You can tell river was propper pissed when the audience laughed at his siblings' names. Idiots! He was probably trying hard not to give them the finger
It hurt me when the audience started laughing at rivers siblings names, I think those names are lovely. Such beautiful names and well thought and chosen. And poor River had to try and ignore it. These are beautiful well thought names they should not of been laughed at.
@@shannonelyse9829 those were plain stupid names. we shouldn't pretend its ok to name a child after a bird or a physical location. I would have laughed too.
This discussion is still so relevant... after how many years?! And for how many years longer are we gonna be having the same debate, this shouldn't even be an isssue!
honestly we can talk and talk and talk all day but until we DEMAND change with voting, protesting, coming together and doing it yourself or whatever else. change is not gonna come. you cant have change just for being polite and asking. we have to stop asking and start demanding or else its over for us all.
I met him back in 92''..he was such nice guy, i had a nice conversation with him in gainesville fl, and he was very real..I remember talking about music and how he was about to go on a trip to south america, his hopes were to help conserve the amazon...He was very nice to talk too
lol I'm sorry nobody can convince me of going vegan..if you starve a vegan for a week and put a plate of veggies and water in front of them, and a other plate with a double cheese burger and fries I doubt they're going to attack the veggie plate first...
@Lisa Surlie I wonder what you're doing here commenting on negative things if you don't like river phoenix I remind you that there is too much content on TH-cam which you can watch. Good vibes❣️✌🏼
pam0626 yes! It’s a breath of fresh air really! You see so many people now going vegan for a diet (trying to lose weight) or because everyone is because it’s “in style” now. River genuinely cares for our animals and environment
Eden Everly I understand and respect what you are saying about celebrity worship. I’m by no means crediting River for coming up with the concepts he’s discussing here. I’m just saying that he was one of the few A-list celebs willing to embrace them so openly in the early 90’s. Way, way ahead of his time. It would take Hollywood another 15 years to start the conversation about global warming with the 2006 documentary An Inconvenient Truth and another ten years before veganism would become normalized with celebs like Oprah, Beyoncé taking it mainstream.
I've seen people call River a hypocrite, but the fact is he was into these foods and telling the public of different lifestyles, not for an agenda but for the ANIMALS. So he wasn't really a hypocrite, he just wanted to let the animals live in peace & have their rainforests and stop being killed in masses... he was very sensitive to it. Oh, and of course people too, he cared about people... his drug use was not hypocritical, it was just an escapism I suppose... a silly one but he doesn't deserve to be called a hypocrite, because he is not!
Zelda Zonkin' have you seen how cocaine is made and the damage it does to the environment? he's a little bit of hypocrite... watch the bbc video on it. really crazy stuff.
Thomas Bird At that age, you are still trying to figure yourself out and choose sides. He was exposed to drugs all his life, at home, in the cult, and in Hollywood. He also tried to incorporate his parents hippie views into his own belief system. I think he was trying to 'find himself', to get all cliche' on you. He was also under tremendous pressure to support the entire family, and in dealing with his father's abandonment of the family. (He moved to South America permanently) I tend to think that if he had lived longer, he would have become a person with a belief system that was more cohesive. All we can do now is wonder.
I don't think River would have become an atheist, he was open about believing in Jesus as late as 1992 etc. But he certainly was exposing the Children of God cult that he grew up in. He told reporters he lost his virginity at 4 or something like that. :( I think he was a dreamer and spiritual but he had no chance to just be himself. He was the bread winner, a pin up, he just wanted to do music and direct. He did plan to leave Hollywood but he had to do a few more movies to get secure money wise for his family.
