    i've literally just finished (gone from Kyle Katarn reading issue #2 of Eye of the Storm to your video) reading all of The High Republic today. i'd kept up with release pace until Mission to Disaster but stopped to finish my legends (movies, tv, novels, short stories & comics) chronological watch/readthrough cos it was taking longer than i'd planned - 14mth instead of the 12 i aimed for.
    so starting March 1 i went back to THR (knowing it was over/almost over but not having read Fallen Star Mission to Disaster Midnight Horizon, Eye of the Storm 1&2 & THR 14&15) & since then have read/listened to it ALL & have to say, it flows so brilliantly when it's binged like this. the proximity in the mind of events, the way they're crossed-over & interconnect, characters & scenes from different perspectives & so much more. all so so good.
    the first time Velko appears in a book? i'm going YES!!
    the three fkn Nihil on the back of Battle for Starlight? i was mad af when i saw them, ngl! 😂
    & tbh they're two daft examples but the way it all fits is just great.
    it really *really* highlights how much 'having a plan' can help.

    I just finished light of the Jedi and I was wondering what order I should read. I agree that it got way too descriptive at times or it would keep reiterating details of characters we didn’t really need. I listened to the audiobook and Marchion Ro sounds so cool, I loved what they did with his audio.
    I bought rising storm and the first two YA in hardback since I figured I could read them quicker than the audiobooks. So many comics and books though that it really gets confusing so I appreciate the guide!
    Edit: I also look forward to more of the Padawans because that’s something I missed in light of the Jedi. I wanted to see the masters develop from younglings to masters so at least I’ll have a group of padawans to get attached to.

      Thanks for watching! If you're just sticking to Adult novels & YA novels, the rest of the order would be: Into the Dark, The Rising Storm, Out of the Shadows, Tempest Runner (Audiodrama), The Fallen Star, and Midnight Horizon. If you're interested in the padawans, they are most prominently featured in A Test of Courage, Into the Dark, The High Republic Adventures IDW comic series, Race to Crashpoint Tower, Out of the Shadows, Mission to Disaster, and Midnight Horizon. Most of The High Republic Phase 1 is written by 5 different authors, all of whom often rely on the fact that you've read their other work. So for example, Daniel Jose Older writes The High Republic Adventures comic. His main protagonist in that comic is the co-lead in Race to Crashpoint Tower (his middle-grade book), and nearly all of his characters from THRA and RtCT play significant roles in Midnight Horizon (his YA book) to the point where I really can't imagine reading it without reading THRA first. It's kind of the initiative's way to try and get people to read everything.

    As someone who doesn't read comics very much, their order in all of this confuses me the most since it's so complicated. Thanks for the guide! For a first time reader, do you think it's fine to read all the books, then all the comics after? Are there a lot of payoffs you get if you read the comics while going through the books? Currently reading Into the Dark.

    • @starwarslads
      @starwarslads  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for watching! Unfortunately to read The High Republic perfectly, the comic order does get a bit confusing since some issues take place during time gaps when no books were releasing. Reading the books before reading any of the comics shouldn't hamper your experience too much in all honesty. The biggest payoff for a grander initiative-wide plot point in the comics comes in the form of the culmination of the Drengir threat. Since you are reading Into the Dark right now, I'd weigh how intrigued you are by the Drengir once you finish the book in order to make that decision. The other reason to read the comics simultaneously with the books would be if you're interested in the Avar Kriss character. She is mostly a comic-only character after Light of the Jedi so most of her development will be in Marvel's High Republic book. Finally, I would not read Midnight Horizon without reading most of The High Republic Adventures (see our guide for which issue to stop on), as DJO writes both THRA and Midnight Horizon and his THRA characters play a significant role in the novel. Sorry for the longwinded response, but I hope that helps!

    • @MadmansKnowledge
      @MadmansKnowledge 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Star Wars Lads Yes, that does help! I finished Into the Dark, read the wave 1 comics according to your order, and I’m onto The Rising Storm. I did like that after reading the comics the opening crawl saying Avar Kriss is leading the fight against the Drengir made more sense than it would’ve otherwise.

    • @starwarslads
      @starwarslads  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The short stories are the least essential of all of The High Republic mediums. If you are interested in completing the entire High Republic collection though, there is a hardcover collection with all of The High Republic short stories coming out later this year. But for now, you can skip them.

    I’ve been waiting to binge the high republic phase 1 once it finished up but haven’t gotten around to it yet. As someone who wants to collect the TPB of every series. What would y’all say is the best TPB reading order with the adult, YA, audio drama and mid grade books?

