  • Built in a shed, it fired up first go. I was hoping it would sound real lumpy like a drag engine, but it runs too smooth, and it's too quiet even with unsilenced 9" pipes! The timing was a pain to sort out the Rover distributor runs backwards, I had to take the heads off to work out the firing order!!! See the shed it was built in on Vid 1.
    Added May 2012: OK, my nails are dirty, maybe because I'm an engineer & build stuff? Maybe your nails are clean because you can't build eff-all & just sit behind your computer? C'mon folk, get a life.

    The sound is dictated by the crank, cross plane = normal 'v'8 engines or flat plane = normal straight 4 cylinder engines, hence it's still two 4 cylinder engines making twice the noise. Love the work that's gone into it, just because he could, well done.

    We Americans don't say that. We say "there's no replacement for displacement." Not only does it rhyme, but there's also a perfectly good replacement for cubic inches: cubic centimeters. Really nice fabricating by the way.

    The reason it doesn't sound choppy like a racing V8 at idle is because you have 2 inline 4 bangers. That would be like expecting 2 honda civics to sound like a V8 with a "big mutha thumpr" cam in it. Good work on the build though, find something to put it in.

    Success. Keep working ! Is it a car , truck , tractor pull dragster , 4X4? looks like connected 2xfour cyl. but does not reduce the success factor NSU motors are a bit rare aren't they? RACE engine? Put it in an MGBV8 type body . Its got some mad acceleration, to hell with sound, and pink nails or whatever it is the tossers are on about ! Half of them can't change the petrol?Thing!

  • @watahyahknow
    @watahyahknow 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    still needs a little work , leaking fuel all over the place and stuff like that
    but its running and running pretty good actually
    i beieve toyota's are running in reverse as whell maibe use those gearboxes
    not sure if a normal gearbox will stay in gear when run in reverse but if it does you could flip the rearaxle and go the right way
    another option wuld be to use a motorcycle gearbox and run that of two big gears changing the rotation to the right way round
    i seen some dual engined dragsters use the starter gear interlaced with eachother to do that
    curious if youre going to put it in a bike frame or in a 4 wheeled vehicle
    (thinking old style slingshot dragster myself)

    Hi Gordini, I built a CHOPPER in 1979, based on a 1954 BSA A7, & grafted an NSU engine in after I blew the BSA. It was called "Nasty Nasty" & I had blokes on the new-ish CB750 Honda 4's asking me to slow down.

  • @jamesbradley1695
    @jamesbradley1695 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Good job, but it doesn't sound like a normal smooth straight eight, with a power-stroke every 90 degrees rotation. It sounds more like a normal straight 4!

    • @GGigabiteM
      @GGigabiteM 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      James Bradley Of course it sounds like an inline 4, because it's just two inline 4s bolted together end to end.

    • @jamesbradley1695
      @jamesbradley1695 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      GGigabiteM
      Rubbish, GG. If the ignition timing was set up right, it would sound like a straight eight.

    • @GGigabiteM
      @GGigabiteM 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      James Bradley
      No it wouldn't?
      A straight 8 has 90 degree throws. Starting from both ends, each successive inner set of pistons is paired up. An inline 4 has 180 degree throws.
      There's no possible configuration two individual inline 4 crankshafts could even remotely match a straight 8 crank.
      If you wanted this thing to sound even remotely like a straight 8, you'd have to do way more than alter the timing. You'd have to forge two new crankshafts and cams to go with them and then alter the timing on top of that.

    • @jamesbradley1695
      @jamesbradley1695 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      GGigabiteM Yes, you simpleton GG, the straight eight does has pairs of cranks at 90 degrees, so what’s stopping you connecting the two crankshafts at RIGHT ANGLES to each other. Then you would have pairs of cranks at 0 degrees, 90 degrees, 180 degrees 270 degrees. Then, as I said before, you would set up the timing right, -to get a cylinder firing after every 90 degree rotation! This could be achieved with two normal straight-four distributors offset at 90 degrees to each other. However, I can’t see that it can be done with the Rover V8 distributor, which is designed for the 90 degree v8 engine, which as we all know, has the uneven throbbing beat. So, try using a little imagination.

    • @GGigabiteM
      @GGigabiteM 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      James Bradley
      You do know what an inline 4 crank looks like right? It doesn't matter which way you rotate either crankshaft, you'll never get anything that looks like a straight 8 crankshaft.
      And even if you got the offsets right, the throws would be in the wrong places, resulting in a firing order that wouldn't work. The cranks in this engine don't look physically connected, but even if they were, the engine would run terribly from the bad firing order.

    A+ job my man... sadly most men don't even change their own oil these days. Too wussyfied. Car gets a hangnail? the telephone is picked up, the call is made, & it's taken to the shop. (Where real men work). I love building, construction, repairing, fixing. grease under the nails? Its how hair gets on your chest. That is why I dont let my wife work on the car. I dont want hair on her chest, cause thats gross. So to the wussies out there.. get dirty.. as Eric would say. Gear heads would know who I am talking about.

    Lol! I bet these kids never done to their cars anything apart from installing audio and gay-looking spoilers. Hands do get dirty and it's a fact some of the oil-staining is impossible to remove except by normal skin wear. That's exactly how my nails look like after disassembling the engine bay of my car and performing some work on the engine. Obviously your hands wont get dirty, if you take your car for oil change and it's just plain stupidity to pay for something that anyone can do.

    You got those dirty mechanic pimp slapper hands bro :D Thats awesome it means you work on stuff like a real man and aren't afraid to get your hands dirty. We are a dying breed my friend. Now a days people don't build shit they just go buy it when it breaks. great video and very cool project. Cheers

    Many thanks for your kind comments Joe, I virtually live in my workshop, if I couldn't build stuff there would be no point in living.

    Cool, not only is it a great concept but well engineered too....I mean it looks like it meant to be...not a lash up of crummy brakets and gaffer tape....well done that man.

    Oh, neato! That's news to me. I've heard other things like turn signal and indicator, but never that. Thanks for letting me know!
