      1:54. So many foremen and journeymen over complicate. They won't teach you the most efficient way because they don't want you to then do the job better. They don't want people after their job. Residential construction is usually straight forward, and shouldn't be that hard to teach. You're working with wood too, so it's not like you're drilling into metal studs with tech screws. And wood is easier to saw.

      Thanks guys feel lil smarter that i knew that, but really feel slow where something possibly flew over my head. He mentions that, to get the stud height(to be able to cut all studs one time ) you measure the height of the wall then add the thicknes of 3 plates (1 1/2 x 3 = 4/12 inches) and subract that amount from the measured height, to get stud height. This confused me, because if the stud fits between 2 plates why are we subtracting 3.
      So in my mind its like this, if i have a wall i measured 100 inches, i am making a frame to fit that,frame height is 100 inches also, now i subtract 4.5 inches from 100 = 95.5.. wouldnt that make the studs too short? . If the stud is to fit between top and bottm plate, shouldnt i be subtracting 1.5(top) +1.5(bottom plate) =3inch for a stud tight fit? .... i dont know if anyobdy follows what im trying to say. thinking i missed something,but keep replaying and still dont see it

    When you are doing the wall lay out, just a tip. You can always nail those 2 2x4’s together flush. Then go 15 1/4 and put a duplex or regular sinker, then attach the tape to that nail. Then go every 16 inches from there.

    When nailing the double top plate you do not need to nail it right at the studs, just off to the side a couple of inches or so.Your nails will not really penetrate the studs anyways because the thickness of the two plates is 3 "b and your nails would not usually be longer than 3-1/2". I would usually use a nail gun but you can hammer them in.

    • @DESIGNPEPO
      @DESIGNPEPO 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think the idea to screw above the stud is because if you put them in between the studs, then the electrician when make a hole through the two top plates may hit the nails with the drill bit.

    One shouldn't use screws to make walls. Screws resist pulling force, so they're good for deck boards which you don't want to pull up. but what walls need are sideway shear force, which means nails, which have a heavier head. I too used to make this mistake, until I spoke with an engineer. Never used screws on a roof deck. Some people think it makes roofs stronger, when actually it makes them weaker ot wind shear forces.

    • @HouseImprovements
      @HouseImprovements  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      As stated more then once in the video screws should not be used for framing and where used only for the demonstration of the video to assemble this wall which was disassembled after wards.

    First of all I do not recommend steel studs for basement walls. The moisture in most basement environments leads to rust and deterioration and some times failure in less that 20 yrs. Use a pressure treated bottom wood plate and spruce top plate and studs is better in my mind. Also Build the wall independent from the concrete wall and leave about a 1/2' - 1" space between the concrete wall and framing, and don't forget the moisture barrier. If you go to my youtube channel you can find more videos

    Hey I enjoy your videos on wall construction. I am building a 8 by 8 wall, it will have a door, a window in a AC window unit in the wall. I am using 2 by 10 lumber. I am about 3/4 inch out of square. I am in the early stages of the build so I am going to make sure it is square before I install the door. My question is if the wall is this much out of square (3/4) would that cause me a lot of problems down the road trying to square up the door and widow down the road?

    • @HouseImprovements
      @HouseImprovements  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends what "out of square" means to you? If you mean the diagonal is 3/4" difference then you will likely be fine. If the bottom plate is 3/4" out of square to the end of the wall you may have trouble if your rough openings are not an inch wider then the frames. Not really ,but you will want the wood to still be flush to the face of the steel stud surface.

    The volume on the video is really good, are you sure your volume on the video tool bar is turned up? When you hover over the speaker symbol the volume adjustment should come up briefly.

    Depending where you are, code may call for that, my code calls for that only if you are building a load bearing wall that will not have any sheathing,drywall or angled strap. It may also be required for fire blocking if you were balloon framing more than one story.

    This is an extremely beginner tutorial, so why is it that so many houses aren't even built as correctly and as carefully as this example framing was. The moral is either pay through the nose for a very good contractor who doesn't cut corners or build it yourself!!

