    Barrels do several things. They provide a supporting structure for the bullet case so that it does not rupture, keep the bullet under acceleration for length of the barrel allowing the powder to burn, and provide rifling to spin the bullet to keep it from tumbling and keyholing the target.

    The damage will be even less if the bullet is just laying there loose. Fixing the bullet like that will allow all the energy to go forward and sideways, but not backwards.

    • @rm4googol930

      Exactly what I thought. In videos without it held down the bullet goes forward and the casing goes backwards at the same speed. But because the casing can’t move backwards all the energy is now given to the forward momentum. So he’s doubled the power of each of these cartridges

      Put glue on it lay it down and light it. Case will go farther than the bullet. Not far!!!!! I did this test when I was 12.100+ times. Bullet can't really hurt you without a barrel to trap the explosion behind the bullet.

    When we were kids (teens) we found a lot of 12 ga. rounds, we got the idea to tape them to the ends of our daisy BB guns to set the primers off, we didn’t dare shoot each other with shot, so we pried open the ends and poured out the shot and filled them with dirt, then wads of paper, then pieces of wood, then tooth paste….taped the shells to keep them from bursting all over…big fun!

  • @thegeek3295

    So every gun has a different barrel designed to be most effective for its bullet. And the the length of the barrel, or the choke for a 12 gauge etc also makes a difference. With a barrel, they all would pass right through. All results would be the same and rather boring as we all know what will happen. By removing the barrel the comparisons seem more equal and the results somewhat surprising. As we see the 7.62 is dangerous with or without a barrel. And a 22 is pretty harmless outside of a gun. He did a great job in this demonstration.
    I like the tests and would love to see more like this.

    .12 function as a flamethrower in case in don't destroy the target properly lol
    Btw you forgot to mention that this happens because in every case the cartridge has a surface to rest against. In other words, if you would just threw them lose into a bonfire, as an example, what would go off would be the case not the bullet itself. The bullet would jump off with minimal speed and distance since it's a lot heavier than the case. Cheers.

  • @flooid5506
    @flooid5506 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Here’s the thing fellas. If a bullet goes off outside of a firearm, more than likely there won’t be anything holding the casing in place. Since the casing is heavier than the projectile the casing will fly off leaving the projectile behind (roughly). In this set up the casing is still being fixed in a stationary position so essentially you’re shooting a gun with a 0” barrel

    • @janvesely6353
      @janvesely6353 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess it's the other way, the casing is usually lighter, which is why it indeed moves faster than bullet when the round is not contained. Since most of similar tests concern cases such as free ammo in fire, it's interesting to see also this variant.
      If it can be called 0 length barrel gun is to consider since it's missing chamber and casing can freely expand or split, which takes away most of the energy, compared to something like shooting a revolver without a barrel.

    • @flooid5506
      @flooid5506 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I actually wanted to bring up that point as well the chamber is what encases the bullet and keeps its form. That’s why you are able to reload ammo. Regardless this test is useless for a real world scenario. The best way to test this is to heat up the ammo with a torch

    That was an interesting video you forgot the one thing you need to take in consideration when a bullet goes off and it’s not in the chamber of a gun meaning just lying around with nothing holding it in place. The cartridge is usually the part that flies off the bullet is heavier than the brass or the casing doesn’t usually have that much velocity

      Great catch. Still a cool video, but not a true exploding cartridge experiment

    • @alexpontiff9763
      @alexpontiff9763 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@cliffords2315 as I stated in my comment, Greg means that in a true exploding cartridge, there wouldn’t be a jig holding the base of the cartridge firm against a solid base like in the video. In the video, the cartridge isn’t allowed to travel at all, only the bullet. That’s not what would happen in a real life scenario. It’s Newtonian physics. For every action, there’s an equal and opposite reaction. The cartridge in the video isn’t allowed to move backwards or anywhere else for the matter. Which means that when the powder explodes, the forces of that explosion have only one place to go, forward. And that’s more or less like having it chambered in a sawn off barrel. You can saw off some double barrels all the way down to the trigger allowing the shell to poke out the end. While the explosion wont result in intense pressure behind the pellets because there is in all intents and purposes no barrel, the pellets will still travel forward because the shell is chambered and sitting firmly and locked in the chamber not allowing the forces the explosion to travel anywhere else. So I’m layman terms basically just like the experiment in the video.

    The video is interesting, but in reality it is not faithful to demonstrate how far the ammunition penetrates, since much of the driving power is lost when the cartridge is not contained in the weapon.
    All the energy that causes the pod to be destroyed, if it were in the weapon, would add to the momentum of the projectile.

    Yes, any cartridge needs a barrel but supporting the head of the cartridge in your fixture mimics, if only a little, a barrel.
    Most occurrences of cartridges firing outside a gun barrel involve fire. Heat a cartridge up until the powder ignites.
    In an unsupported scenario, the cartridge case would move probably more than the bullet resulting in decreasing the speed of the bullet considerably.
    In other words, the projectile would do considerably less damage.

    I’m not concerned that you’re shooting it without a barrel. I’m concerned that you’re shooting inside.

    7.62 - самые крутые патроны для АК! Переделав АК под 5.45 совершили предательство по отношению к нашей обороне. И все доводы мол - кучность страдает ,пуля остаётся в теле нанося больший процент смертности)) -не прикрытая ложь. Как и мягкие авто ,якобы разрушаясь сохранит жизнь)) Кто побывал в переделках -меня поймёт.

    That 12ga was not operating at pressure, so little if any of the powder burned. The force was almost all from that big primer.

    Would have been more relevant had the metal target been restrained properly instead of yielding. But no surprises there.
