Yeah I would suggest changing those locks out for sure. I have a motor home that is not that old and I could rake both locks open in less than 5 seconds each when someone borrowed our car for a 2k mile trip and the keys are in the glovebox and I had to get into it.
Most high end RVs come with your ghetto lock as you say, they have a much better key system.. those locks most I've seen use the same key, even a new one I installed a month ago
we had several RV's in our condo complex broken into - the thief jimmied open the double locks on all of them - no key was used as you could see the locks were all scratched up and slightly bent. We all had both the deadbolt and the handle locks locked. My question is whether there is something we can buy to prevent "break in tools" from being inserted into those locks. If not, do you have any suggestions for a lock that is "jimmy proof" from lock picking tools or such?
@@TrailerDayz I did! He came back and unlocked it. Something is wrong with the lock. When the key was in it locked, the red lock on the inside was able to be flipped to the unlock position. If the key is out, the door cannot be opened from the inside. I even took apart the plate before he got home in hopes of triggering the mechanism by hand, to no avail.
@@vulcanknights They were locking the handle lock, which only locks from the outside. The "deadbolt" actuated the red lever on the inside, but the handle lock does nothing on the inside. In the future, tell them to only lock the deadbolt lock.
Additionally, most RV makers share manufacturer / suppliers of items like door lock cylinders, so there's a good chance that your neighbor RV'er may have the same key number as yours.
I called Fastec Industrial about the core change key. They stated that I cannot purchase one and MUST go to an RV dealer to re-core my lock. I sent my cores back and had to purchase the whole lock with cores installed for $26.00. Seems like the easiest way to re-core a lock is just replace it.
I agree that traditional "house" locks look ghetto. Just bought an 73' Amerigo camper. The front door need to be completely rebuilt and the locks on it are bulky and ugly.
As a locksmith. First off, car keys do not have master keys. Period. Second off, both of those cylinders are incredibly easy to pick over, or force over with a flat head. Key codes are right on the front as well, very easy to convert and cut a key.
The only reason the dealer has one key to open all types of rvs is because the key code is the same for handle locks out of factory. You can only master key a lock with actual pins, not a wafer lock.

Not sure what you are referring to there. House style deadbolts are only moderately more secure than an RV lockset. I have a master key that will open 95% of RV locksets, which is where the warning comes into play.

In the 80s Ford only had 4 different styles of keys. I used to have a full set.

Perfect. I'm actually locked INSIDE. My SO locked the door with the key from the outside to keep it the door latched due to the above mentioned issue.

The deadbolt (red lever key hole) is the key hole was the only one locked, if that makes sense.

At least up until about 10 years ago there was a master set for all makes. The foed ring did have a good 500 keys on it. Lol

I ordered new CW series cores with keys from Fastec Industrial (FIC). Do they provide the change key you mention? Otherwise I cant change the cores.
They sell them, but your locks won't come with them.
