  • Paraprofessionals are an important addition to the school environment. They are often the silent helpers as teacher assistants. If you are lucky to have a paraprofessional work with you in the classroom or maybe you are training to to be a paraprofessional, these are the best practices that will work in the school setting!

    I’ve been subbing in a para position and I appreciated the information you shared. I always want to know what is expected of me and what they’d like me to do. If I am not informed of the expectation, its hard to do my job going in.

      Thank you for your post! We appreciate you and I thank you for doing the job. It is a hard job and I know expectations differ in a variety of areas of the work.

      How much do you get paid? I just got hired as a paraprofessional for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and they haven't told me how much the salary is yet. I don't even know what to ask for because I'm not sure what is a fair amount for the position.

      It depends on where you live. You should ask if they have not told you yet, it isn't smart to accept a job offer before knowing what your compensation is.@@don2672

    I’m exploring this as a new career, 15 years in the Army, 5 years as an EMT, just about to finish my bachelors in Coaching with a minor in public health. Ultimately i would like to be able to coach a sport and teach physical education but I don’t have a teacher certification and would need to do an alternate pathway but i thought this may be a good stepping stone while I figure out the rest.

      Yes, this would be an awesome stepping stone! You could find coaching opportunities and apply as soon as they come. I would start at the middle school level and work your way up. Thank you for your service, my dad and grandfather were both in the Army.

    This is my first year having a para in my classroom with me. I’m just trying to figure out how to be a good teacher/para team with them. Thank you

    I am a licensed nurse assistant who is looking into this job. I am still unsure.

      Try subbing first to see if it something you could enjoy. Try all grade levels and a variety of tasks and go from there. If you do find yourself a job in this area, one good thing about paraprofessional positions is that your aren’t “locked-in” to your contract for an entire school year. There’s more flexibility to leave if you find that it’s not a great fit.

    I have no real teaching background but when I was in college I wanted to be a special education teacher, I didn’t finished college due to some reason. But I did volunteer at a children church is it possible to still become a para without any real teacher/assistant background I would love to do so

    • @TeachLikeBianca
      @TeachLikeBianca  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes, it is possible. You would have to take a basic skills test or have at least 60 college credits. Each district may have their own requirements. But you can do it!
