I am an American and I absolutely LOVE this song! In fact, it's one of my favorite patriotic songs in the world, and Katherine Jenkins is such a beautiful singer.
Personally, I would rank "I vow to thee my country" right up there with my country's "Oh Shenandoah" - both of which bring goose bumps and tears to my eyes every time I listen to them.
I love America, and therefore greatly respect your love for Great Britain.
Such a love is sacred, and it is an empathy we all can embrace. :)

Ms Elffire, for decades I have considered this melody to be a more stirring patriotic hymn than any extant national anthem. I am amazed that no nation has grabbed it. If the UK becomes a republic, this should become its national anthem.
I also agree that it is cut from the same Celtic cloth as Shenandoah.
The melody is also vaguely familiar because The Planets strongly influenced the classic Hollywood composers. Thaxted sounds to me like the theme for a very great Western.

The composer of this stunning melody taught music theory in a middle school for girls in suburban London. He would then go home and work late in the night composing the orchestral suite from which this melody is taken -- The Planets.

I don't know if you've heard this, by Holst on his 'Planets' suite, the Jupiter movement, is this melody. Worth a listen if you naturally love this melody, as I do too.

Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori
That lays upon the alter primarily the working class!!!!
The Battle of Dettingen (German: Schlacht bei Dettingen) took place on 27 June[13] 1743 at Dettingen in Bavaria during the War of the Austrian Succession. It was the last time that a British monarch (in this case George II) personally led his troops into battle.

My reading concurs. The Irish are mostly Roman Catholics, the Scots and the Welsh are mostly Presbyterian, and the English are most tepid Anglicans or nothing. The Scots have the highest IQs of the lot. The Irish are the best literary artists.
