Let me convey this to younger gamers who never experienced the sight of Virtua Fighter 3 in 1996. Seeing this game in the arcade with the deluxe screen and speakers was incredible. Nothing was like it in 1996. It was mind blowing.

Totally agree, but there was another fighting game in the arcades at the same time that caught my attention for a different reason… had something to do with seeing jiggle physics for the first time in a 3D fighter! 🤣

      Soul Calibur on Dreamcast.
In just a few years, arcade technology had gone from being tens of thousands of dollars worth of state of the art to being shamed by a launch title on home console.
It's why many older gamers are disappointed by the PS5 and Series X. We had decades worth of sudden massive generational leaps....and that era is gone, forever.

@@juststatedtheobvious9633 no. Unreal engine 6 is the next gen graphics but no company is using it yet. The last unreal engine is still relevant + graphics have not been as important as game mechanics. All the crash bandicoot remasters still feel like the games i played in 1998 and that’s because the game features matter more than graphics which is superficial

Some people didn't care for VF3 but i loved it. Seeing this game in the arcades in '96/'97 as a kid was mind blowing. The graphics were state of the art and so far ahead of anything else out there. It was truly something to behold. Even the arcade machine itself was fancy looking. I think what hurt the game was that it took around 3 years to even be playable on a home console, which was the Dreamcast. And also i know a lot of people didn't like the realistic, uneven terrain but i liked it.

    • @stevesteve0521

I think VF3 was just a victim of circumstance at the time. The game is excellent no doubt about it. Problem was that there were just other more intriguing fighting games at that point with tekken, DOA, and Soul edge, plus all the amount of ridiculously good 2d fighters we were getting from capcom, snk, rare and mortal kombat. It also didn’t help that it took too long to get a home console port of the game, VF3 should’ve been a Saturn game, it was still good but way outdated by the time it came out for Dreamcast

Graphically it was sure but mechanically in terms of 3D movement, in 1996, Tobal #1, and in 1997 Tobal 2, both by Dreamfactory, developed for Square, by Seichi Ishii, former lead Game Designer for the original Virtua Fighter, and Motomu Oniguchi, former lead motion designer for Virtua Fighter (who both of them worked on Tekken btw), outdid Virtua Fighter at the time by being the first true free 3D movement hand to hand fighter (Namco's Soul Blade also was out by 96's with its 8 way run system, but that was a weapons based fighter).
Where the only 3D movement for VF3 was isolated to a 3D dodge button (not too much different from Takara's Battle Arena Toshinden series which had a 3D dodge roll mechanic).
But in Tobal #1 and 2, not only was the 3D movement fully controlled via the directional pad/stick, but animations such as low kick to shin leg staggering, reversals on throws, more intricate grapple mechanic (of which neither VF or Tekken has to this day evolved up to its standard), short hop dodges, Just-Frame attacks etc.
Unfortunately Tobal #1 was heavily overshadowed by the upcoming release of FF VII which had a demo disc packaged with it, and Tobal 2 never even got localized.and neither had arcade versions.

The dead or alive series continued what vf3 had started with the stages. Unfortunately the sequels to vf3 abandoned the uneven stages idea. i would disagree about them not being competitive friendly - imo if they can exploited by one player they can be exploited by his opponent as well.

    • @budgiecat2885
      @budgiecat2885 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@LeonidThe90sKid Thing is (well Tekken also abandoned uneven stages from Tekken 4), side stepping movement in both VF4 and on and Tekken 5 and on are quite minimal in movement. Hell, a lot of the people I play online in VF5 dont even use sidestep
(a mistake to be sure but we know VF is a very deep game that takes a while to master).
So sidestep really is imperative strategy wise for traversing uneven stages. Hell, I would even argue throwing in a Battle Arena Toshinden style dodge roll
(incidentally, the Toshinden game for Wii (no relation to the "Battle Arena Toshinden" series despite the same name) had a really good side step dash feature where it was kinda like some of the older Naruto games in you could dash almost behind your opponent. Not to mention the Rival Schools series.
Another issue with uneven stages (which I think could have been fixed later on with proper programming), was how if your opponent is on the 'low ground' and you have the 'high ground' your punches would just whiff over their heads while they get free hits. This is what made people think uneven stages 'were not competitor friendly'.
Now in a real fight. if someone is lower than me, and I want to throw a jab or a back punch, I'm still gonna aim to hit them; I'll just punch at a lower angle (without having to crouch). Conversely, if I'm on the low ground, I would punch or kick upwards
You know how VF3 introduced character eye tracking? It'd be kinda like that. Your characters arms or legs would 'automatically' track the height of your opponent if they were higher or lower than you due to the stage.

