The world should be thankful that he survived the holocaust and experienced not only his talent as a gifted pianist and gifted man of comedy who was able to know how to make people laugh not at a joke but life. Robert Merrill was an excellent vocalist and seeing them both together brought back to me wonderful memories.
Victor Borge was a gifted and brilliant pianist. He could have easily stuck to the well worn path of performing as a concert pianist but, thankfully, he chose to add humour to his music and made it accessible to millions more. His wonderfully expressive face and great delivery and timing - plus his creativity- capped it off and kept us laughing. My father was a gifted pianist and Victor Borge was his favourite performer. I’m thankful he was able to see him perform in person. 🎹
I really consider it a shame that young cell phone handicapped 'whatever' generations are not aware of Victor Borge's classical music. After so many years I keep finding things he did. They are funny and inspiring.
VICTOR BORGE - a musical comedyGENIUS! There will never ever be another of his ilk! I had the privilege of ushering many of his shows at the Syd Opera House over the years & never found him anything but superb & never got tired of his musical skits! I have his CDs & play them over & over - they light up & make my life more complete! Victor - this earth was lucky to have you on it - U made it a better & more beautiful place to live! With all my love 💕💕
Seriously one of, if not the, greatest performer of all. A virtuoso of piano who did more to educate people to the beauty of classical music, and get a laugh on the way. And with the best performers working as the straight man to his forced buffoon. I am in awe of him.
I loved Victor Borge in my younger days, some time passed by with Elvis Presley showing up, now at the age of 85 discovered him again, I am enjoying him now more than ever. What a genius, I'm still laughing at his humour, I can look at him over & over and still laugh out loud. I miss his presence from the earth with a sore heart, I look forward to seeing him again on Earth restored ❤
I have my own Autumn Leaves story: I was in high school and giving a performance of Autumn Leaves. I had told the ‘stagers’ during rehearsal not to throw leaves during my singing since they could not make them flutter gently to the stage. As I began, I heard splats! Yes, they were behind the screen throwing leaves. My mother was in the audience. We looked helplessly at each other as I had no choice but to continue my set! I love Victor Borge and laugh myself silly whenever he does this bit. No, it wasn't so funny back in 1955.
He Was Incredible. I sang at his synagogue many times and we got to know each other a bit. He came to me after the High Holy Days and complimented me on my singing. He figured out by my name that I Wasn't Jewish and he kidded around with me about that. In fact I was trained by a Cantor to sing in Hebrew. Bob said something to me that I will never forget. I understood exactly what he meant when he said that my singing was Excellent, and very moving. He told me that my singing had heart and meaning and that I sang as though I carried the 4000 years of Jewish persecution in my soul. ! I will never forget him. He also joked with me and I with him about singing the US National Anthem....he famously forgot the words once, I think at Yankee Stadium. I also was called upon to sing the National Anthem at many ceremonies on Long Island. He would ask me if I forgot the words yet? Great memories!
He had a lot of experience. Before his opera career he worked the 'Borscht Belt' in the Poconos as straight man to Red Skelton and Danny Kaye. They all remained friends for life.
Such a beautiful composition & such control, two exemplary musicians. I'm not sure if I could have played my flute with such finesse & not laugh with Victor Borge. 🎉
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Sono stupito e profondamente emozionato! Ho tante opere liriche cantate dal grandissimo Robert Merrill, ma non ho mai avuto il piacere di vedere questo cantante! Ora, grazie a questo video, so come era! Fantastico! Voce incredibile. Addirittura più coinvolgente che nelle registrazioni discografiche!!! Grazie per questo preziosissimo documento ✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️
Thankyou so much for a good laugh, this was priceless humour, why oh why can’t somebody do something similar, no smut, no bal language, just clean, innocent humour, but oh so funny, thankyou Victor, for hears of laughs! Australia
Mr Merrill “endured” this willingly. Prior to being a member of the Met, His prior experience involved performing on the Borscht Belt circuit, in movies, etc. IMHO Robert Merrill and Victor Borge were perfect foils for one another. The humor was superb.
If you told me the Robert Merrill was Robert DiNiro's brother, I might believe you, except that Merrill never used filthy language to describe people with whom he disagreed, politically. Merrill never knowingly gave offense. DiNiro does not care who he offends.

Opino igual, podría haber seguido sólo su carrera como concertista, pero era mucho más, un grande!!!
Aloha hienz57 says hey yeah wow long live the truth

My compliments on being 17 and wise enough to appreciate Victor Borge.

How Robert kept a straight face and kept singing through this is beyond me! I would’ve been rolling on the floor with tearful laughter.
That thought crossed my mind as well. We certainly know Mr. Merrill can perform Autumn Leaves with or without Mr. Borge accompanying him on the piano.
Merrill was mainly facing the audience, so his chances of keeping a straight face were greatly increased.
Amazing that someone so incredibly talented as a pianist was also incredibly talented as a comedian. First in his class in both fields.
The amount of talent to do this is crazy! The timing is everything
Victor Borge wasn’t good. He was magnificent! No better word to describe him.

My life...is now richer...thank you!
Боже! Надо же быть таким талантливым: блестящий музыкант! А чувство юмора:каждое движение шедевр - хохма! Виктор, вы чудо!
This skit has everything! Classical music, comedy and I absolutely love Autumn!
A fine performance by these two grand artists! RIP.
Fantástico, humor e música:duas coisas que amo 😂❤

Wow! Never heard of Robert MERRILL but he has a terrific voice!!!
Genius. Talent and humor in one place👏🎶💝
Gotta love Victor, but a serious hat tip to Mr. Merrill for doing a superb job of playing this straight and not losing it.
I’ll cherish this video for the rest of my life!🎉❤ 🥰🤩🥳🫠

Robert Merrill is both a good sport and great straight man!
He had a lot of experience. Before his opera career he worked the 'Borscht Belt' in the Poconos as straight man to Red Skelton and Danny Kaye. They all remained friends for life.
He makes me think of an old movie star Clifton Webb, he is the spitting image!!!!!
Victor Borgh was a genius. His exquisite playing and fooling around kept us all spellbound. What an artist!!!!
Om
God I miss this kind of comedy!
I saw him at the Hollywood Bowl Late 60's.Wonderful show!!

Not only was Mr. Borge a treasure, he bore a strong resemblance to my dad. Both men dedicated to their craft. ( Music, and Medicine.)
I’ve been laughing at this for decades. I still find it hilarious 😂
I had never seen this before. Victor Borge was always one of my favorites and Robert Merrill was such an incredible talent.

How he kept a straight face while singing, I shall never know.
Anything he does is hysterical !
Victor Borge could push a gag farther than any other comedian and still keep it fresh and funny.

Jokes aside, If only Robert Merrill recorded this song. His voice is just perfect for it.
All of that with no sheet music.

Such a beautiful composition & such control, two exemplary musicians. I'm not sure if I could have played my flute with such finesse & not laugh with Victor Borge. 🎉

Einer der besten Pianisten im Universum ❤
I saw him once and there was never a dull moment. I love the routine he did with his son playing the idiot page turner.

Because the world is no longer this innocent.
ABSOLUTELY classic!!!!!!!!!
Someone in (I believe it was) The Piano Technician's Journal say "I like to hear Vladimir Horowitz play, Victor Borge talk and Liberace do neither!"
The show must go on!

OMG! Poor Merrill.....but he did a great job, he has had to endure many things during his fantastic opera life......
Mr Merrill “endured” this willingly. Prior to being a member of the Met, His prior experience involved performing on the Borscht Belt circuit, in movies, etc. IMHO Robert Merrill and Victor Borge were perfect foils for one another. The humor was superb.
