles shows up as the neighbor, I remember him complaining about how Monkeybone cut his scenes.
The most baffling thing to me about this film is how everything about clearly had a lot of love and effort thrown into it (the effects, the animation, the music) but the story, which feels like it was written the night before it was due.
Haha that’s on point. Ive always loved this movie, absolute chaos and insanity and there so many “good” things put together but it feels so wrong. I know it’s not a good movie but I cherish it lol. Though I always thought that they were selfaware that this was stupid and made 0 sense on purpose.
i relate so much to the idea of what are meant to be comedic situations or whatever actually being horribly depressing and or terrifying, i remember being like 10 and i could not finish alice in wonderland i was literally crying.
holy sheet this movie is terrifying. i remember being a big brandon fan as a kid and BEGGED to see this movie. so glad my parents said no lol this is spooky
This film was a childhood favorite of mine and to this day I still love it. The down town jingle has been living rent free in my head for years bc of it playing on the dvd menu lol
TBF, when I worked at a trauma hospital, I heard some rather unsettling stories of how...eager the organ donor companies were, especially if the organs were from a young person.
I was very happy seeing this video show up in my sub box, I used to watch Monkeybone all the time as a kid. I hope this leads to Adum & Pals watching another unhinged and traumatic childhood movie, Son Of The Mask.
Don't you dare even compare the two. Monkeybone is substantially better than Son of the Mask. The later is an unwatchable disaster. Monkeybone has a ton of passion, creativity, and imagination, and a good portion of it is executed decently. Son of the Mask is absolute Dogshit.
It is one of those movies I have heard of before, then finally look up on Wikipedia, read the story breakdown and like two paragraphs in I have completely lost all plot of what I am reading. Describing this movie in words is probably even harder than watching it.
5:45 - yes, the xfiles spinoff The "Lone Gunman", premiered 6 months before 911, where the plot was an airliner being hacked and remote controlled into the wtc. And then Condalisa Rice got on TV and said they never even considered that scenario.
I can hear the Blockbuster playing his in the background in my memory. I think a this time it was between this, Mummy 2 and Bedazzled. Man was making bank
Thank you for reminding me of this movie. It used to air all the time on public television in my country when I was a child, and it gave me nightmares everytime I saw it. For years i thought it was something that I made up when I was younger.

As a fan of the Artemis Fowl book series, I NEED these three to do commentary on the garbage Artemis Fowl movie. I don't care if it's a $30 Patreon tier, I NEED that kinda closure.
This movie has TWO Better Call Saul actors: Odenkirk and Giancarlo Esposito (who plays the devil).
And nightmare juice is involved.
Have you seen the 1993 mario movie? You'd probably like it.
I feel you, always loved it for the same reasons.
What is a Burger King to a Burger God?
What's a Burger God to a Nonburgerliever?

a Burger King of Kings
For the longest time I always mistaken cool world and monkeybone to be the same movie, they might as well be in the same universe.
Oh God I forgot all about Cool World.
It's a real cool world

Hope you're kissing catgirls in heaven Scoot, rest in peace
Why am I not surprised that Audible is the ad that was fine being put on a video where they say child penis a million times. Other companies get annoyed if you swear too much, Audible gives no shits.
I loved this movie when I was like, 10.
I strongly doubt it's held up, but I'm stoked to hear you tear into it.
I've been doing an Adum and Pals marathon since Scoot died, goddamn I'm gonna miss him
Here in Utah USA about 2003 a friend's daughter contracted spinal meningitis and had to be airlifted to the hospital that was 10 minutes away and it was $1,000 a minute.
That is literally the best ad read I've ever heard 10/10
There was like a 15 year portion of my life where I saw just the monkey toy farting scene and I never knew what it was from until like a couple years ago
God I miss Scoot, that ending hurts now
Omg this is the movie that made me start to love Brendan Fraser as an actor (I used to hate him for some inexplicable reason, and I always felt bad but I just couldn’t stand him… until I decided to watch this movie about a decade or so ago)
This is such a wild fun ride of a film and I was so excited to see this in my notifications.
Jumpscared by the Miss Kitty thumbnail bc a dude I knew would constantly buy vore art commissions of her
A terrible use of my girlfriend
It's always weird when someone hyper fixates on an obscure character
The most baffling thing to me about this film is how everything about clearly had a lot of love and effort thrown into it (the effects, the animation, the music) but the story, which feels like it was written the night before it was due.
Haha that’s on point. Ive always loved this movie, absolute chaos and insanity and there so many “good” things put together but it feels so wrong. I know it’s not a good movie but I cherish it lol. Though I always thought that they were selfaware that this was stupid and made 0 sense on purpose.
I used to think Fear and Loathing was one of the most accurate drug trips on film ... Now it has to be whatever the hell this is 😂
I legit screamed when I saw this in my sub box, I love this movie unironically lmao
I screamed too but it was just a hobo gnawing off my toes.
38:34 oh no this is sad now
I was on my 3rd watch of the Adum and Pals playlist. So happy this is out now!
Rookie numbers!
This is my favorite segment on YMS
You’re hooked now. I watch their 13 Reasons Why commentary once a month at this rate. Helps me sleep 🤣
i relate so much to the idea of what are meant to be comedic situations or whatever actually being horribly depressing and or terrifying, i remember being like 10 and i could not finish alice in wonderland i was literally crying.
holy sheet this movie is terrifying. i remember being a big brandon fan as a kid and BEGGED to see this movie. so glad my parents said no lol this is spooky
The irony of Chris Katan having a broken neck in this is pretty great
A part of me thinks Adum held on to this video so he could give his first sponsor buyer’s remorse lol
Kitty awakened something in me as a kid when I first saw this movie, and I’m not proud of it. Love this movie still
TBF, if i'd saw the movie before i would be in the same boat
the fact that adum isn't a horse so i am watching three animals talk about a coma is a crime against humanity
It's weird, I was just thinking of the scene today where he flings the bonesaw around but couldn't remember what movie it was from.
Hey Adum, get that sponsor from Bad Dragon. Get that bag.
That's genuinely upsetting
please please keep doing these cut down movie vids they give me life
I was very happy seeing this video show up in my sub box, I used to watch Monkeybone all the time as a kid.
That catgirl was like 2 years too early and slipped under the radar completely
I'm not ashamed to admit that Miss Kitty was my sexual awakening as a young lad.
She’s hot, no shame
Most blame Lola Bunny, I will always blame Miss Kitty.
Roxanne from A Goofy Movie.

Always happy when Clone High gets referenced.
I can hear the Blockbuster playing his in the background in my memory. I think a this time it was between this, Mummy 2 and Bedazzled. Man was making bank
Hell yeah Clone High reference. MAKEOVER
Thank you for reminding me of this movie. It used to air all the time on public television in my country when I was a child, and it gave me nightmares everytime I saw it.
For years i thought it was something that I made up when I was younger.
