We're talking briefly about one of my favorite rhythms... PLENA!!! This is just one of the many variations and styles this Folkloric rhythm has to offer... This pattern was one I learned throughout the years, but is obviously non-traditional...
It's a great pattern to learn to work on your independence and to expose you to a different flavor when it comes to the congas.

You explained it nicely. From the Bronx I am feeling so Puerto Rican more than ever. This rhythm was used by local folks as news of the day in the streets like a town crier back in the day.

Thanks again Eric! I checked Giovanni Hidalgo plena tutorial and he plays the slaps on the center of the drums instead of the "normal way". Does this kind of slap have a different sound/effect? I find really difficult to get it. Keep posting these nice videos. I am a fan!

Hello,you said in one of your videos for conga maintenance that you use “manteca de corojo”.
Well here in chile is really dificult to find it but instead of manteca de corojo i found a normal manteca de palma,shoulb be good 4 da congas??

I have two congas LP. One is small and the other is bigger. What note should these congas be on so that they have the same size. I see that both your congas look the same size.