    • @louisjackson02
      @louisjackson02 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      right now I have phase 1 books -> THR vol 1, THRA Vol 1, Monster at temple teak -> Phase 2 books -> edge of balance vol 1, THR Vol 2, THRA Vol 2, Edge of balance vol 2 -> Tempest Runner -> Phase 3 books -> Trail of Shadows, THRA vol 3, THR vol 3
      Will this order of books and TPBs make sense? and please give your own opinion on where the TPB should go for the best reading experience!

    • @starwarslads
      @starwarslads  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The best reading order would be: Light of the Jedi, A Test of Courage, Into the Dark, THR Vol. 1, THRA Vol. 1, The Rising Storm, Race to Crashpoint Tower, The Monster of Temple Peak, Edge of Balance Vol. 1, Edge of Balance Vol. 2, THRA Vol. 2, Out of the Shadows, Tempest Runner, THR Vol. 2. That’s a pretty straightforward reading order where you shouldn’t ever have to pause one of the books you’re reading to read a different one that crosses over. Where the reading order gets difficult to map out without reading individual issues within the TPBs and crisscrossing is at the end of Wave 2 and all of Wave 3. If you really don’t want to stop in the middle of a volume like we suggest in the video, then I would recommend continuing as follows: Mission to Disaster, The Fallen Star, Trail of Shadows, THRA Vol. 3, Midnight Horizon, and THR Vol. 3. THR Vol. 3 contains Eye of the Storm, which EotS #2 should be the absolute last thing you read in Phase 1. If you’re ok splitting up the volume, you can read the rest of THR main series right after you read The Fallen Star, and then read EotS after you’ve read everything else I listed. The other one that gets tricky is THRA Vol. 3. If you read it after Midnight Horizon, Midnight Horizon will spoil what happens in THRA 9-12. If you read it before you read Midnight Horizon, THRA 13 will spoil some of Midnight Horizon. So you’ll have to pick your poison there. Hope that helped!

    • @starwarslads
      @starwarslads  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'm glad the graphics helped! Neither Halcyon Legacy #1, nor Life Day is important to get the most out of The High Republic story. The comic after THRA #8-10 is THRA: Galactic Bake-Off Spectacular. It was a one-shot THRA comic by Daniel Jose Older. Thanks for watching!

      We usually buy single issue comics at our local comic book stores. When it comes to collected editions, you can get them from your lcbs, or another popular place to buy them are the websites instocktrades.com, cheapgraphicnovels.com, or organicpricedbooks.com.

    So, I thought I was going to get into HR stuff as soon as it was out..and it didn't happen. And now we're about 3 years or so into it... is it too late to start? And should I start with this way you recommended reading it? Also, probably going to get pretty expensive to have to purchase all of the books, comics, graphic novels, to get it all done. What would you recommend and where is the best place to purchase them all?

    • @starwarslads
      @starwarslads  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's not too late, but there's a lot more to cover now for sure. Check out our updated one that includes Phase I and Phase II (set 100 years before, a prequel era!)- th-cam.com/video/F1aTeSTW3tY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Fgcv5s6Iq4GmgzBl
      Used book stores and making use of your local libraries are your best bet. A lot of comics are often available digitally at libraries too! Hope that helps

    Hi, What is a trade paper back when it comes to comics?

    • @starwarslads
      @starwarslads  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good questions. A Trade Paperback is a collection of comic book issues in a singular volume. Usually Marvel trade paperbacks collect a total of 5 or 6 issues. For example, The High Republic Vol. 1 trade paperback collects The High Republic #1-#5. Trade paperbacks can be found at most bookstores, comic book stores, or online retailers like In-Stock Trades or even Amazon.

    I have started to reed The High Republic books and so far I have read the three adult novels; Light of the Jedi, Rising Storm, Falling Star. Then I read the first young adult novel, Into the Dark, and now I am reading Out of the Shadows.
    Are the other mediums like the comics and children’s books good or important for the overarching story enough to where I have to read them, or can I just skip those and only read the adult novels and young adult novels? This will help me decide if I should go into phase 2 after the last two young adult books, or if I should read all the material for phase 1.
    Also, is it recommended to read all the adult books first then go back and read the other material, or go in order of the story line?

    • @starwarslads
      @starwarslads  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We have a graphic in the video detailing the stories we feel are most essential to read, but in order to get the most enjoyment out of the initiative we'd recommend you at least read The High Republic Marvel run by Cavan Scott. If you are going to read Midnight Horizon (the third YA novel), then it is also highly recommended that you read The High Republic Adventures IDW line by Daniel Jose Older (who wrote Midnight Horizon as a bit of a capper to his comics). As for your last question, we highly recommend you follow the story timeline order rather than reading one medium at a time. All of the supplementary THR material (YA novels, JR novels, Audiodrama, Comics, Manga) usually tell stories that flesh out and enhance the time period around the Adult Novels.
