    Distant Signal, that is Danny Harmon, a real fine gentleman. You and Danny are my favorite youtubers.

    Wow - that grain train was massive! A 4x3x3 is a ton of horsepower :) I find interesting aspects of any train, just for trivia. Take a stack train, they use articulated train sets and so I watch for the odd 5-car set or any even number (have not seen one yet). Coal trains are interesting as they are darn heavy cars and always have a fair amount of power. Tankers I get to see if they are placarded and if so, what's in them and the symmetry is pleasing to my eyes. Basically, whatever you video is cool - the trains are mostly gigantic out there!

      I love the heavier trains too. I've caught the grain train coming up the Mojave sode before. It is working hard! I'll keep an eye out even and 5 car sets. Thanks for checking it out and for the donations!

      The stack trains come in 3 or 5 car sets only. And 53' will always only be 3. 5 car sets will be shorter containers like 40' or 45'. They also have singles too

      @@jacobpfeifertrains1998 Thank you for the info. I did not know that it had to do with container size. Interesting that there are no even numbers :)

    Mark looking at the engines on the back of that grain they had all the extra stuff on the front of the rear locomotive which means its a manned helper set. Im surprised they rode the whole way down

      It was the first time I'd seen them with a crew down here since the 90s!

    That was interesting especially the UP Boom truck fire. Most likely some kind of electrical short caused the fire, considering the cab burnt so bad, there could be another cause not sure I'm not a fire investigator and I'm not there so ....

    • @MarkClayMcGowan

      It was arson. That is a horrible area, overrun with homeless and indigent. They started fires at the old depot a few times when we were still using it.

    what was the name of the instructional site that you listed?
    nice video just amazing lengths of trains today! especially
    going over the mountains! I am very surprised that they do
    not brake couplers, is that what the helpers do? help
    to minimize the load on the couplers as the train moves
    up and down the grades. thank you for sharing and doing
    such a great job creating these videos. take care and be safe.

      I think you're talking about "Distant Signal". It's a fellow in Florida who does videos about various aspects of railroading as well as just showing some trains. You are correct about helpers. Most of the trains could be pulled up the mountain with three or four locomotives on the point, but they would (and still sometimes do) break drawbars and knuckles. It also prevents "stringlining" curves and assisting in dynamics on down grades.

    Can you video BNSF's yard off of Kern junction

    • @MarkClayMcGowan
      @MarkClayMcGowan  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not accessible like the UP yard. At some point, I hope to speak with a BNSF terminal manager and see about being shown around, but I'm not optimistic. The SJVR also operates from there and maybe I can get access to their little corner. The Oak Street overpass bisects the yard, but I'm not leaving my vehicle unattended in that area while I shoot from the bridge. Thanks for the idea though, and for checking it out!

    Are those bright orange switchers part of BNSF??

    • @MarkClayMcGowan
      @MarkClayMcGowan  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No. Those are San Joaquin Valley RR units. They operate most of the branch lines in the valley. Last week I posted a long video of them (and UP) switching in the yard there. Go check it out!

    Question for you. Santa Fe railroad is coast to coast, you see CSX out west like on this video. Why did UP stop at the Mississippi?

    • @MarkClayMcGowan
      @MarkClayMcGowan  ปีที่แล้ว

      BNSF is not an east coast road and UP has major facilities east of the Mississippi, gained through mergers and acquisitions. CSX does not operate out here, but since all roads operate in the midwest, it is not unusual to see their power all over the country. Thanks for checking it out!

    What's your take on the possible RR strike?

    • @MarkClayMcGowan
      @MarkClayMcGowan  ปีที่แล้ว

      That the government will never allow it to happen, especially right now. I could be wrong, but that's what's always happened in the past.

    Hey Mark why arnt the BNSF trains blowing their horn for the crossings by the junction?

    • @MarkClayMcGowan
      @MarkClayMcGowan  ปีที่แล้ว

      BNSF from Kern Junction through downtown is a No Horn Zone. They put that in place about 15 years ago. It's all low speed track. UP still blasts them at all the crossings in Bakersfield.