Thomas Bird Actually, River DID speak about his beliefs and mentioned Jesus. In an interview with Keanu Reeves he gave thanks to Jesus Christ, and Keanu said 'Amen'. He also mentioned elsewhere that he believed in something other than the here and now, he said just the thought of how his parents met proved to him there was destiny, a God, whatever it is. I will find the interview for you. He was pretty spontaneous and open with interviewers while he was with Keanu because they were friends and put each other at ease I guess. Someone they knew died in a car wreck and River said 'Gold bless his soul'. It's not about 'coming to sense', that's pretty insulting. Joaquin has siblings who believe in God, who believe River is living on in Spirit. River's sister Rain who was in his band, they wrote songs together, she was there when he died, she believes in God/spirituality, she posts about her brother. Joaquin may not believe, he might just say that to the press. Everyones different... it's nothing to do with sense. :) Oooh,I found the quote. It was an interview with INTERVIEW magazine, here it is. 1991, November Issue. So he'd be alive for 2 years after this. "But, seriously, we know what it's like to be on the bottom. The Lord Jesus Christ has given us a chance to be on top. So we're not going to abuse it. We're going to be very thankful for it and gracious about the luck that we had in our positions. We're very lucky young men. We do what we want, we get to be creative and make money." - River Phoenix www.interviewmagazine.com/film/my-own-private-idaho/#page5
Well, since he died at 23 we shall never know what he would have or could have done. It's pointless, but I'd say during his lifespan he was a believer for the most part. Everyone has their doubts, but I think from what we know he was a spiritual person. Sure, people say God bless all the time, so cut that as one of my examples, but the Jesus Christ comment was a bit more than that. I am not in a religion by the way, so don't take this as me trying to make River like me. but it's safe to say through my years of following him he leant towards a God/spirituality. And just because he had started using heroin during Idaho doesn't mean he would then be into supernatural beliefs, you don' have to be on drugs to believe in things. It's so insulting to act like people who believe in God or an afterlife or spirituality are just idiots not awakened to the truth. It really is.
Lisa is incredibly impressive and ahead of her time here. I'm glad to see people here acknowledge River for that as well, but Lisa shouldn't be overlooked.
i always knew who river was growing up because i grew up watching stand by me & indiana Jones but only 3 years ago i became a very strong fan of his. he is literally my everything. i’m so thankful for him because without him i wouldn’t be vegan his words inspired me so much.
Ive been looking into Lisa Bonet recently and im so impressed by her in this. She's so young but speaks so confidently and seemingly does a great job at ignoring snarky remarks and giggles about her views
why were they laughing at the names? :O Those are the most beautiful/Cool names i've ever heard...if i ever have a son im gonna name him River or if its a Girl im gonna name her Rain.
Lisa Surlie shut up and go away. i saw one of your comments talking about how you blamed him for your drug addiction. its not even rivers fault so fuck off.
River was such a beautiful soul... I got to knw abt him last yr... Since then I fell in love with him, Kind heart ❤ love him, I wish I could thank him for being kind to every kind❤
RIP River and Raul. I know River would be so proud of Joaquin still being a HUGE ARA and VEGAN. Can't wait for his latest movie to come out....The Joker.
What I love about River Phoenix is how humble and down to earth he was. If anyone could have walked around acting like they were the shit and gotten away with it, it would have been him because he seriously was that great. But the fact that he did not conduct himself that way is what made him so special and easy to admire
These three were planting early seeds that have come to fruition. It's amazing that we are still having the same conversations 20 years later I think the 80's were the beginning of the imbalance and now things are so obviously tilted at a precarious angle that it's reaching a critical juncture.
well I for one think she's amazing for being able to deliver this message to an audience that was critical of her choices. good day to you, and no i didn't see how long ago your comment was
Thanks for posting this! I thought it was quite rude of the audience to laugh at his sibling's names and it showed in his face. It's also funny to hear them talk about Global Warming, didn't even realize it was a subject of interest back then.
I watched this episode all the way through, and there were moments when Lisa Bonet took flack for not vaccinating her child. I guess in 1990, vaccines were widely-accepted by the public. Boy, have things changed since that time.
OMG 🤦♀️ Is there protein in your diet? the host asks Lisa. EVERY VEGETABLE HAS PROTEIN! Vegans and other people who include whole foods (as compared to unhealthy processed fast foods) in their diet have enough protein! Lisa was so ahead of her time, I admire her holistic approach!
River Phoenix looks like a blond young Johnny Depp XD (yum!). I love Raul Julia, especially for his work on the Addams Family :D RIP, there are not great actors like this anymore! And Lisa is SO gorgeous.
