A sequence from Nimona - Nimona and Gloreth, 'Truth' - Storyboard Animatic

  • This storyboard was drawn during Blue Sky Studios production of the film. The studio closed down during production and eventually the project was produced and released by Netflix in 2023.
    This storyboard was produced with an early script. Here Nimona is shown living a life alone with the animals, possible for thousands of years. She eventually discovers a human village and befriends a young girl called Gloreth. When Nimona reveals herself as a shape shifter Gloreth and the villagers reject her as a freak. In a moment of anger she burns down the village. As the leader of her people Gloreth vows to kill the monster and eventually does so unaware that Nimona still loves her friend and had 'allowed' her to slay the beast. When Gloreth's time on this earth had passed Nimona stayed in the shadows until she meets a new knight in need of some help. Nimona believes she can offer Sir Ballister a change in his fortunes.

    Thanks for the comments everyone. This animatic shows the process that storyboarding a script goes through. It also hilights failings in a script. I could see many things wrong with character development as I was drawing it but in the early stages of a film we as board artists are tasked with getting the script visualised. I could always see that Gloreth's betrayal of Nimona was a problem. Nimona burning down the village was also a decision that Nimona's character couldn't really recover from. One thing I did like in this version, the book and in the final movie was Nimona's attitude to life despite the setbacks she had in life. She always remained a positive character with mischievous side to her. The film version of Gloreth's betrayal made more sense. Here Gloreth flat out rejected her as a freak. In the film it was her family and the rest of the villagers that twisted Gloreth's thoughts. That's the story development process.

      So wait, in the final product, did Gloreth genuinely see nimona as a monster because of the parents, or did she play along with her parents incorrect thoughts, just to fit in?

    I think the final version that made it to the film was better.
    1.) Nimona burning down an entire village on purpose because of the actions of a few terrible kids is not a good look.
    2.) Glorith originally accepting Nimona as she was until the adults around her made her believe otherwise is both a good way to show how prejudice is passed down to younger generations and also makes the destruction of their friendship more heartbreaking because Glorith WAS a good accepting friend.
    3.) It shows how stories can be twisted overtime for a society to spread messages that suit them.

      Nah. Animals can feel when something is wrong with other animal. They actually felt that Nimona wasn't one of them, which in nature, you need to be the same as others or stronger in order to survive (hence the reason why animal albinos are left behind, if not murdered). They have their own interaction cues and selective group choice.

      There's a scene in Star Trek Deep Space Nine where someone asks Odo, the shape-shifting security officer, about why he has trouble with humanoid forms when he's so good at impersonating animals, and he responds that while humans might think he makes a convincing bird, the birds would disagree.
      Apparently humans aren't the only species to experience the uncanny valley effect when things aren't quite right.

    This version does give clarity that Gloreth did "kill" Nimona, meanwhile in the movie it's not as clear. In the movie one interpretation can be that Gloreth never fought Nimona, and her story simply was exaggerated.

    • @Blazingstoke
      @Blazingstoke 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

      IIRC, it was kind of a "conspiracy theory" in the comic: Did Gloreth slay the monster as the legend told? Or did the monster _slay Gloreth and take her place?_

    • @vedji1857
      @vedji1857 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      From behind the fires, her parents and the town couldn’t see much. I believe nimona ran away out of sorrow once Gloreth cast her out, and the parents, seeing nimona gone after Gloreth did that, came to the conclusion she killed her, and Gloreth went along with the lie.
      Either to fit in more so she also wouldn’t be seen as a threat, or to protect nimona so they wouldn’t hunt her down.

