There's no documentation on this stuff. If you look up "How to restore an old pocketknife" on Google, there's bugger-all information. About the only 'tip' I found was: "Lubricate knife with mineral oil". Great. What happens when the oil dries up? The grime inside the knife is still there. The oil does fuck all unless you REMOVE the grime first. And unfortunately, the method I described is the only way to do that, short of ripping the entire knife to pieces, cleaning it, and putting it back together again, something which most collectors probably can't do anyway.
