The world is begging Adam to please Google regression to the mean.. or even progression to the mean, which will immediately redirect to regression to the mean.
I have a linguistics degree and just wanted to hop on and confirm that Adam is 100% wrong about his use of the word Regression. Yes Re is a Latin prefix that means to go back, but it has nothing to do with numbers being high or low or up/down. For example if you previously weighed 200lbs for the majority of your life and for a brief period dropped to 150lbs only to follow it up by going back to 200lbs you would say you've REGRESSED to your previous weight, because the number has reverted back to what it initially was. Adam seems to think "Re" means diminish or deteriorate but it simply means for something to go BACK to what it previously was. Which is where the term Regress to the mean comes from because it is referencing a number returning BACK to what it previously was... So if the number has gone BACK to what it previously was, then the proper way to classify it would be as a regression(cause RE means back), not progression because progression implies you have moved FORWARD and you can't move forward to a mean you've previously been at.
Blackhawks segment is an obvious example of just not knowing much about a non-Canadien team. The Blackhawks goal was never to win this season, and they didn’t sign guys this season to start winning. Richardson was fired because the young players already on the Hawks (Bedard, Reichel, Kurashev) have all regressed from last season when half of the roster was filled with actual AHL players. The Hawks have a worse record at this point this season than they did last year with a much worse team. Rebuilds usually take 5-6 years, and the Hawks are currently on year 3. How can you make a definitive statement on Davidson when none of the players he drafted are even on the roster yet. His first draft class (2022) hasn’t even hit the NHL yet. It’s far too early for this type of criticsm
Thank you Jesse for finally bringing up the meaning of regression to the mean omg. Adam's university-dropout-ass brain trying to argue against "regression to the mean" was giving me cancer.
Jesse backtracking from "the team is making the playoffs" to "actually Davidson sucks at his job" is... so deeply upsetting to have to listen to? We told you you weren't informed enough to think they'd be out of the bottom 8 or so. I think you're just not very informed? Davidson put together a roster good enough to fool you, no?
Adam: You'll have to wake up early and do it. Steve: I'm not waking up early, you wake up early. Adam: You wake up early. Steve: Jesse you wake up early. Jesse: I can do that, I don't mind. Your GOAT ladies and gentlemen, Mr Jesse Blake.
I said this before in Chicagos season preview, in the prior year I saw over half a dozen games live in Chicago. I saw a lot of Bedard to know that he’s the real deal, but he never scored a point or an assist in any game I went to. None of the games I went to lead to a win. This rebuild is fresh, it’s gonna take time because it’s earlier in the process than you think. Hawks haven’t been able to come close to any meaningful rebuild while they had toews and Kane. It’s new era, curb the expectations, and do everything you can to surround Bedard with the right talent and fill out the rest of the roster appropriately.
Trouba deserved it. The Rangers had the best season in franchise history and big part of that had to do with Trouba. He was a scapegoat, his partner makes a mistake on his and he gets blamed. A lot of the reason Trouba looked "bad" is because of the system Laviolette implemented. Trouba always had to be back when the opposing team was on the rush. Most blocked shots on the team, most physical defenseman, knew how to fire up the team. His intangibles were valuable to the team and most people don't realize it. His contract was bad sure, but that doesn't mean he didn't deserve the leadership award.
I thought we were safe from “regression” discourse when Jesse pulled up Wikipedia, but alas. It’s “regression to the mean” because it’s *going back* to average, not because stats people are bad at words. 😂💙
So I went to Blue Bovine ahead of Mondays game vs Hawks. Booked for 5:30PM. There were 4 of us. Basically ignored for 1.5 hours before being asked if we are ready to order. Also requested the bill at this time. Barely made it to our seats before puck drop.
I will point out you do need to be licensed for each individual state you practice medicine in. If you're already licensed in one, it should be relatively easy to get licensed in the other, but you do need separate licenses.
