Reading Station before the Re-Build 16/11/2010

- With major re-development of Reading Station about to start, I decided to travel up from West Wales to film the station before the work begins. First of all I would like to thank the Station Manager and his staff for allowing me to film on the Station. I travelled up on the 07.30 Carmarthen to Paddington HST and after leaving in sunshine and frost, had to film in dense freezing fog during me visit. So this video is only a small part of the material captured, but hopefully will be a record of the station at Reading before it changes out of all recognition. I had to change trains at Swansea on the return home, and this station is also earmarked for major development in the near future.
i was very young when the works started on the station and i can only recall certain parts of the old station. thanks for capturing it as how i remembered
Thank you Patrick, due to the major changes that were to take place, I decided to capture it as it was. I live in West Wales, and haven't been there since.
@@robmasterman wow yeah its changed a lot, I pass through quite a lot as my job is in reading. They never got rid of the 1989 bit in the end as they ran out of money haha

Last month, I was travelling to Bournemouth on the train and I remembered I had to make a transfer at Reading train station and another transfer to Basingstoke and as I waited 2 hours for my train at Basingstoke I had a looked around the station, at the time I was completely unaware that the station had a complete makeover recently I always believed it was like the way it is now for way longer than the year the renovation began as there was no street view images of Reading train station dating back earlier than 2014. Although I am glad that there is footage on TH-cam showing what Reading train station use to look like in lots of detail although I have to admit, I am glad that the renovations did happen because it looks a lot nicer and futuristic because I have never seen a train station like Reading in my life.
Thanks for watching and your much appreciated comments. the station was completely renovated about ten years ago now, and this was an opportunity to get a record of how it was, before all the changes were made.
Wow memories. I was around 10 yrs old back then, but I remember those pre-changes so vividly. HST's with the entertainment systems, the lack of electrification, the station design, the 458's before being rebuilt, the concourse, the lesser amount of platforms, and with the HST's disappearing for good (Mainline services) after May 18th it'll bring probably the final curb of change. Nice video man.
I travelled up from West Wales to capture every day workings at Reading before the changes were implemented, and so glad I did now.
So sad, Reading in Foggy ;)

@flmabhwd Thanks Simon, what has happened is the seats have much higher backs then when originally built, which gives the impression of being closer together. These newly refurbished sets are very comfortable to ride in....Bob

Interesting to see the art work on the side of the train! Good to see the station again I was last there many years ago on a Bank Holiday en route to catch a plane but forgot to check the train times were the same as during a normal day. We only just managed to catch the plane!

Great video Bob once again. Strangely enough, I was in Reading on Wednesday, for work purposes, but it looks like you had a good day out. The staff there have always been very nice (I can think of Clan Line in May and the Duchess of Sutherland also in May). All very nice people. Do you know if any trains will be affected? Well done anyway for achieving these great shots.

@formidable38 This station has remained relatively unchanged over the years, so it seems a good idea to capture it before it changes out of all recognition. I live in West Wales, and unfortunately it was foggy in Reasding for most of the day, but I'm glad you enjoyed watching the results, and thank you for your comments....Seasons Greetings...Bob

Reading has certainly changed since I last went there (in the '70s for the rail-air coach to Heathrow) and now it is going to change again, so well done for recording this video of its present condition, and the variety of traffic. Regardless of the fog, it looked great! You mentioned in your notes that this was only a small part of the material captured, so may we look forward to some further views?..Mervyn

Funny, i can still very vaguely remember walking through the doors of the old listed building to get a ticket and walk onto platfom 4 all those years ago in my early teens. I wonder what year it was when that piece shut?!
Great video! I stumbled upon this trying to remember what the station looked like pre-redevelopment and I just do not remember it looking like this at all! I’ve lived in Reading my whole life but the only parts I recognise are the parts that are still there now. The main entrance didn’t end up getting redeveloped, sticks out like a sore thumb compared to the rest of the station!

@penninefilms The whole station is being upgraded so I wanted to record it before it changes, the TV's in the train seats costs £3.50 for unlimited day usage.....Bob

@MG06ZT Thanks Keith, there was three other freights, but I was on the wrong platform when two came in and I was bowled by a HST on the other.....Bob
I've been there a few times this week (12/6/13) and it's beginning to come together although there is still a good bit to do.
One intriguing thing is that there are overhead wires being put up in the new depot area, although this is well in advance of electrification of the main line route.
I think its great you recorded this. I spent hundreds of hours on Reading durring the 80's until i moved away from the area in 92. That 'new' piece they put on the side always did look horrible, glad its going. I can also remember that ugly footbridge going up to!

Your reply about viewing figures was intriguing, Bob. When I sign in, The first thing that normally comes up is a list of all new videos from my subscriptions, but this video was not on it! I found it only by chance, looking through the list of all my subscriptions- perhaps this might explain the unusually low viewing figures. I also seem to be having problems with e-mail alerts being re-directed.....Mervyn

I am looking forward to seing the finished result after the work at Reading is complete. As for the class 60's you might be very lucky in a few months to getting some shots of the 1st super 60's especially now 60007 is due for re-painting and could be out and about soon

When did they redevelop Reading station
It was around ten years ago, and I travelled up from West Wales to record it before it was completely renovated, and changed forever.

i miss the old platform canopies, progress is progress and all that, but the who station feels like an airport now, so sterile, they really should have kept them for platform one they weren't in the way of anything
I made the journey up from West Wales especially to capture what I could, before the significant changes to Reading were started, and I'm so glad I did it now. Like many locations on the GWR Main line, electrification has changed things out of all recognition. Places I've known for 50+ years, I no longer recognise...Thanks for your comments...Bob
4:20. This entrance will not stay but in reality it is still here in 2022. LOL Network Rail.