Never heard Raul Julia outside of his film roles, I like his natural accent. Lisa Bonet is so beautiful, and River Phoenix just had that timeless factor like James Dean. All the panel are so well informed, I wish modern day celebrities were as caring...
this is so cool I'd love to see more episodes of this show on you tube. Talk shows should be available on Hulu, I love seeing how people think and what life was like in the past.
wow Raul Julia. what a great guy. I recall him being very active in his cause. Not to mention a very talented actor who went before his time. AND river phoenix! Also talented but he self destructed. Poor guy. RIP gentlemen
Lisa was an incredible being way back then@22...she is my role model for growing and starting my lockes ...now, if only I can get my body to be as fit as her's @over 40
I became a vegetarian because of River I'm working on becoming vegan now I've been vegetarian for 10 months now. I hope i can give up milk and dairy soon it's kinda hard since i love milk products
2021 we are still war mongering and destroying our environment talking about the same things. I wish River is Phoenix is still alive. He’s such a beautiful soul. The world has lost a beautiful person.
I don't think he hated doing this interview at all. River was all about spreading awareness of environmental issues and the horrors and corruption of the meat industry and the like. He probably preferred this over being interviewed about his movies or his life as a celebrity.
Donahue is a trip! hilarious. Lisa Bonet sounds exactly like a gal i was once engaged to marry. 2 vegans with the same mentality. you know what? they were both correct. ignorance isn't bliss, it's just disgusting.
Thomas Bird my comment was meant to poke fun at meat eaters high risk for heart disease. you clearly have never spent anytime researching veganism to actually think its unhealthy is absurd. btw its impossible for real omnivores/carnivores like lions to get heart disease but human's do hmmm maybe we shouldn't be eating meat
Thomas Bird you said it yourself we have sweat glands that a herbivorous trait btw carnivores pant to reduce heat. meat had nothing to do with the evolution of our brain your joking right, you want to trust a caveman's diet over what we know is healthy haha just because we have been doing something for a while doesn't mean its healthy come on and animals we eat today are selectively bread to be fat as fuck and I doubt your chasing down an animal for 2 days across a tundra are you? that Austrian study you referenced has a lot of problems with it, It’s a cross-sectional study means it looked at habits and disease rates at one point in time. We don’t know how long any of the subjects were following their diet or why. Many people who go vegetarian do so because they are experiencing health problems and most importantly the subjects weren't controlled Since there was no actual dietary assessment, there was no way to know what these subjects were really eating One important thing that the researchers did not share in their discussion was that this was actually their second study on the health of vegetarians. Their first study came to completely different conclusions. That research gathered data from 15,474 people who participated in the Austrian Health Interview Survey. It found better self-reported health among the vegetarians as well as the omnivores who ate lots of fruits and vegetables. In fact, they concluded that public health measures are needed to reduce the health risks associated with “carnivorous” diets. I guess the website you picked the study from didn't tell you that part lol wow what a waste of 10 minutes though fuck
Thomas Bird yes no studies you wont be able to read some unless you have an account and you grabbed that from a website meant to confuse people about healthy dietary habits and of course to tell dumb people good things about their bad habits seems like your bordering conspiracies more. the study was comparing processed meat to unprocessed meat the study concluded unprocessed was less likely to give you heart disease YOUR STILL AT RISK FOR HEART DISEASE eating meat omg did you even read it come on man processed meat just had a little more of what kills you. you obviously just read the title and said good enough for me copy and paste www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23... www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11... www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24... www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22... www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19... www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24... www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18... www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22... www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22... www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19... www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16... www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16... www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21... www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/14... www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/artic... www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/90... www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20... www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23... onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10... onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10... www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20... www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21... www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16... www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16... www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24... www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19... www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19... www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22... www.bioscience.org/2011/v16/a... www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19... www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/artic... www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22... www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18... www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25... www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23... www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19... www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15... www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?t...