  • @bdpickett

    I actually like the movie version better here's why:
    1. In the blue sky version, nimona shapeshifted body part by body part which was frankly very weird I'm sorry.
    2. Gloreth accepts nimona after she shapeshift, only turning on her once she sees how others including her parents acted around nimona. Hate is always taught.
    3. Nimona never burned the village, the villagers brought it on themselves
    4. This also shows how history was exaggerated about how a child beat a monster

    This looks awersome!!❤
    However, I think it's too long, the final version is shorter and more impactful, it also doesn't spoil the whole movie, because this piece seems to be put at the beginning(?) and not built up slowly, unlike the final product.
    I prefer her fully transforming into the animals like we got in the final version more than having that "monster" form and growing body parts (which obviously scares other animals), because in the final movie it shows how much she Genuinely tried to blend and be friends with them and still being rejected;
    also making it have more sense when she morphs into a fully human (she didn't morph fully for the other animals, why did she do it for humans?)

    • @PizzaHorse
      @PizzaHorse 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      But if you look at everyone around her, she's still different. She still stands out (enough that another human calls her a "freak"). Her eyes still reflect light (which may be one thing she can't change) and she frequently shows off her shark looking teeth. Her expressions are too wide, too big, and sometimes her eyes move unnaturally (for humans). I don't think she perfected being human, either. But she probably doesn't want to.

    • @giulf3der957
      @giulf3der957 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      @@PizzaHorse Yeah, she just wants to be herself! She doesn't want to hide who she is, every transformation it's her, she has no "real form" she's herself! Same when she shifts into other animals in the flashback, she's still pink
      She did perfect the way she uses hands tho, in the scene with Gloreth she can't throw a rock, but in the prison break scene she trows an axe randomly and hits someone in the background haha
      She had plenty of time to train her "human skills"

    It's really cool to get this peek behind the curtain. Really great board--just, really glad they DIDN'T go with Nimona being an actual, tangible threat in the script though?? Kind of throws off a lot of her characterisation and the themes of the story. It's cool to see how much things improved over time in terms of how that sequence was written, like cutting out the narration, making her friend being Gloreth a reveal.
    Also, seems like this was at the beginning of the film, which is so weird to think about!

      You are right about this being the beginning of the film - I even drew a version where we started the movie with a small pink amoeba in a primordial pool. Nimona could have always been there from the beginning of all life . But maybe that would have been too far .As I remember the book, Nimona did indeed burn down the village. Also It said to Balister that it was a little girl in the past. Of course maybe it supposed to be a little lie, but y'know maybe.
      But your idea would nice if we go with problem of intercourse "untypical peoples " with "normal people". Like maybe characters gonna find a society of Nimona's race and somehow they would try to asocialize them with the humanas, but we would get a troubles cause they both have a different cultures , styles of life and et cetera?

But I agree I prefer the version we have, but I think it would have been cool to have had a second meeting between Nimona and Gloreth, maybe when Gloreth is older and Nimona still lets her "kill her" to prop up her story.

But as an adult Gloreth was seen as a hero for protecting the village and the kingdom from Nimona but Nimona never turned into a monster 1000 years ago. She didn’t like to be seen as a monster. It makes no sense that they were friends and then Gloreth just pointed a sword at her. This deleted scene makes so much more sense because it shows Gloreth as an adult who protected the kingdom from Nimona

    Okay, who was the ONLY one with a heartbeat that did that and why didn't he direct the movie instead of poor enslaved Monkey who OBVIOUSLY wasn't one of those who sold us as the writers and directors?
    It's just, seriously, how do you make a movie with SUCH BAD execution and WORST details? Do you want to know what the BEST SCENE in the WHOLE movie is?
    Here it goes:
    Ballister and Nimona discover that the OBVIOUS VILLAIN is the obvious villain and they put up a whole show to get the Headmistress to confess to a fake Ambrosius (Nimona transformed into him), which she ends up stabbing. And then Ballister records everything and uploads it to the networks. What's the detail...? In the video, Ballister only records the face of the Headmistress confessing, not the fake Ambrosius... And Ambrosius and everyone in the kingdom have a chance to believe that Ballister and Nimona are still guilty... You understand the PROBLEM, right? And at no time do they explain that Ballister had difficulty recording. Neither if his prosthetic arm, nor his location. There is no explanation as to why he only recorded the Director's face confessing and nothing more knowing that the kingdom already knew that he worked with a Shapeshifter.
