One thing that clearly stands out is how little wash and spray are coming off the foil arm. Almost none most of the time. Very impressive. Surely, that has to count for something in hydrodynamics.
It's striking how controlled the boats are looking this time around compared to the early stages in the last campaign. All the teams we have seen so far seem to have nailed the pitch and ride height. This form of sailing seems to be maturing fast.
I see much less sprays from the arms compared to Luna Rossa and Taihoro. It's surprising the other teams haven't focused on this detail. The extremal arms section going into the foils have smaller area here and when the the arm is duly lowered the sprays are remarkably reduced ...and so the drag that follows. 😮
Yes - but perhaps that involves trade-offs in terms of the lift they achieve? We won't really know till we see them head-to-head. Team NZ are so damn effective that it's hard to imagine they are missing a trick, and they are keeping their race foils under wraps.
This is going to be a great cup. Teams have had enough experience and time to play catch up to the kiwis. The question is has ETNZ levelled up as well? They were out the box and sailing same day and flying in 30 knots a few days later. Pushing it to the max and looking very polished while doing it. Bring it on!
@@robertbaird4822 I was talking wind speed, not boat speed. This was a week or so back. It was gusting close to 30 knots at times that day - seriously gnarly weather - I was kinda surprised to see them out there. @@robinhodgkinson That was a crazy training day for ETNZ. I viewed a much longer video on another channel. I don't think the AC committee will allow racing with winds close to 30kts but the Kiwis just battled through them.
This may be the most aero boat but it's really hard to tell with so many aerodynamic improvements on every boat this cycle. What will count more is the foil efficiency. So far no one has sailed or even shown their new foils yet.
@@jamesaron1967 it's a combination. That bulge and the pod design may save them ⅛ of a knot around the course which may provide the difference but you're right, it's early doors.
I Just had the oposite impression. In this swell it looked very fast for me. The Kiwis are flying very close to the surface and this will not work in Barcelona.
iirc because of the foil arm geometry you get more righting moment the more raised it is so maybe they're trimming heel by adjusting the foil arm cant instead of the traveller and sheet? idk for sure though just conjecture
Well, the more probing the reporters are the more reticent the crew will be to respond. No one wants to reveal too much for the sake of their team, and that will always cause the fans to be unsatisfied with these interviews. It's the nature of the beast and both sides are very conscious of the circumstances.
Why are nations associated with any of these boats/teams? What is the minimum requirement for a boat to incorporate the name of a country? A physical yacht club in that country - which can then comb the world for the best designers, crews, etc and then hire them?
There’s a nationality rule for the AC (you can google it). So: All crew members of Alinghi are Swiss, the Boat was built in Switzerland. Btw. 25% (orvrven mire) of the population of Switzerland are foreigners. Mixed teams from all of the world is quite common in Switzerland. So if you want to be very subtle, this rule is a little bit strange when it’s tested agains reality
Every time I see this boat again, it looks more beautiful.
The design is quite curvy. Too bad the color cannot show those curves to full advantage.
Exactly! 👍

I agree massively ! YESS
I would disagree.
Was thinking that , and the flow is very directed could a a real advantage in the chop creating lift frog the drag .
That's actually an area that needs improvement as the spray is way more than you'd want.

Yes there are no slow boats in this AC. I suspect it will come down to the starts and who has the best little secrets edging the others out.

I think they are using the chop for lift , it seems ver settled .

30 knots? Way past that buddy

Yup! Good stuff, kiwis are dialed in and flying, other teams have the gear just dialing in the idea! Its gonna be a cracker!
This really looks like an awesome design from an aero perspective. I'm a bit worried as an etnz man.

He seems like a nice Kiwi lad!😂
Looks like a lot of sail for the conditions.
Beautiful boat!, however looks slow compared to the Kiwis and Italians. Hope i am wrong!!!

I don’t they are loading the boat up at the moment
It looks to be a lot lighter winds in Barcelona
If they think they've 'hit the ground running' ETNZ hit the ground sprinting.
I am betting for Alinghi to win the Louis Vuitton Cup in 2024
The red bull engineers have a big job on their hands converting their racing car simulators to racing boats.
Amazing how one foil holds all that load.
2:38 Is the arm going up and down, or is that just the angle of the camera in the waves? Looks like it is going up and down to me.

@@rydenkaye9735This is apparently how etnz was doing it last cup so it probably is something everyone will be doing now. 👍
They're trying to ride the swell ,BUT THE SWELL WILL CATCH THEM OUT
9:00 got a bit loose and lost a lot of speed touching down. Took ages to get going again.
Light winds, it seems quite obvious…
We don't know what they were testing - it may have been deliberate. At this stage it's all speculation.
I saw my simulator coach on board with laptop
is this boat flying closer to the water than the last cup boats? looks like there's less distance between the bottom of the hull and the water
I was horrified with how high Alinghi was compared to Prada and ETNZ. Kiwis still have next generation foils to employ
elliot pilcher you dont get much oilier pilchard than that .. hydraulic engineerbigtime 👾
What hour do they usually go out for practice?
What win this cup is what you can’t see
The Swiss boat is a stunner. But look at the pitch control of any of these teams compared to ETNZ. ETNZ's pitch control is almost robotic. ehem
I dunno. Their pitched looked way off the other day in the rougher water.
Lighter winds and waves do that
Please get new journalists that asking some deeper cutting questions