Thomas Bird way to not refute what I said by the way the study like I said clearly contradicts your claim so thanks for that. I wasn't downplaying the Harvard study because it fucking supports my claim I was downplaying the website even though the author said he eats a plant based diet omfg you are to dumb to fuck please get a vasectomy. im not saying meat will instantly kill you it works over time chronic disease don't build up over weeks or months, your also making an appeal to nature argument it has no value in a real argument. "think winning an argument with a smart person is hard? try wining against a stupid person" that quote is how I feel right now this was fun I know you will reply try not to make it to stupid to the point where I will feel the need to reply again please its Friday I need to live my life
What a beatifull person inside out. Such young yet so wise. Why the audience is laughing at the names of the siblings? They are poetic... The names l mean. 💕
I'm a vegetarian, but there are eggs in Pasta LISA! I know back then there was no such thing as dairyless Pasta or wholegrain, we just got it on the market in the 2000's. Also, why would they laugh at River's sibling's names, that made him look so sad. Jerks.
Listening to this a decade later gave me goosebumps. RIP River..... Some people die before their full potential of greatness. JFK Jr. was one too but River was deep.
R.I.P. River Phoenix and Raul Julia! Lisa Bonet did not have her daughter vaccinated and Chloe grew up just fine... hmm. She also has been eating organic for years.
We have an economy built around war and Christmas. Sad but true statement. It's insane to me that adults don't want to see the truth. We all know that animals are raised in terrible conditions until they are killed inhumanely yet people don't want to think about it. If someone treated their pet like these animals are treated they would stop it immediately. People are brainwashed to think it's ok to kill animals for food because they don't have an emotional attachment to these animals. I hope the new generation wakes up and things begin to change.
Yeah, money reigns regardless to anything else. I kinda hate the world we have to live in now. Although I don't share all their opinions I strongly realize that we desperately need more River's, Lisa's, Raoul's, Michael Stipe's. I'm sure they are here, but as you said - god damn singing competions, commercials and bullshit fills the TV...
You can tell he absolutely hated doing that interview. I wish someone was there for him to speak for him, take care of him. Someone should have noticed that he wasn't comfortable with what he was doing.
@1221solstice2012 I agree with you, River was such a unique person, I am very sad that he died, I am every single day! He was like no other human that I have seen before, he was incredible. I love all the people that care for this world very much and are Vegans are Vegetarians. They are inspiring, The rate of unsaved non believers is what is hurting this world most of the time. (my opinion)
I've noticed some people went on about Lisa being a vegan. Lisa is not a vegan. She did an interview with Vibe and the interviewer said she ate a salmon entree and liked it so much she ordered it twice. Lisa was like 22 here. Did anyone think she'd stay a strict vegan for over 20 years?? ALL vegans turn to animal products eventually. Lierre Keith, the author of The Vegetarian Myth was a strict vegan for 20 years and her body & health is messed up because of it.
As Rain Phoenix says in "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues", "What do you mean, drugged? Every living thing has a chemical composition, and anything that is added to it changes that composition. If you eat a cheeseburger or a Three Musketeers bar, it changes your body chemistry. The kind of food you eat, the kind of air you breathe, can change your mental state. Does that mean you're drugged?"
River had such a soothing calm voice! It's a shame to not be able to hear it anymore.

you are sexy
R.I.P. Raul and River.
Sadly in a few short years, both Raul and River would be dead :(. May they be resting in peace!
River was a very beautiful man, inside and out.
River carrys him self so well, very wise
I miss Raul and River.
wow Raul Julia. what a great guy. I recall him being very active in his cause. Not to mention a very talented actor who went before his time.
AND river phoenix! Also talented but he self destructed. Poor guy.
RIP gentlemen
Lisa was an incredible being way back then@22...she is my role model for growing and starting my lockes ...now, if only I can get my body to be as fit as her's @over 40
Did you listen to what she was saying in this interview? that's way more important than her outfit!
Oh wow! Thanks so much for putting this up! I never saw it . This is good quality too. I'm going to send it to some friends...
5 Stars!
Wow, what an amazing video !!! My gosh I wish I had heard them back then and probably would have gone vegan earlier !! ~♡
I became a vegetarian because of River I'm working on becoming vegan now I've been vegetarian for 10 months now. I hope i can give up milk and dairy soon it's kinda hard since i love milk products
Great panel.
river will always be my fave actor RIP
River phoenix knew even back then. He was going to change the world
When are we going to change?