    Good video. I have a question. How do I lift a newly framed wall inside of and existing room. I have a 16x23 room and I want to go to a corner and frame in a bath room. I can frame the walls door etc. but if I frame it to the existing room height can I lift it into place without messing up the existing ceiling? Or should I leave the top plate off and raise the wall, then hope i can put the top plate in place???

      Honestly I prefer to "stick frame" in those situations. Install you top and bottom plates in place and cut and install studs in the standing wall. If you want to build it on the floor and stand it up cut studs about 3/8" shorter than needed.

      A lot of planning goes into an ordinary bathroom, but the one your building is far greater. I am guessing you have a basement. I am doing a bathroom on the second floor that was a large bedroom with no bathroom. I thought the prices of lumber were going to fall. COL. Anyway interior walls with finished ceilings is tough. I decided to remove the sheetrock in the new bathroom area. Needed spacers between ceiling joist to attach new walls. Also exhaust fan and recessed lighting and wiring and vent piping. I also removed the flooring to double floor joist by tub and 16 foot interior wall. The wall runs parallel to a wall below it but I think it would be stronger if it was perpendicular, to floor joist. I had done work like this for a living, many years back and only used douglas fir wood. Almost impossible to build a straight wall using anything else but steel. I am turning 71, and started saying this was my last project five years ago. Good luck.

      I really wanted to mention that a bathroom "wet wall" (has the largest, and most fixtures in a row) is generally framed in 2 X 6 lumber. There is a formula, for what is called "fixture vent sizing tables". Most bathrooms need a 3 or 4 inch vent going thru roof. 3 inch is the inside measurement and 3.5 od . Hole saw would cut your floor and ceiling plate in-half. Even 2 X 6 lumber requires metal pipe protectors, preventing accidental nail penetration's. Very easy to hit vent pipes, hanging pictures with screw gun. The entire pipe is difficult to protect buried in the wall.

    if the wall is going from floor to ceiling, how do you attach the over hang top plates at the corner? the ceiling prevents you from drilling down like you did in the video.

    Leaving that top plate of and building the wall also about 1/4" shorter than needed will help you out. Assuming that this wall is not needed for support of the joists.
    Add some blocks of 2x4 between the joists every 4' or so and then attach wall to these.

    Why did he point out right to left, does it matter? He simply needed to say what he was measuring with his tape. Many hand gestures too which were unnecessary. The way they pan the camera was out of place as well.

  • @Lawless187indika

    Needs some help, im sure i missed something important.
    So in my mind its like this, if i have a wall i measured 100 inches, i am making a frame to fit that,frame height is 100 inches also, now i subtract 4.5 inches from 100 = 95.5.. wouldnt that make the studs too short? . If the stud is to fit between top and bottm plate, shouldnt i be subtracting 1.5(top) +1.5(bottom plate) =3inch for a stud tight fit? .... i dont know if anyobdy follows what im trying to say. thinking i missed something,but keep replaying and still dont see it
    Update: Okay after rewatching , i noticed he uses a double top plate(assuming the wall is load bearing>?) anyway, is it safe to assume this is what i overlooked?.. guessing thats why he subtracted 3 thicknesses?

    im building a shack/shed out of scraps nothing with be standard code. everything will be 2x8 or 2x10 laying flat or or standing sideways. why not its a 6x 8 room one load wall will be 3- 2' x 10' and the rafters will be 2" x 12" x 10`laying flat how unconventional but why not it covered by 1/2 or 3/4 plywood .

    Great vid. As a point of clarification, is my math right if I say that the first stud of the wall (on the end) and the second stud will be less than 16 inches on centre? It seems to be 16 inches from the end of the baseplate to the centre of the second stud.

    • @HouseImprovements
      @HouseImprovements  10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes that is correct. Every wall will have the first space and also the last space less than all the other regular spaces

    You seemed to indicate that the impact driver has a hammer function in the drill. But isn’t this untrue? Doesn’t it have a hammer motion which applies to the rotation?
