Coca-Cola Coolant Flush! Will it work? Will the heater in my Matiz be warm again?

  • Can Coca-Cola Zero cure the feeble heater in my 1999 Daewoo Matiz? At a couple of quid a bottle (no cheap cola in my local shop it seems!) it certainly isn't a very expensive way to find out.

Many moons ago, I had a British-assembled Austin A55 Deluxe - a lovely old car that I regret selling on....but anyway - and it had an overheating issue and any temperature above ambient from its heater was also non-existent. My Dad used to brew his own beer and one particular brew had not aged like it should. In fact it built up so much fizz in the glass bottles that several had exploded before the six month aging period was up. The beer in the remaining bottles was undrinkable unless you enjoyed the taste of a mouthful of baking soda and shouting out the name of our lord and saviour in between coughing and trying to get your breath back. "Nasty" was the nicest thing that was said about the ill-fated "Brew #14".
However, quite by accident we did find it had one redeeming feature - it could remove impurities from - and actually polish - metal surfaces, if left in contact for 15 minutes. Dad then had the brain wave that this may solve the overheating issue in the A55. So, the old cooling fluid was drained and in went 8 x 750ml bottles of the brew. I fired the old girl up and to help move the stuff around the cooling system and warm her up, I took her our for a short run in the country. It didn't take long for the temp needle to climb over normal and the odd puff of steam to appear from under the bonnet (presumably from the overflow hose that used to look like a boiling kettle at the time). A rather acrid aromatic mix of yeast and hot metal filled the cabin and followed the A55 around the block. So strong it was that I truly wondered if I was going to be pulled over for driving a drunken vehicle!
We let her sit for several hours after I got her home and let this small brown sludgy puddle form under the overflow pipe while she hissed and burped in her cooling-down cycle. I was quite worried about what I was going to find when I came out after dinner, but Dad seemed happy enough. We lifted the bonnet - no leaks - and drained the system again and flushed it well. The amount of black and dark orange sludge that came out the pipes was very impressive and looked like the entire contents of the heater and radiator's internals had melted! A milestone also happened in that for the first time ever, water came out of the heater hoses and if you looked in the top of the radiator, the copper / brass header tank shone so well it was almost mirror-like and every hole was clean and open! I pulled the thermostat cover - now polished aluminium inside- and looked at the cast iron in the head under the thermostat - it was without a trace of rusty sediment and looked like the day it left the factory, I reckon.
I put the thermostat back, filled her with coolant and fired her up. Not only did she never overheat again, the heater was never on hot for long in the winter as it worked too well for the Auckland climate! Brew 14 was used on a couple of other blocked cooling systems after that before the last of the bottles blew itself out of existence. It might not have been drinkable, but it was a brilliant "natural" cooling system restorer!

I remember my old Opel Monza that had a naff heater, I took off the two pipes to the heater matrix then put a bit of pipe back on one of the matrix inlet pipes & blocked off the other, the bit of pipe I then jammed under the wiper arm & stuck a funnel on it, I then "borrowed" some industrial strength descaler from work, chucked about a pint of it down the pipe then topped it up with hot water & left it overnight, flushed it out the next day & it got tons of crap out & it certainly sorted out my heater.

One thing I notice in my old 3 pot Fabia is that the modern coolant used (which I'd guess doesn't have water in it, and which I am not supposed to top it up with water) doesn't ever get mucky with rusty deposits - which presumably means the engine/radiator/heater/waterpump are not rusting away from the inside and maybe don't need flushing either. My water cooled motorbike is much the same. The cooling/heating system seems very reliable too, in stark contrast to cars I had back in the 1970s.

Great job, Ian. Glad Myrtle is a happy camper. A word of caution. Since you don't know why the liquid weld was put into the cooling system, watch out for leaks! Years ago a friend had a 74 Oldsmobile Delta 88 sedan with the Oldsmobile 350 (5.7 litre) V8. The block cracked around 100,000 miles. He used a can of "Barz Leak" to see what would happen. Each time the cooling system got flushed, he had to add another tin of it, but the engine was still going strong when the body of the car rotted to the point of being dangerously weak. It then had 187,000 miles on it. The Barz Leak never caused any trouble with the heater, even at -40 degrees, Celsius or Fahrenheit, take your pick. Bloody cold either way since they are the same.

Also, some cars, notably Chesler LH cars with the V6, come from the factory with stop leak in the cooling systems and it must be replaced with every service if the cooling system. Great engineering, that.

I was waiting for the draining coolant to hit the bulb in the lead lamp and explode. I once bought a cam cover gasket for my Citroen ZX 1.4 only to discover very loose bolts! I fitted it anyway as it was only a 5 minute job on that engine.

Yay, warm tootsies again, result. Sulfamic acid is quite efficacious with coolant muck, not so hazardous and can be delivered as a powder, which is handy and economical.

It's a bit of a misnomer that Radweld 'gunks' up the cooling system. Radweld is activated on contact with air. On a small cooling system leak the product will set onncontact with air sealing small holes in the system. The problem occurs when people mistreat their Radwelded coolant by exposing it to air, typically by draining the system for whatever reason and reusing the old Radweld coolant after it has been exposed to air, or by topping up a Radweld treated system with 'aerated' tap water instead od de-ionised water, thereby activating the Radweld before it has a leak to seal.

Ian......A large funnel to catch the draining fluids, and a smaller funnel for the refilling of fluids, would be reasonably cheap and save you a lot of clearing up of messes, mate. :)

Best way to get those horrible springy clips off is with mole grips I find! Plus you can adjust them to fit perfectly depending on how big the clip is.