I honestly hate the Hawks section, as a longtime fan you guys got a lot wrong. Rocky was the best owner in the Wirtz family tree up until the last few years since the scandal broke. He honestly SAVED the franchise from being at it's absolute worst. I also don't think you're giving Kyle Davidson any handicaps coming into a tire fire set ablaze by Bowman... The scandal, cap space, lack of picks, he had to make INSANE decisions fast to restock the cupboard, try and build around Bedard, and go from there. You're painting Danny as some villain, and from how it has been, he isn't bad.
For the Chicago conversation, they have been leading, tied, or within 1 goal in all but one game this season. Richardson was running a defensive 1-2-2 dump and chase system, with a team that is not fast enough to rely on a single player to cause a disturbance on the forecheck, and players like Bert and Hall who thrive in a fluid chaos style instead of a rigid defensive system. So they never had the puck to generate offense. Bedard creates off the rush but the system has him dumping it in every time. He puts the lines in a blender every game, refusing to put Teuvo with Bedard, and the only productive line is the 4th because, surprise, it has stayed together. He was not putting Bedard in the optimal position to thrive, and that is still the most important aspect of this team, you CANNOT fumble this kid. Really hope Luke all the best and think he will land on his feet very soon, but change needed to be made (Vlasic said that unprompted pre-firing). My credibility? I've watched every second of this team this season on YARRR matey+
I not sure why Jessie is stating Trouba is a 6th defenceman when a 30 second search shows he was averaging 20 minutes a game. 3rd behind Adam Fox/Kevin Miller Keep your head up when crossing the blueline against the Ducks (Gudas & Trouba).
Being a head coach and having Barry trots as your boss is like being a drummer for the Foo Fighters and having Dave Grohl be your lead singer. And what did Taylor Hawkins do? He nailed it. No excuses. Let’s go!
Man, they keep saying Binnington over Montembeault and I just don't see it. For the last few seasons Sam has just been better. Hill is still the starter, but if you take Logan, you cut Jordan.
Sens are 3 points out of the WC… I don’t really know what people expect with these teams. They’re around .500, most teams in the East are mediocre. It’ll be interesting to see who ends on top. But clowning on a team when a single win can move them 5 places up in the conference seems weird to me
I’m the same as Steve with getting the wrong thing. I don’t eat meat. Few years ago at a Devils game I ordered veggie sliders, but was given actual meat. Preferred to just eat it over correcting them.
Well ladies and gentlemen, it happened again. As soon as this episode concluded, Jacob Trouba is now a Mighty Duck 🦆. I personally thought that the 8M$ would be a pain in the butt to move but Anaheim had the space. And shortly after that, Igor finally signed the big contract😅
Regress = go back to, implying that the measure in questions is going back to the mean. Works weather the object in question is above or below the mean. Regress to the mean, always.
The Trouba case is another reminder that if you're a player, don't accept ANY no-trade situation. Exclusively go for no-move clauses. Waiver protection (as a team negotiation tactic) is worth whatever small amount of total money you lose in the process.
Jeezus. Adam! Think of the mean as the starting point. It doesn't matter which way you go from it either way you get farther from it. Thus as you rebound towards it you regress. Yes even if you are below average you travled away from it and thus have to rebound or regress to it. Rather than above and below think of it as a line. You can travel any distance horizontally from that point but you must return to it. Thats Regression To The Mean.
KD said that we have to be better this year. We don't know what "better" means. Does it mean having more points and being out of the bottom 3-5? Or is more points, but last in the league still considered "better"? By bringing in Anders Sorenson he is hoping that is talent in developing young players will help the guys here. A lot of the young guys were coached by him in Rockford so he is hoping that familiarity will help. The issue with Bedard is that he has regressed and is way underproducing. Is it just a Sophomore Slump or is it something more? The chemistry with Kurashev is not there this year. Is that because they haven't played together very much? There is a lot going on that we just don't know and may never know, but those of us who have been through a rebuild before are patient. Also, it was pointed out by the CHGO guys that we got Toews and Kane at the end of that rebuild, all the surrounding players had been in the NHL for a while and had already developed into who we needed them to be. We got Bedard too early in this rebuild. If we got him a couple years from now, when more of the young guys have been moved to the NHL, it would be a different story.
