piston ring filer diy

  • I made this filer using a regular dremmel tool. The cutting disk sits at a perfect 90 degree angle to the board. And also cuts the ring at a 90 degree angle so both sides match perfectly after cut.
    *For the people that have never done this, you cut only one side. Not both. You want both sides of the rings to meet square. They come together when they heat up and they need to seal. Cutting them at an angle will cause excessive blow by. Also cut very little and measure multiple times on the cylinder bore until you get it right. Then use a tiny filler to deburre the ring end you worked on. There is a million youtube videos on how to do that.
    Good luck.

    Be cautious using this method as it can remove a lot of material quickly

    Not to be rude here, nice hack...but from the way the sparks were coming off, you were grinding the ring from inside to outside. Need to reverse that
    Just by putting the ring on the other side of dermal tool would work great

      That was a test old ring. Just to give a demo. No one files a ring with only one hand. Lol.

    What do people mean by filing from the inside to outside?

      On this video..judging by the grinding sparks from his point of view.. he's filing outward from the inner diameter of the ring.. The correct way is grinding inward towards the inner diameter of the ring..sparks should be coming towards him..

      What ever the cheap dremmel disks are. Which are way finer than the manual filers they sell for like 80 bucks and suck. You are only to remove very little and then measure your rings on the bore. I practiced with all rings to see how much I was removing. To my surprise, it doesnt take too much each pass, which is a good thing.

    Good one Mate! I was about to gap the rings for my race engine but the ring diameter at 4-5/8" is too big for my ring filer. Back to the shop to build your tool, thanks.

    You get a thumbs down for 2 reasons;
    1- your set up is filing from the inside to outside-WRONG!
    2- the ring needs to be squeezed so both ends of the ring get filed at the same time to keep them square with each other!

      You have no clue what you are talking about. You are not supposed to mess up both sides of the rings.

      POTCsIronMan actually Hoguer is correct. The link you provided even says so......”Remember to only file one end of the ring, and take care to avoid damaging any coating the ring may have.”

      @@hogueraleksander5868 I retract my previous statements . You only file 1 side indeed . My bad.