What a great actor Raúl Julia truly was.I wished i could have seen him in Don Quijote de la Mancha. RIP.
Beautiful names
How many have gone vegan since this time in 1990?....not enough.
Thomas Bird ya because heart disease is natural
Thomas Bird yes no studies you wont be able to read some unless you have an account and you grabbed that from a website meant to confuse people about healthy dietary habits and of course to tell dumb people good things about their bad habits seems like your bordering conspiracies more. the study was comparing processed meat to unprocessed meat the study concluded unprocessed was less likely to give you heart disease YOUR STILL AT RISK FOR HEART DISEASE eating meat omg did you even read it come on man processed meat just had a little more of what kills you. you obviously just read the title and said good enough for me copy and paste

"think winning an argument with a smart person is hard? try wining against a stupid person" that quote is how I feel right now this was fun I know you will reply try not to make it to stupid to the point where I will feel the need to reply again please its Friday I need to live my life
Phil Donahue was the greatest. We sure do need him now.
* « I'm Not Vegan But I Loved River !!!!!!!! »
100 % X3
Pretty cool seeing River Phoenix & Raul Julia on the same show
such icons! river made me vegetarian since 6th grade
Scary how celebrities were telling the world this 30 years ago but nothing is changing
Can't believe the idiots in the audience would laugh at the very beautiful names of his very beautiful siblings 😡😡
INCREDIBLE INTERVIEW (complete)
What a beatifull person inside out.
Such young yet so wise.
Why the audience is laughing at the names of the siblings? They are poetic... The names l mean. 💕
@ThePomiget1
I think they are laughing at River's siblings names,
How dare they!!
I think they all have beautiful names!
Shame that two of those three are no longer with us (Raul Julia & River Phoenix). Both of them died about 3-4 years after this was filmed.
I'm a vegetarian, but there are eggs in Pasta LISA! I know back then there was no such thing as dairyless Pasta or wholegrain, we just got it on the market in the 2000's. Also, why would they laugh at River's sibling's names, that made him look so sad. Jerks.
Yah that was very rude
No! Not all pasta has egg
Stella Apple sorry to tell you that YOU ARE THE JERK as well. You can make pasta without diary.
Actually there are pastas that don't have eggs, just see the ingredients
@RisingScorpius thank you for uploading this :)
Listening to this a decade later gave me goosebumps.
RIP River.....
Some people die before their full potential of greatness. JFK Jr. was one too but River was deep.
River 💗🙏hermoso descansa en paz
River. My sweet older brother from another mother ❤
*-* IN MEMORY OF RAUL, FROM HIS BUTTERFLY.
great episode.
We've got an economy built on war and Christmas.
Well said. Watching 8/24 more relevant than ever.
I hope the new generation wakes up and things begin to change.
they believe it has to be this way
Yeah, money reigns regardless to anything else. I kinda hate the world we have to live in now. Although I don't share all their opinions I strongly realize that we desperately need more River's, Lisa's, Raoul's, Michael Stipe's. I'm sure they are here, but as you said - god damn singing competions, commercials and bullshit fills the TV...
Strange random group of actors they brought together.
Love river. Phoenix. He. Was. Amazing. Actor. And. So cute. Miss him
You can tell he absolutely hated doing that interview. I wish someone was there for him to speak for him, take care of him. Someone should have noticed that he wasn't comfortable with what he was doing.
River would have been up there with Johnny Depp.
Better than Depp. Depp killed him
@1221solstice2012
I agree with you,
River was such a unique person, I am very sad that he died, I am every single day! He was like no other human that I have seen before, he was incredible.
I love all the people that care for this world very much and are Vegans are Vegetarians. They are inspiring, The rate of unsaved non believers is what is hurting this world most of the time.
(my opinion)
Lisa and River are waaaaaay ahead of their time, and I mean at least 50 years…
all three of them really had so much wisdom beyond their years.. now in 2023, lisa is the only one alive. so sad
So much bullshit you’re talking ..
Salute to all they know the truth.