Honestly I remember when we would go out as a family of 8 (my two oldest sisters moved out when I was about 8 or 9) we would get compliments about how well behaved we were as kids and (note this is before ipads at the resturant were a thing) im just thinking like "Well yeah if we don't behave we dont go out" simple as that. Like maybe its just a manners thing but we were always told to be on our best behavior cause we won't do something again otherwise.
Keefe hasn't been screaming much. He'll get on the refs like any other coach but in watching every game, I haven't seen him get much crazier than any other guy in the league.
Honestly its ur kid its fine. IMO Im only grossed out about sharing food/drinks with people outside my family/close friends but kids younger nephew etc its fine.
So I THINK the way it works in the states to be a medical doctor is U have to do the full 8 years (or whatever it is) in one state and u CAN'T transfer credits out of state. For example Trouba's wife is at a NYC university. She COULD transfer to a university in NY and still finish but if she were to transfer to say Columbus Ohio she would have to start from scratch. Does anyone know how many years she's in? If she's almost done I'd just take a quick live apart for a year or 2 then reconvene.
Would you rather be a millionaire in NYC or columbus OH? NYC has more things for them to do. The city has its own energy and more opportunities to expand out of hockey. Its the #1 media market.
I’ve been a fan of the Blackhawks my whole life. Mark lazerus nailed his article, and it perfectly described my feelings. No way I’m paying 20 dollars per month for ONE TEAM. And when they do have a national game, like they did on Wednesday, they’re so bad and boring that after the second period I opted for the Leafs game instead. It’s hard to be invested even when they are on tv because they’re bad and I know I wont be able to watch the next one anyway
I was trying to be nice but Adam's progression BS pushed me over the edge. He's wrong about just about everything and he's lucky that he's his mother's son and Steve is his best friend.
maybe one day their bias against Binnington will stop. 24-5-1 1.89 GA/G .927 SV% 30-13-7 2.57 GA/G .912 SV% 18-14-8 2.65 GA/G .910 SV% 18-14-4 3.13 GA/G .901 SV% (worst year, played bad and had the antics) 27-27-6 3.31 GA/G .894 SV% (best player on team despite numbers, bottom 5 defense and lost 5 players at deadline) 28-21-5 2.84 GA/G .913 SV% 8-9-2 2.87 GA/G .900 SV% ( take out the "1" game against the capitals his number go to 2.45 GA/G with a .910 SV%) For Adam to say he hasn't been good in a long time just tells me he doesn't watch or talk to anyone and just looks at stats Especially if you say his 27-27 3.31 .894% was his worst season because it's not he was amazing on a team that sold with one of the worst defenses in the league that year.
Oreilly is out week to week, and even if he wasnt, getting some second rate castaway center somebody doesnt want wouldnt be enough to save this season, but with him out probably until January it absolutely wouldnt be enough. We arent going to get someone better than oreilly, which means we wont be any better than we already have been
I wonder if Trouba’s notorious “Get out of the penalty box free” card was traded with him. As a Ducks fan, not a fan of the trade. Vaakanaian has been good, when they play him. Trouba’s a head hunter. He likes to deal out concussions, not legal checks. As Steve says on LFR, “Boo and hiss.” I wonder if they’ll bench him. Ducks are notorious the last couple of years for dumping their good to best players who have experience, especially UFAs or ones close to UFA. I was surprised when they not only got Gudas, but made him Captain. Hasn’t really been their MO. Rakell, Henrique, Carrick, Drysdale, Dumo, Lyubushkin… Most of the guys that could pass the puck regularly, and catch it, they passed on to other teams.
