Really one of the best videos . I’ve tried this trick to push back distortion on a kick and the lin algorithm have me the punch I was looking for . This is really powerful !
Thanks! I did this and then tried a transient shaper for comparison. On the song I’m working on, cranking the attack on a transient shaper got me there quicker and more fully, but this was something I’ve never tried! Great vid!
08:17 - "...now you know how to listen to compression..." by the way.... duuuude!!! you fucking nailed it! mission complete! what an approach! thank you!!!! :)
What would you do about the clipping and the newly introduced massive peak? How would you mix that into a track? Thanks for the video and great content!
Yes. With Parallel compression, you are not putting a compressor directly on your drum bus, you are only incorporating some of the compressed signal into your drum bus. This is not the same as adding 2 compressors to the snare, if thats what worries you.
Why is it that no matter what I do, my drums peak at obscene levels? I want to be able to mix at a loud volume, but if I keep the mix at "optimal levels of -15db" or whatever.... When monitoring on speakers or headphones can't hear anything I'm working on . Anyone??
Transient shapers are not threshold dependent. So no matter what volume the source it will mess with the transient. I suggest using them on complex transient rich instruments or 'loops' Compressors are dependent on threshold so I suggest using it as your go to control for volume. In short, if you can't get your compressor to work use a transient shaper
But I wonder when is better to use each one when the objective is to modify the envelopes, In this example the compressor threshold is very high to guarantee that the compressors always acts on the sound, so I imagine a transient shaper would be useful too.
Here I did an A/B for you: th-cam.com/video/S4XpM5cns30/w-d-xo.html As you can hear they don't give the same result. The tail and attack are just not as 'smacky'. So, use a transient shaper when a compressor can't do the job ;). Cheers
I’ve done this with similar sounding snare and so all of these outputs sound similar… unfortunately my speakers were monitor quality so the snares were busted in the end 😂
really good one of th better things i've seen on this but when you invited me to come over to yr channel you spoke so fast i couldn't hear it - captainbeats? catmanbeats? what theffff??
weird technique there. i dont tend to adjust the attack and release with the threshold that low, cos the release and attack times change with the threshold
Guido is great with explaining but his sense of humour is even legendary!
I enjoyed his course entirely. My favourite teacher.
the best practical explanation of drum compression I've ever seen
Great explanation on how to use a compressor.
3 1/2 of production and no one ever taught me how to use a compressor like this. Thank you my man.
this is the best compressor video ive seen on youtube, thank you
One of the best compressor video right here.
Thks Guido.
Thanks for showing me how to set up the compressor because this honestly has been my weakness.
Thanks for the help Lad 💯
i use fl and this was easy to follow thx man
incredibly helpful

Bedankt Guido 🎉
This was great, thank you
01:17 - I've sampled that and it's mine!!!!
hahahaha for real those snares are nice :)

you rock thank you ive been doing this for so long and you totally just gave me power!!!! one love my friend Massive lives deep
really best explanation on how does the compressor work!!! You are the rockstar!!!
You the man thanks buddy
"Sounds about right," actually it sounds awesome. Great advice and great video.
08:17 - "...now you know how to listen to compression..." by the way.... duuuude!!! you fucking nailed it! mission complete! what an approach! thank you!!!! :)
This is great, my beat slaps now
Well Explained. Thank You!
awesome tutorial man, i've been stuck on my snare for ages
You've really explained this so well. Thank you!
that makes a great difference thanks !
nice beat BTW
Brilliant! Thanks.
That was a really really good tutorial !
An awesome tutorial, thanks a lot for sharing your knowledge!!!
NICE VOCAL SNARE IMITATION
Thanks.
Thankss!!!!
Great tutorial, you break it down nice and clearly!
Thank you. That was super helpful.
thank you so much man, as always very very helpful! :) have a good one and hope to see more content from you soon
thx for that easy explained vid!
super tuto
I love when the top end smiles to me

Slam it into a master bus limiter like everybody else I guess 🤷♂️
u are fkn genius, thank u very much!
Can we get a tutorial for the drums of “waisted times” by The Weeknd please?
thank you !
Guido....thanks for this.....very helpful :)
eXo you are welcome :).
Question : is it ok to add parallel compression to an already compressed snare?
Great video :)
Yes. With Parallel compression, you are not putting a compressor directly on your drum bus, you are only incorporating some of the compressed signal into your drum bus. This is not the same as adding 2 compressors to the snare, if thats what worries you.
Very usefull tips :D
Nice little trick! I admit, am guilty of doing this! Still learning..
Atem S. Mixing is a b sometimes. Hope this little trick helps
Sure did! You just made me save so much time!

Would have been nice to see how the final result worked with a kick/bass combo.
Using a Transient shaper would make this easier? when to use compressor and when transient shaper?
rodzeroher a transient shaper is a compressor with very limited parameters, it basically does everything he did for you.
Transient shapers are not threshold dependent. So no matter what volume the source it will mess with the transient. I suggest using them on complex transient rich instruments or 'loops'

01:17 - Just a replay button for myself
hahaha -1dB does nothing indeed...that's for scared UAD customers middle aged men, living in fear!!!! Great tutorial!

nice dutch accent
Anyone here working in the genre of clicky sounds? :P