Yeah, Sarah. TALK YO SHIT ! VF was the first to do ALL this. People really need to put some respect on SEGA. These retrospectives are brilliant. I see exactly what you're doing. Jog their memory before VF5us drops. VF1, first in 3D. VF2, first in texture and lighting. VF3, first with uneven/open world stages. I can't wait for the retrospectives on 4 and 5. Remind them who started ghost/treasure battles AND customization. That Tokyo map on VF4evo was so next level. The AI actually mimics real VF champions. Fighting games STILL don't do it like that. After you're done, remind them who started the bound/bounce system for extending combo damage in VF5. SEGA was ALWAYS ahead. These casuals out here don't know anything about the history of 3D fighters. Everybody wanna be Street Fighter now. True 3D arcade fighting has been on its death bed. Don't even sweat it, SEGA. Just be YOURSELF. You never needed to be flashy, forgiving and unessessary. As long as you stay strong in Japan, you'll always thrive. And the scene is powerful over here. We would rather have 10 lions than 100 sheep. The " dark souls of fighting games " is back in full glory. With this dragon engine, the photo realism will be unrivaled. Suppose you were to bring back things from VF3 and 4 that once started it all - in VF6 ? Aww, man ...

(I did play and enjoy later instalments, this is my favourite fighting series since discovering the first game as a child, but there was something about VF3 that felt really special)

And now because of this vid I know how to pronounce Aoi Umenokoji's name correctly lol.

The arcade version of VF3tb an amazing game, i would go as far as to say it is the greatest fighting game from the 90s.
AM2 really put a lot of effort into balancing this game despite all the new mechanics but it really paid off in the end.
Also additions like an input interpreter system, universal throw escapes, and making all standing throw inputs into G+P+ a direction, among other great quality of life changes really made VF3 feel a lot more comfortable an intuitive compared to 1 and 2, really a very influential game.
Don't even get me started with the advanced movement techs like Korean step which go perfectly with the uneven ground stages.
Also the combos are pretty fun while not being unfair since everyone can do crazy damage just look at this: th-cam.com/video/Mlg3JsQUVKk/w-d-xo.html
No wonder why people still play this regularly at Japanese arcades like Mikado, VF3tb competitive play is so cool!:
    th-cam.com/video/NPMu9n6faYc/w-d-xo.html
I hope one day we can get an arcade perfect port of this gem of a fighting game with rollback on pc.

VF3 was also the last VF where objects (like Pai's hat) worn by certain characters dropped upon a hard hit. VF3 introduced block animations (disappointingly dropped in VF4 until VF5FS) like a low sweep kick stopped upon lower guard from an opponent..

I kinda hope that SEGA someday plays around with the idea of bringing back TB. Except instead of Team Battle, it’d be Tag Battle similar to TEKKEN Tag Tournament. That’d be pretty damn sick and with how Virtua Fighter 5’s juggle system works, I’d imagine it’d be pretty fun (and maybe a lot of Akira players for his rebounce moves)

VF3 was one of the best vf if not the best after vf2,the reason that left behind was the cost of the arcade machine was to expensive due to real 3d chipset. It was state of the art back then, only crysis from all games made the leap in graphics that virtua fighter 3 did back then.

Yeah, definitely not the most durable hardware console wise, had many a burnt out machines when it came to the laser motors and man could those things grind away if the game required it to stream a lot from the disc. You know when you put a disc in and it didn’t fire up it was game over, time to get a new one.

Also my very first fighting game ever when I was a little kid and I remember how popular this game back in the Philippine arcade scene, so many people used to watch the matches back then.