Have the Black Hawks organization ever not been terrible to their fans? The people that should be fired in Chicago are the GM and President, for putting a horrible roster around their "generational" player. This is kind of the expected results of continually shoveling in some guys who happen to be veterans (after selling off everyone with a pulse at the deadline), instead of the right kind of veterans to surround and mentor your player. Just look at the kind of roster that surrounded Crosby from day one and can see how this might have happened. The team around Bedard is so bad that other teams just double cover him to beat Chicago. Foligno is a guy you get to mentor someone on the 3rd line. You bring in a high skill veteran (was supposed to be Hall) to mentor your high skill player.
Steve: "Whoever gets Trouba isn't putting him on the first pairing"
The Ducks: "....well, actually.."
It happened again 😂 Trouba traded right after they record
never fails, right?
Obviously... That's the only reason the trade happened... loll
Amazing… I’m kind of impressed at this point
AND cherry on top: Shesterkin's deal!! 😂
@@ozma6918 That so much something the Rangers had in their pocket to drop just to kill the other news.
As a Halo Reach enjoyer and having spent my youth with it and Halo 3, I appreciated the description Steve built!
Dude. The New York Rangers officially posted the trade the same MINUTE this pod uploaded to YT.
The SDP jinx is very very real
At this point, it's not a jinx, it's trolling from the NHL teams!😂
Yeah I feel like GM's just wanna kick the Maple Leaf media in the crotch at every possible opportunity
The Friday podcast curse continues 🤣❤️
Let me guess the Trouba news didn’t make this Episode, Classic timing😂.
Yes the news they said was going to happen later in the day based on reports happened later in the day.
As is tradition the trade has broken after the boys finished recording.
Edit: AAAND Igor signed his new contract
😂😂 the timing is starting to be hilarious
i love how every time Adam talks about the Habs he pre-answers every possible montreal fan
The world is begging Adam to please Google regression to the mean.. or even progression to the mean, which will immediately redirect to regression to the mean.
No
It's like how the government releases bad news on late on Friday when most of the reporters have gone home.

Montembeault has the best save percentage of any of the three goalies named

During the playoffs last season Ranger fans on twitter were constantly complaining about Trouba. It took the organization a little longer to see it.
Missed the Trouba trade *and* the Shesterkin extension, helluva day, boys!
Thank you Jesse for finally bringing up the meaning of regression to the mean omg. Adam's university-dropout-ass brain trying to argue against "regression to the mean" was giving me cancer.
They keep on ripping on Montembault but the guy has 3 shutouts and plays with one of the worst defense in front of him.
I couldn’t be happier they picked him!

He really shows his educational background on that one....
I know Blackhawks don't have the requisite talent, but coaching change can do wonders. Just look at us.

Linguistically, the mean is the point of origin for a trend, so you *regress* by moving back towards it
“I’m not sure about the healthcare system in the states”….bit of a touchy subject right now Steve.
Yes,
MD's ,
Need different licenses for different states. So do the attorneys in the USA.
aside from the tortured simile of the video game...great pod.
I was trying to be nice but Adam's progression BS pushed me over the edge. He's wrong about just about everything and he's lucky that he's his mother's son and Steve is his best friend.
Poverty franchises continue to bend over backwards for big markets it’s so stupid
maybe one day their bias against Binnington will stop.
24-5-1 1.89 GA/G .927 SV%
30-13-7 2.57 GA/G .912 SV%
18-14-8 2.65 GA/G .910 SV%
18-14-4 3.13 GA/G .901 SV% (worst year, played bad and had the antics)
27-27-6 3.31 GA/G .894 SV% (best player on team despite numbers, bottom 5 defense and lost 5 players at deadline)
28-21-5 2.84 GA/G .913 SV%
8-9-2 2.87 GA/G .900 SV% ( take out the "1" game against the capitals his number go to 2.45 GA/G with a .910 SV%)
For Adam to say he hasn't been good in a long time just tells me he doesn't watch or talk to anyone and just looks at stats Especially if you say his 27-27 3.31 .894% was his worst season because it's not he was amazing on a team that sold with one of the worst defenses in the league that year.
That star thing is misleading tbh
The Chicago fire and FC Dallas do have stars in their logo, but their logo is not shaped like a star
