An interesting fact about the Vickers Gun, when it was finally taken out of service in the 60's, a British armory fired off the entire stockpile of ammo they had for it non stop with the only wear being the barrel. They went through 5 million rounds, day and night, for a week and it was fine and only went through barrels.

From traditional European style fighting to hit and run calvary and guerrilla warfare (and trench warfare) advances. The war started with wooden sailing ships and progressed through steamships, ironclads and the first submarine. Rifles went from muzzle-loaders to cartridges and even repeating arms (and although not a true machine gun, the Gatling gun was automatic weapon firepower). Trains were used to move men and equipment making it the first mechanized war. Even artillery went from muzzle-loading smooth bores to rifled bores and some of the first breach loaders. Yes, American ingenuity made some huge advancements in the efficiency of killing one another. These advances helped set the stage for the very efficient killing of WW1. I love this channel and Megaprojects! One thing: could you maybe do a little less on the military side of things? I'll admit to having a fascination with that, but there are so many interesting things out there that weren't designed to destroy life.
So much of human innovation is due either directly from warfare, or as a byproduct of it. Two very notable examples: the jet engine and the rocket as we know it. Both were created by the Nazis as a way to win WWII. The Roman's got so good at building stuff as a result of their conquests, and their building prowess allowed for more conquest. Warfare is the natural way of human life, the relative peace that we live in only exists because we now have weapons that are capable of ending life on earth for everyone, so we decided its probably in everyone's best interest to not fight eachother.

Frankly, I'd be perfectly fine with having less technology if it meant that we didn't kill each other, and spent our resources on helping people instead of destroying them. Skirmish lines were outdated during the Civil War? No. They were used because muskets were terribly inaccurate and had a very slow rate of fire. Therefore they used concentrated volley fire to maximize the damage that could be done. Those Napoleonic tactics were the best available based on the technology of that time. At least until late in the war, when repeating rifles, the Minnie Ball and the Gatling Gun were deployed. At which time both sides started using trench warfare tactics in many battles. They offered a taste of what was to come during WWI.

Trivia: at the beginning of the First World War, Canada had more machine guns than Great Britain. The Canucks were also the innovators of “indirect fire,” a tactic picked up by all of the belligerents by war’s end and up to the present day. I've come up with a distinction between the channels. Megaprojects can be about the history of a specific important project and other various info about that projecy and side projects can be a less In depth collection of projects with a similar purpose or idea. If that makes sense to anyone.
Thanks to training and becoming an archaeologist I have been lucky enough to work out on the Western Front helping in the recovery and identification of individuals from that conflict, as well as helping to educate myself and others on the more day to day aspect. In my mind gas was by far the most dangerous! It might not kill the majority of its victims, but then that was part of its design. However the stuff doesn't degrade while the containers its held it (metal canisters) definitely does. Its the only thing that used to ever scare me while digging. Can you do a video on the battle for Hamel. July 4th 1918 in France with Australian and US infantry supported by British tanks. Planed by Australian General Sir John Monash and his staff to combine many of the proven tactics learned over the last 4 years and some new ones. Including dropping ammunition from aircraft for the infantry. The plan was for the operation was to be completed in 90 minutes but all objectives were not taken until 93 minutes. This was a multinational force. And it was a great example of a well-planned and run operation of combined arms forces. This would lead to the allied August offensive that broke the German lines and began the last 100 days of WW1. And how much did this battle affect the war effort.

Overestimation of Armor Plate; There's like dozens of examples of generals overestimating how protective steel plate was, only for their armor to be easily shot through killing all behind it. From tanks to armored shields, to helmets, the sort of testing we see today came about because ww1 showed what happened if you just assume

The last, and in my opinion absolute worst "weapon" of the war is barbed wire. I'm a little surprised that the airplane didn't make the list. Having a variety of roles such as bombing, fighter escorts and recon, the airplane was a very successful dealer of death during WW1.

Skirmish lines were outdated during the Civil War? No. They were used because muskets were terribly inaccurate and had a very slow rate of fire. Therefore they used concentrated volley fire to maximize the damage that could be done. Those Napoleonic tactics were the best available based on the technology of that time. At least until late in the war, when repeating rifles, the Minnie Ball and the Gatling Gun were deployed. At which time both sides started using trench warfare tactics in many battles. They offered a taste of what was to come during WWI.

Trivia: at the beginning of the First World War, Canada had more machine guns than Great Britain. The Canucks were also the innovators of “indirect fire,” a tactic picked up by all of the belligerents by war’s end and up to the present day. Indirect fire was a major factor in the amazingly short battle of Vimy Ridge.
So interesting but very sad. I find world war 1 sadly fastening and I always come away feeling a little ill from the savagery

I've come up with a distinction between the channels. Megaprojects can be about the history of a specific important project and other various info about that projecy and side projects can be a less In depth collection of projects with a similar purpose or idea. If that makes sense to anyone.
Thanks to training and becoming an archaeologist I have been lucky enough to work out on the Western Front helping in the recovery and identification of individuals from that conflict, as well as helping to educate myself and others on the more day to day aspect. In my mind gas was by far the most dangerous! It might not kill the majority of its victims, but then that was part of its design. However the stuff doesn't degrade while the containers its held it (metal canisters) definitely does. Its the only thing that used to ever scare me while digging. Thanks for another great video Simon! Now when are you going to do Grumman? F14, A6, LM.... go on you know you want too ;-p

@@kellym3610 From about 2005/6 through to 2015 or so. After that life got in the way although the work continues with the likes of Wessex Archaeology doing several sites and if I got the chance I would certainly do it again.
Can you do a video on the battle for Hamel. July 4th 1918 in France with Australian and US infantry supported by British tanks. Planed by Australian General Sir John Monash and his staff to combine many of the proven tactics learned over the last 4 years and some new ones. Including dropping ammunition from aircraft for the infantry. The plan was for the operation was to be completed in 90 minutes but all objectives were not taken until 93 minutes. This was a multinational force. And it was a great example of a well-planned and run operation of combined arms forces. This would lead to the allied August offensive that broke the German lines and began the last 100 days of WW1. And how much did this battle affect the war effort.
Not same channel but I would love a biographic about Maxim. He was (allegedly) the first to invent the light bulb but Edison had the patent overturned on a technicality and Maxim immigrated back to focus on arms manufacturing.. Justified mad scientist

Overestimation of Armor Plate; There's like dozens of examples of generals overestimating how protective steel plate was, only for their armor to be easily shot through killing all behind it. From tanks to armored shields, to helmets, the sort of testing we see today came about because ww1 showed what happened if you just assume

Suprised by the appearance of shotguns and clubs. That's two of the three horrors of The Great War I almost never see mentions of. The last, and in my opinion absolute worst "weapon" of the war is barbed wire. If you're not sure why it's the worst you've never been tangled in it at all let alone stuck in it and needing to get free urgently.

I'm a little surprised that the airplane didn't make the list. Having a variety of roles such as bombing, fighter escorts and recon, the airplane was a very successful dealer of death during WW1.
